Well, apparently, Mariana is literally a modelswap of Clementine from what I remember someone saying, just a little taller, plumper, and wit… moreh different apparel and hair. Plus, as I guess early on and pointed out in a previous comment, Clementine was more or less destined to replace her, a thought that Thicker than Water definitely drove home.

To be very fair to Gil, I get the feeling that was never the plan to begin with and that Randy was just happy to get him some food but got overprotective and scorned when Jane established that they had a limited supply of food and put restriction on it. This lead to problems down the road that eventually ended with the family grabbing half the food by force and taking off with it.
