Why was the aftermath of saving Doug in Episode 1 so rushed compared to saving Carly?

When you save Carly you get an option to tell the gang about your past before they found out from Larry, but with Doug all you find out is that he really liked Carly and he's a technology nerd.

Why is Doug's narrative rushed?

  • Probably thought the majority of people would go for Carly because she had a vagina. I chose Doug because yeah Carly had a gun and was moderately attractive but the dummy didn't even know how to use batteries. What kind of moron in her late 20s or early 30s doesn't know how to use batteries? Doug seemed like he'd be a better use to the group because he was smart and could think up stuff, like his tin can alarms as an early warning system.

  • Carley is also a romance option for Lee, helps him fight off the bandits and has her radio and batteries side mission after you first meet her in episode 1. I'm pretty sure Telltale regretted not doing more with Doug but it was possibly due to time constraints or perhaps they just didn't know what direction to take with his character?

  • They should have made Doug invent a cure if you save him and he cures the world and there doesn't have to be a s2 or s3. Maybe people would save him then.

  • That's silly lol

  • Almost as silly as Doug not having a backstory leading up to the s1e1 major decision

  • He had a backstory. He was an AV nerd. It's not the most complicated or involved backstory, but it's not nothing.

  • Definitely like 95% less character development than Carpet got

  • doug lucky it wasn't walker come that way using that string bell thing

  • I think this is because Carley resonates and develops more as a character than Doug does. She knows of Lee's background and later becomes a romance option etc.

  • It's unfortunate that they didn't really develop Doug's character as much as Carley, especially in episode 1. My first play through, I did feel the pressure and it was hard to choose, but I went with Carley because her character was just a lot more interesting to me from what I'd seen in the episode. There was so much interaction with her. I thought she'd be a more major character for longer to be honest. I wish they had given Doug just a little more personality, and given more real time with Lee to problem solve. To me, he just kinda stands beside you with some minor dialogue while outside the pharmacy. I think Carley walking in to talk to you in the back room revealing she knows your past, and going with you to the motel with Glenn just tipped the favor way too much. If they just gave him some more screen time that was equal, I think a lot more people would have gone with him. IMO it was probably the biggest flaw overall with season 1 (not that there were many!).

I suppose the most you can do with Doug that you can't with Carley is that you can trip one of the St. John brothers. shrugs

Doug's narrative was rushed because the vast majority of players chose Carley and so the writers invested more time in her. It's not fair, but that's the route Telltale chose to take.

Not all choices have an even outcome and some may seem more right than others. You could say the same for the take Conrad's deal / shoot Conrad choice in S3. Regardless of whichever choice made sense in the moment, ultimately the former turned out to be the one you got the most out of (a lot of character development for Conrad and the ability for him to survive the whole season) without any real (lasting) consequences.

  • Cause Carley proved more popular and was more story-relevant. At the very least, he was generally doing things in the background, had a nice little friendship with Ben, got a few funny moments here and there, and got to help take out Andy and Linda. He also had at least one cut scene where he was responsible for trapping B's walker under the light pole. Personally, I think that could've compensated by giving him Glenn's role at the Motel with Irene, since it more or less fits his character and would make more sense given he ends up being weighed against Carley anyway.

  • See like I said we already have that kind of topic, maybe one should be moderated… or not :/
