So, about Jesus?

  • The reason why I actually digged this interaction with Jesus was because it didn't necessarily felt like I was /suppose/ like Jesus back unlike Kate where It felt like the game would punish me for not dating her. It felt more natural and actually a clever use of using a LGBT character without it being shoved down the audiences' throat just to reach the diversity quota cough Mass Effect Andromeda cough As biboy myself, its nice to see a bisexual(if you so choose) like Javi to be used properly in the gaming medium rather than just him being bi and that is the only interesting thing about him.

Also, if I felt a more better/honest chemistry with just a 30 sec flirtation with a gay ninja than the hours of interacting with Kate, something isn't right.

  • This interaction made me so happy! Thank you, Telltale!

  • About Andromeda, they changed the trans woman dialogue in Andromeda two weeks after release to make it so that you can only ask her why she went to Andromeda once you already completed her quest, when she knows she can count on you and trusts you (and that's when she reveals she is trans, when you ask that). And she is a very, very minor character that a lot of people completely miss. There were no other LGBT characters that were, as you said, "shoved down the audiences' throats"; in fact, male/male relationships got waaaaay less screen time than any other relationship (patch coming within a month to allegedly improve those), and two of the most complete romances of the game are exclusively heterosexual. Other than that, you get a couple of minor mentions of same sex couples existing.

Just saying, because saying that they were shoved down the audiences throat makes it look like LGBT people got too much representation in Andromeda, which is far from being the case.

  • It's okay, the trans woman thing ended up attracting a lot of attention and being blown out of proportion because they actually wrote an apology for it. They should have just patched and left it alone. A lot of things about that game were blown out of proportion because of the weird decisions the PR guys made tbh.

Okay we needed a [Ask to ride off into the sunset with Jesus] option.

I tweeted to telltale a few weeks ago how Javi was my self insert except I was bi and he was (obviously) into Kate.

    This is so spooky.

    I love it.

If he comes back, I hope he gets the option to romance some dude(s) ;)

  • That moment made me uncomfortable. I have nothing against gay people, but the way that they were making eyes at each other made me think that they were going to cut to a shot of them butt-bangin', which isn't where I wanted Javy to go.
It's particularly funny because I rejected all of Kate's advances, then thought, "oooooh, no. Is this where they think I want him to end up?"

  • I ended in a relationship with Kate, told her we'd bang okay and make babies, and then proceeded to flirt madly with Jesus. I have no regrets whatsoever.

  • Wait I don't remember it being shoved down your throaty in andromeda, when does that happen?

At least, not any more than heterosexuality being showed down your throat

  • Seriously, when I saw the option, I was not expecting Jesus to flirt with Javi and then... I got super excited when I heard Jesus' low tone ;) So I went with the 'so they say' option and my oh my, did those two flirt!!! Those looks were as clear as day!

Like my heart, it just... Man... I was not expecting it but like Javi is a bi baby and I love him. :)

THIS, all of this. The way the interaction just happened was what I liked the most tbh. It was natural, didn't feel forced at all, it didn't feel like the game had a gun to my head was was whispering flirt baaack. I'm also worried about how much I enjoyed a 30 sec flirt scene and not all the stuff with Kate lol

Some people got that impression because there is one minor character who reveals she is trans if you ask her why she came to Andromeda, and BioWare felt the need to change when she can give you this information after people complained it was too unnatural how she would just tell the main character her dead name right after they meet (basically, you ask why she came to Andromeda and she says "I used to be [male name] but that was never who I was"). Now, that dialogue choice is only available after you finish the first quest she gives you and support her by helping her with something personal. That was changed two weeks after release.

Other than that, LGBT people just exist in Andromeda. Really not being shoved down anyone's throat. I doubt people would even claim it if BioWare had just patched the trans woman dialogue instead of writing an apology letter in addition to it. It ended up causing an unnecessary fuss.

  • THANK YOU!!! Javier is seriously one of my favorite characters, hearing that he's bisexual makes me so happy!! I really can't express how happy this makes me ❤️️

There's an option to flirt back, isn't there? :P

  • The first thing I wanna talk about when I just finished the game is this thread. Even if it's only a hint, but thank you for the flirting with Jesus. My Javi asked him to stay, there's a room, yet he said he's had other duties elsewhere.

I know Jesus is gay, but now I could make my Javi at least bi. Thank you Telltale. <3

  • I didn't pick that, what did Javi say? Damn now I have to restart ep 5 just to see it. I picked "There's a room" one. :(

  • To be fair, most of the criticism I heard was that when a LGBT character showed up, they were pretty flat and felt more like a checklist rather than a character.

There's also the fact the game was a buggy mess and apparently had tons of flaws with its writing.

None of the LGBT characters make the fact that they are LGBT the central part of their character. In fact, the romanceable gay and lesbian characters won't even tell you unless you flirt with them or, for one of them, when you do his special quest.

The biggest problem is that the only LGBT squadmates are female, so male/male relationships got too little screentime.

The writing had a change of tone, but it isn't bad at all. It just has a more laid-back and casual tone in comparison to previous Mass Effect games due to the age and lack of combat/leadership experience of the protagonist. Of course, people who prefer a more serious tone like in previous game probably won't like the writing for that. It doesn't mean the writing is objectively bad, it isn't.

The game also didn't have more bugs than most open world games release with. Let's put this in perspective:

Issues I had with Andromeda's missions: 3 bugged "tasks" (side missions that are irrelevant to the progress of the game). Two of them were fixed by official patches. One left.

Issues I had with Skyrim's quests: Tons of bugged side quests and a game-breaking bug in the Civil War quest line, which is one of the two main quest lines of the game, that stopped me from completing it for the Empire side until I downloaded an unofficial patch made by fans, not by Bethesda.

ACTUAL problems with Andromeda: All aliens of a same species have the same face, with very few exceptions, when any. The facial animations are REALLY bad (they are improving them with every new patch, but still). The Character Creator is super limited. All of these combined with the change of tone caused a bad first impression on many people, and the internet exploded.

I think it has something to do with the politics of the developers that got on people's nerves. One example I saw was a Bioware developer working on the game that was blantantly being rascist toward white people and was actively okay with killing white people.

I know people sometimes overexxagerate the inclusion of LGBT people in fiction but I have seen instances where companies just include LGBT for the sake of filling a checklist rather than writing a good story and it's hard not to see where the other side is coming from regarding Andromeda's tone and characters.

  • Ah yes, there was that issue too. And then the game came out and the Character Creator's lightest skin tone was still pretty tan, and it all came back to the surface. At least they are patching in some stuff for the Character Creator in the next weeks.

I think nowadays people are too polarised, so we have people that scream "over-representation" or "SJW pandering" at the mere sight of a LGBT character in a game. But it is not like that's new for the series or for BioWare.

For only one game, the crewmates in Andromeda were very well-developed. You can see that they put a lot of effort making them diverse and likeable, really pushing the idea of you all being a family. I really can't complain about the characters (I will keep complaining about the alien faces and the facial animations though).

  • Idk but i felt that scene was gay as well

  • Can someone find me the video of picking the "So they say" option when Jesus flirts with Javier. I was clingy instead.

  • I mean the racist developer was fired way before Andromeda was actually released so.

it's hard not to see where the other side is coming from regarding Andromeda's tone and characters.

Things happening in other media doesn't mean they should attack a separate game just assuming its the same. The fact of the matter is that, in Andromeda, not only was much more effort put into straight male romances, but heterosexuality is just as out there as homosexuality.

If homosexuality is shoved down your throat in Andromeda, so is heterosexuality. And yet no-one ever complains about that.

If you are that bothered by two men flirting you are homophobic.

  • Well, the main problem with the Andromeda trans woman was her reveal of her "dead name", especially to a stranger. Trans people simply do NOT reveal the "dead name", otherwise it would not be a "dead name". The developers of Mass Effect made the character feel like "she was needed for our minority-checklist".
