Because pointless drama, they can't come up with reasonable conflicts between characters so they resolve to poor climaxes that lead to players hating this specific character for the rest of the series until they regret it, like with S2-slap-in-the-face Conrad.
It's kinda like Ben confessing "how it was all of his fault" and then the group just stands there deciding what to do with him, while the zombies are breaking down the door.
I have to wonder if the writers just didn't have any examples to pull from to form this character well. A good friend of mine I've known for years lost his parents to a car accident when he was young, about Gabe's age as it begins. He also happens to be Cuban-American, and was taken in by his grandfather. He was more mature by 13 than some 21 year old men I know now that had both parents because of that loss. He looked at life differently, had more responsibilities. At 15/17, he wasn't just some kid that respected older people, but someone very worthy of respect. Now he's one of the most awesome adults I've had the privilege of knowing.
Gabe is the prime example of what it looks like when "soft-parenting" fails. Some children seem to need a slap to the face in order to set them back on the right path.

Because the plot demanded him to be. No, really. I coddled the boy through the whole game. I was extra nice to him and to his father on this episode. His hissy-fit was so out of nowhere.

It seems everything involved with Gabe is just bad. He tends to turn everything to shit and you have to walk on glass around this guy, especially if your trying to be nice to him. This character is so laughably unlikeable.
I think the idea was that she didn't want a fight and went to Joan when no one would listen to her. The problem is that they don't hammer this in enough; even I was caught in the right field when Joan singled her out and I usually pay attention to that type of shit.
I was ready to smack the shit out of him when he mentioned me killing Conrad, and then the funny part is that if you wouldn't have killed Conrad he would have called you a coward. Gabe just ughhhh
To Javier. He and Clementine don't even mention each other from what I recall. Which is a shame, since their vitriolic interactions was one of the things I was looking forward to.
Am I missing something? But I don't remember at all having any of those things as an option when talking to Gabe. I guess the reason why I never saw any of those options was because I didn't treat Gabe like shit. I mean yes him showing off was annoying, but it's part of his character. He felt useless when Marianna was killed and now that he has his dad around, he feels like he can do anything. I mean hell he found Javi in the jail place all by himself and saved him. It's part of his character to grow up and mature, if Telltale games started to write every supporting cast as likable than the game would be very boring. It's not TWD if all the characters seem to get along just fine and dandy, there's needs to be some chaos in the mix to make it more enjoyable as a series.

, like with S2-slap-in-the-face Conrad.
Don't you mean part 2?
It's kinda like Ben confessing "how it was all of his fault" an… mored then the group just stands there deciding what to do with him, while the zombies are breaking down the door.
Except no one died.
Don't you mean part 2?
I already commented on this, Conrad is a character that slaps S2 determinant characters in the face
Except no one died.
Well Brie (and Ben).
Wow really? My Conrad died last episode after I didn't give him the gun. (I didn't think he'd die! I thought he'd be smooth saiing from there on... Telltale wouldn't make multiple deaths for him would they? -- Actually, yes they did. Oops. Sorry Conrad.)
I was kind of getting a liking to Gabe by the end of the episode. It really annoyed me that he was around a whole bunch in the beginning, and he starts thinking he's the leader of the Uncle/Nephew team, but I managed to talk some sense into him by the end ...I think.
But he does this if you shoot Conrad? Jeez. Now he's dropped back to my most hated character spot and is now a total walking liability whom I do not trust. Wow. I might give him one more chance in the next episode, but he needs to do something good and smart for that. So... protect Javi or David. Maybe even stay behind for once, Gabe?
Like I said, not every character has to be written to be likable. I rather prefer a character being unlikable and then eventually turning into a likable character because it would add dimension to the character development. With that said, in my playthrough in episode 4 I have yet to see Gabe doing anything stupid other than the part where he ran straight at the door and got Javier stabbed (which eventually lead to the funny scene where Javier gets to talk to Clementine about the menstruation cycle).
Except it's not enjoyable, it's insufferable every time Gabe opens his mouth and does something stupid.
Gabe is just an annoying one note whiny character at this point.
Really enjoyed Gabe in this episode, he's like a little David, but at least with Gabe its not too late to teach him right and wrong. He fucked up a bit, but that's the process of learning...Even if making mistakes can be life and death, its generally great the lessons I gave in this episode stuck with him, and how he learned to keep his cool. Character development woo!
Yeah I had Conrad a live. In my playthrough I always try to have as much people alive as possible (except for the really unlikable characters like Badger and Joan).
He's just a kid. Not everyone can be that badass, brave and "smart" at first. Not every teenager can be like Clementine. I'm not saying he weren't a little douchbag during episode 4, because it's totally true, but still... Just a kid. And most of the kids have that kind of attitude.

I'm just hoping he can survive til the end and not end up like the rest of the determinant characters where they end up dead regardless how many times we try to save their ass. It'll be a welcome change in the telltale games formula.

… more
Yeah same here. That's actually one of the reasons why I kept Conrad alive. Glad he made it to episode 5.
Gabe is probably going to have to go through a complete face lift if he's ever going to get to the likeable stage. Hell, he's not even sympathetic or interesting to boot.

Because hes a teenager, hes an idiot, I was one and everyone whose grown up realizes they were one. Some teenagers are idiots in different ways than others. Gabe is highly opinionated and he obviously shouldnt be, but hes a kid and hes stupid, like kids are. Clementine is written to above the bar, Gabe is written to be slightly below.
Fair enough, I just saw a video of what happens when you shoot Conrad and yeah I can fully understand why some people hate him for that. I let Conrad alive so I never had to deal with Gabe acting like a douchebag.

Actually, that's not the case, I've played through the episode twice myself. The dialogue options make no difference here. The only way to avoid that situation is to spare Conrad. There's no other way.
"I have to step up.I need to be a man"
You being fucking crazy dead motherfucker, son of bitch and unthankful little bitch.
That's what I'm saying/screaming when Gabe tell Tripp I fucking kill Conrad...

Yes. A younger, arrogant and braver Ben.
What about those who love him?

At least Ben was better, he felt real... unlike "muh-daddy", throwing you under the bus prick.
Because Javier raised him for 4 years.
Javier liked to spoil the kids.
David was more strict.
Dangit, you beat me here.
Ironically enough, I think Gabe himself would agree with that.
More like Nick without the Guilt Complex and Depression.
This comment got a chuckle out of me. Though I'd say Conrad, Ava, and Clint are exceptions.

Fuck'em, of course. That was they're approach with Sarah.
Don't you mean part 2?

Oh, okay.
I was referring to Gabe's situation.
