Thoughts on the David ending?

What do you guys think about the ending where David lives? For those who don't know, you can either tell him to leave, or ask him to stay... and if you do that, he still doesn't come with you, but then reappears for like a second at Richmond, but that's it; he doesn't get a church scene, or see's Clementine off like Kate does.

He instead is apparently not talking to anyone any more...

Do you think this is indicative of the fact Telltale just wanted him dead? Or is there supposed to be a finer point here that I'm missing?

Either way, it sucks seeing keeping David alive (which isn't easy) amounts to nothing.

  • Probably the most dramatic ending, in my opinion, was Kate turning (Javi shoots her) and David comes back. I felt like that was a good way to end the game and I'm happy that I actually got that ending.

I'm not saying it was good that Kate died, I'm just saying that it made ANF a good story. Plus, I admired Javi's facial expressions in the "Kate turning" scene.

  • Also, during the 3 days we missed, David probably saw Kate's dead body and couldn't take it, so he left Richmond and went on his own.

I think it's completely uncharacteristic of him to leave his family behind when he was fighting so much for them to all be together in the last episode just three days earlier. Although, it's not the first time he's mentioned leaving everyone behind in the game, so if that's what he decides to do then he's a deserter.

I personally believe that David wasn't meant to survive. He's too stubborn and even though he thinks he has his heart in the right place, he often puts what he wants before other people and their safety. No one in their right mind would have taken just Gabe back "home" (which doesn't exist anymore) when two minutes before he's wanting everybody plus Clem in the car. He deserted his family then, even if they weren't getting along. He doesn't think clearly and he makes rash decisions, expecting everyone else to follow suit because he has a false sense of superiority. He's not all bad, but he certainly misplaces a lot of confidence when it comes down to who to trust and what the right decision is.

  • Erm, I did not understand what you just said. Sorry.

  • It was my original ending, David gets back to Richmond and gives Javi the coldest stare. I was kinda disappointed, I thought they were going to discuss things like grown-ups, talk about Richmond, leadership, about Kate and Gabe. But I guess not.

  • I dunno. Saving him didn't even help either cause he can't reunite with his family and just leaves.

  • I got that ending too in the first play (currently on scumbag Javi play) and was like wth? but ya I felt like Javier was being forcefully nudged toward a romance with Kate the entire game. Even if u completely ignore her advances and say all the right things to David he still gets pissed off and gives Javi a beat down. I felt like I was supposed to kill him and that pissed ME off bc personally, I was much more intrigued by the dynamic between the brothers than some sappy forced romance.

From what it looks like I really don't think telltale had anything planned for David and just kept him optionally alive for choice variation. I think the preferred ending is Javier,Kate and Gabe surviving with David dead at the end especially since out of the 3 he is the least savable.

  • Can Gabe survive along with David?

  • Yes.

  • I wonder if that's determinate? David didn't seem cold in my playthrough when he came back.

  • What? David died in my game, what the hell. I feel betrayed right now. D: How do you even get him to live? I came after him after he left in the truck and Clem went with Kate. Maybe that's why?

  • In order to save David, both Javi and Clem must go after him and Gabe. You can't save Kate that way, though.

Yeah, that's why. You notice how there was a particular zombie that managed to bite him, the one you kick away? Yeah, if Clem also went with you, she's able to kill that one before it's able to get close enough to bite him.

  • I kept him alive in my original (play through) with the help of Clementine.
