The point of tailored story telling is that there isn't a "canon" path. The "alone" ending is chosen as the default ending because it doesn't burden players who haven't played Seasons 1/2 with required pre-existing knowledge of Kenny and Jane's situations.

Honestly telltale should have just said this is for newcomers and doesn't follow the previous seasons and 0% of choices from previous seasons will matter.
It is. That is the default ending for a non-linked/ non-S2 generated save file.
Also, it is the absolute convergence point out of all possibilities. Kenny end: Kenny dies, Clem is Alone ; Jane end: Jane dies, Clem is Alone ; Wellington end: Edith dies, Wellington gets invaded, Clem is Alone. It all comes down to one point.
Yeah imagine that logic applied to every series. "Ooh yeah we are on book, season or movie number 5 and doing great so far but hey let's just reboot and wipe out the entire cast we've followed and admired for years in the whole deal without warning so that "lazy newbies" can dive and dig right in. This is a fair and smart move for everyone right? Great! cappuccino anyone?"
Every new franchise or series I check out. I expect to have to binge watch, play or read everything up to current date.

Shouldn't those "burdened players" play Season 1-2 before playing a new season?

You would think, but Telltale's like "Nah" and decided to make it accessible to newcomers.

It's pretty much the only ending that matters... if you got the alone ending, you're alone. Boom.
