So hurt right now.
Jane calls Sarah a liability, but has sex during a herd on its way that she knew about? Wtf, game? Halfway through season 2. I love their games but this felt half assed. I don't care who Jane or Kenny lost, it's heart breaking. But they need to help people more. Not always expect the worse and do nothing about it. Not only does Sarah have an anxiety disorder, she is freaking grieving after she lost someone who was a leverage. Luke, Kenny.. no one even talked to her. She's younger and lost her damn father. She didn't get much dialogue. And Luke just getting to the roof first, that was just wrong. And a lot of people don't notice, but how could Sarah have gotten underneath all that rubble when the deck collapsed first? I have a gf who has something similar. For God's sake, we aren't being attacked by zombies. She has parents but she is afraid of staying places alone or most things. I would do anything to protect her if something like this were to happen. Disorder or not. And saying she is "not normal" made me lose a bit of respect for this. I loved Luke but this just wasn't okay. And everyone basically interrupting Clem from comforting Sarah just really annoyed me. Saved her for nothing. She should've at least taken Sarah with her to find a safe place so they could talk. They're a lot of things you shouldn't say to someone with an anxiety disorder and the game did that a lot. I don't think Sarah had like PTSD but we really don't know. No background. Nothing, so we can't judge. She was someone whose Dad barely allowed to grow up, that isn't her fault. And wishing death on someone for any reason, even though Reggie died, that was not her fault. She was someone who was never violent and yet one of the most hated characters. She is fictional but it scares me how people think.

I don't think I ever selected an option faster than I chose to abandon Sarah. Not even shooting Conrad, I had to mull that over for a few seconds. I dont think the fuse even moved before I ditched her. But I did save her from the worst executed death in series history, so there's that.
Oh god, here we go.
I find it really disturbing how many people thought there was something wrong with her, even more so to those who left her to die for it. I don't understand where it comes from. Sarah is the most average kid that has appeared in The Walking Dead game series. The weirdest thing about her was how insistent she was to be Clementine's friend, but did it not cross anyone's mind that she probably hasn't had a single friend since the apocalypse began? Is it really that strange that she was desperate for some kind of friendship?
And like OP said, Sarah lost her dad and she was only fifteen years old. How does that not justify a mental breakdown? Are kids not allowed to feel grief or shock just because it's the zombie apocalypse?
People who hated Sarah or thought there was something wrong with her, can you please explain to me why?
Edit: To those who are going to call me a hypocrite for not liking Gabe, I've never said I wanted him dead because of his actions, nor have I ever said there's something wrong with him. I don't like how he acted in episode 4 because as far as I can tell his exposing of Conrad's murder was intentional, where as Sarah never did anything to intentionally sabotage the group.
THIS!!
Yeah, still the low moment for this series for me, being a needlessly meanspirited, lazy, self-defeating, and downright sloppy writing decision and all. Sarah was easily my favorite character in that Season and is still one of my top favorites in general thanks to how oddly lovable and sympathetic, yet complicated and unique she was compared to most of the other characters and they really should've given her a better deal than she got, particularly where Season 2.5 is concerned. But apparently, the writers felt they needed a strawwoman to make Jane look good, whether it actually lined up properly or not, and a number of the developers didn't like her, so she had it hard from the beginning to the [sloppily timed] end. And just wait till you the finale episode if you feel that way now....
Btw, Telltale confirmed that she did indeed have PTSD in an interview. That's why things like hearing Carver's voice, seeing people get hurt, and not wanting to be touched after experiencing what happened to Carlos firsthand caused her to react so badly.
LOOOOOVEEEE YOUUUU. Thank you. This is amazing of you. I mean Kenny even had Lee to help him get through all this grieving. Yet he just sat around feeling sorry for himself while Sarah lost someone and no one batted an eye? I hate the word retard or hate. I dislike a character for reasons. But I loved Sarah because she was like so many teens today. A lot of people will never understand anxiety and that sometimes you can't help them. But that doesn't mean you let them waste away and abandon them. She was at the hardest part in her life. I don't know if she had friends either before Clementine. And yeah, she wanted someone to call her friend right away. But she is right needing people she can connect to that is around her age. And yeah, she's 15 but not like 18 or 21.
I don't see why age, which is a number needs to tell you who you should allow in your life unless you are really in danger. I need to watch The New Frontier or play it to see what Gabe is like. I think one of Clementine's choices was to say they were not the same age. Sarah, I think... said she would be turning fifteen in a certain month. Can't remember. Or she did say she is fifteen. But Clem turned nine, right. Before we even saw a baby bump on Christa. So another 6-7 months, she was still 9. But then 16 months pass. So she would almost be 12. So like three years or three and a half years apart from Sarah. That's not a huge deal. Quit saying we are creepy or pedophiles. I've seen it on tumblr too. I just felt that there was so much more than could've been done with Sarah but fuck that. We will give her a horrible death. I mean, no one even talked about her death after. And Jane, I wanted to hit her. She shouldn't have to be told to help or feel annoyed. She is one of the reasons why Sarah didn't even make it. If she and Luke paid attention to the herd and not desires when they never even shown feelings for each other, they wouldn't have had to worry about the deck or any of it. So the game wasn't thought out through. They just wanted her out. That's not how any story, movie, game, etc works. Sadly it does but that doesn't make it right. I really wanted more moments between Sarah and Clementine.
Notice how in most of these games, The Last of Us, The Walking Dead, it shows us that the alive kill each other more than the dead kill them. And The Last of Us scared me to think about the government being in charge and more important than the citizens during the apocalypse. Kenny, Jane, Luke.. these people are adults. And Clementine and Sarah were the most mature of them when it came to how adults should treat each other. And Kenny did not deserve to die. That is something I'm torn about. He did get angry easily and I understand what Jane meant about him being a ticking bomb waiting to go off, but she really was the one lighting the fuse. Way to be mature than a fucking 11 and 15 year old. Good job, good job.
Thank you. I heard that too. It's amazing how many people were so rude about it. They have no idea how far this game would've gone if they gave Sarah a chance to redeem herself. Jane was just looking out for herself just because of something that happened to her sister. Bad things happen to everyone, you asshat. Sorry for the language. But no matter what Sarah did or how she handled situations, the characters and the developers have no right to label her permanently as a "liability" or "not normal". Even people gave Arvo who has hurt people, shot Clementine who returned his bag of medicine, and ambushed them, praise and forgiveness. Or just empathy. But more than half of the gamers thought it was funny or thought Sarah was stupid and a loser. That makes a lot of sense...
Season 2 had a lot of good characters fall victim to writers who had no clue what to do with them. It was better in theory. Sarah, Nick, and even Luke didn't have to die imo. I like Jane to a degree tho I ultimately picked Kenny but it felt like the game was anti-Kenny and pro-Jane the whole time. Sarah should have survived to the end. It's really unnatural to have only the protagonist survive.
I was very disappointment with how they just killed off Sara as well.
When her Father died, I was thinking "Oh no... how is Sara going to react to this?" but then I thought "Maybe this could be a good thing. Maybe now she can finally grow.".
I must admit, I did abandon her but only because I didn't want to force anything onto her, hoping that she might change her mind and find some courage to leave at the last minute...
I kinda almost saw Clementine and Sara a bit like Lee and Clementine.
Clementine was scared at first, but Lee taught her how to survive and to become stronger.
Perhaps it would've been better if Sara's death was determinant.
If you were her friend and supported her, she had the strength to survive.
Sarah was a great character who had a lot of potential. She could have easily replaced Gabe in ANF because she is easily better written than Gabe. I hope Gabe dies.
Also, Jane proved she was so selfish by leaving Clem and AJ on their own.
I don't think I'll ever truly get over how TellTale handled Sarah. The whole thing was just needlessly cruel and disgusting. And yeah, the way so many people shit all over her bothers me too. I saw a lot of realism in her character (kinda ironic considering TT's shoddy writing) and for people to bash her is... kind of disturbing, really.
Also I hated Jane lol she just made my blood boil even more.
Me too.
Not to mention immensely hypocritical with how people such as Sarah and Nick are expected to die to help relieve the burden of the strong and able, according to the logic behind Amid the Ruins...and yet in the very same episode, the game wants Clementine to grow a bond with a newborn baby she has no connection to whatsoever beyond being friends of the baby's mother, the same person who had once advocated Clementine's death back in their first meeting over a suspected walker bite.
Come to think of it, it's a little weird to me that the game expects an eleven year old to develop paternal instincts for a newborn baby she's not related to.
Even as of now I still perceive Sarah's death and overall treatment in Amid the Ruins as one of, if not the lowest point of the series as a whole.
The intended message behind her death was poorly handled and unnecessary, if not outright insulting considering that Telltale had confirmed that Sarah has PTSD. What was the purpose behind it? Besides the message that 'people like Sarah and Nick cannot hope to survive in an apocalypse and should die to unburden the strong and able', which is also ludicrous considering that, in the same episode, the game encourages an eleven year old to bond and care for a newborn baby for the next two years, and possibly on her own too. It's not only hypocritical, it's insane to boot.
The mean-spirited reception towards Sarah's character and her death does sometimes make me worry about their mindset towards those of disabilities, but at the end of the day, it shouldn't concern anyone. There are many, many people who do appreciate and accept characters or people like Sarah.
Even more contradictory is the fact that the episode featured the symbolism with the "Fallen, but never forsaken" statue, which depicted a soldier carrying another wounded soldier to safety. Which doesn't exactly gel with the Sarah situation, to say the least.
I mean, I'll give Amid The Ruins some credit for attempting to tackle themes and symbolism... but I don't think the episode entirely had the concept nailed down.
It absolutely doesn't at all. Because if she was rescued from the trailer, later on Sarah literally falls to her death and is then forsaken.
The statue was probably placed there in the story to serve as either a red herring, or to represent how the game disagrees with the moral behind the statue's message, and expresses it through their characters' actions...which also makes no sense as the group helps protect Rebecca as she gives birth to AJ.
Yeah...I feel that Amid the Ruins definitely didn't give much thought to the themes and symbolism presented in that episode.
In all fairness, while I get why Nick is usually lumped together with Sarah on this topic, I don't think his death is as much a problem as Sarah's. With Sarah's death, and the circumstances surrounding it, I can see why it's considered disparaging. Nick's death, on the other hand, just feels like a case of "determinant character we don't know what to do with" syndrome. It doesn't feel like his death was trying to make a statement or prove anything, outside of "we really don't know what to do with this guy"
To be fair, I think that may have just been intentionally ironic, considering they had Jane look at it. Which is admittedly a little funny if you ignore the murder and elitism.
Still, it should've meant something for the characters who actually are sympathetic.
Pretty much. Plus, when you really think about it, it's a tragically heroic death too: Nick, ignoring the fact that he was shot by Tavia, charges out of the trailer, given his neck chomped and eventually bleeding out after getting stuck to the hole in the fence, in hopes of finding help for Luke and Sarah--and, in a way, he succeed. Hell, even Jane gets a chance to show vaguely admirable behavior being encouraging Clementine to put him down so that she'll hopefully ready to do the same to Luke, Sarah, or anyone else if it comes to that, which is in stark contrast to how she actually treats Sarah.
Sarah's death, on the otherhand, was just as random and contrived as it was spiteful and, ultimately, unnecessary.
Sarah was a sweet relatable character, who after ep 3, loses her father and loses herself sadly, But it was Carlos's fault for sheltering her, he should told her about what was going on, taken her out there, and exposed her to one safely though hard to do, it is necessary, so she would know what was going on, I find it funny, looking back, that until carver shows up, they acted like the Camp at Howes never happened, or really related how bad it was, if Sarah is as fragile as is shown she wouldn't have really survived past the initial outbreak, it was a cheap tactic of telltale based on the fans hating her to kill her off... it felt forced, and unnecessary...
