Random question regarding something Brenda said?

When Lee discovered Mark upstairs in the house, Brenda is heard shouting "Lee did you fall in? Dinner's on the table and everyone's havin at"

Forgive me for asking because for all i know this is an American term but can someone explain why she says "did you fall in?". I have heard it said before and just wondered? I mean i kinda know it means what is taking you so long but why do they say, fall in? To the toilet? Is it like a jokey thing to say to someone being in the toilet so long?

Cheers lol

  • Yeah, I think it just means "are you taking so long because you fell in the toilet?"

  • Thanks for the reply

  • There's a similar saying in German "Bist Du in's Klo gefallen?" literally means "Did you fall into the toilet?", so I guess that's what's meant by "Did you fall in?"

  • Cheers. Yeah it just seems like such a strange phrase to say ask someone who has been in the toilet for so long

  • It's a common term where I live in the UK as well.

  • I always ask in real concern. Can you imagine if you fell in a toilet and no one tried to help you out?

  • Well it's more charming than the other common one of "are your guts that bad you've turned inside out?"

Let me know if you ever come to a town called Oswestry and we'll discuss the Walking Dead to...well death.

  • Well small world indeed.

If you ever come into a pub called the Highwayman, I'll be the one wearing Clementine's hat.
