Anyone else not like Clementine in Season 3?

Hi everyone,

I wanted to see what others felt after finishing season 3 as I just recently did. I honestly found Clem to be repulsive as a person in this season. I realize that she was growing up and had to be tough but I just found her character to be genuinely unlikable - a first for the series in my opinion. I felt that she constantly made poor judgments of characters and the fact that there was a decision to inject AJ even though the doctor said they did all they could do made me really dislike her judgments. She made me distrust Javi's brother (I forget his name) for a reason of which I wouldn't have had I not heard her story and had previous likings of her. I feel like if she was a new character, I wouldn't have struggled to hate her but it's her backstory that caused me to side with her so many times. After playing the flashback with AJ being sick, I genuinely hated her character. How could she be so naiive and just plain dumb? I realize she's a kid but they play her off as being so adult and smart and then to make an error in judgment like that bugged me so much. Idk. What do you guys think? Am I wrong here? Look forward to discussing.

I didn't like her this season because she was so out of place. She contributed nothing to the plot, she developed very little character, and her whole Find AJ quest wasn't even touched upon this season.

Basically, remove Clementine from this season and nothing changes.

Uberhaxornova said it best in his playthrough of Ep.5: "is Clementine only here for a romantic subplot?"

  • I hated the fact she was in this game for just fanservice instead of telling her story arc. Telltale is fucking stupid.

  • I can't wait for the two minute flashbacks of Clementine and fifteen minute episodes in Season 4.

    Yes.

  • i honestly think Lee would've hit his breaking point as well if he were still alive. for me, Clementine was the sweetest character in season 3. she'll always carry that innocence around no matter what happens.

  • Actually...I'm fairly certain that Clem is gonna be the main focus in the next installment. Can't say WHY though.

Well...that's NOT entirely true. Clem's choice of who to go after in episode 5 is actually VERY important in deciding who lives and dies at the end. After doing some digging, I've concluded that Clem's decision of who to go after towards the end is predicated upon the choices the player makes during her flashback sequences in Episodes 2 and 3.

  • I do not like how they want to show us how badass she is. For example in first episode with this tree. or easy beat this two walkers with bat in episode three and saying 'more careful with that' but there Javier does not need her, he can handle this then. Her behavior for me is alright, she pass through a lot.

  • oh lmao my bad. it popped up in my notifications as a big-ass image so i couldnt see it.

  • i also didn't like her this season. she was not MY clem at all. my clem wouldn't be so reckless to shoot a man over bad bullets or be willing to kill another to get the location of aj. what i also didn't like about her, but did understand was her not liking david for taking aj away from her from ep 1 to the flashback in ep3. but from there, telling us how we can't trust him when they sneak back into richmond and so on, i really didn't like her tough personality which completely contrasts my clem, or how reckless and heartless she could be at times.

  • I usually just get used to whoever we wind up with. But Clem has clearly lost much of her childhood innocence and overall optimism, which really saddens me.

  • But the doctor is obviously stoned when he says the medicine wouldn't work, How could I trust a doctor saying to use that medicine for the baby won't work if I think he says that just to keep it for himself and get high again ?

  • I think telltale did well at forging her as a character of note in the past seasons. Being known as the pigtails-n-baseball-hat-wearing kid that has a gentle and optimistic yet slightly somber demeanor drew everyone to love her. Sadly, it's just too bad they wanted to ruin that image and just used her purely for fan appeal, really.

  • Honestly I just couldn't care less about Clementine. There wasn't even that much to hate or like about her considering she did nothing and randomly appeared and reappeared.

Yes, but that role could have been done by literally anyone else. The point @MRSHYGUY45 was making, really, is that Clementine could be cut out and replaced by some other random character, and the overall plot wouldn't change a single bit. And, to be fair, she's so unlike Clementine anyway she may as well just be an emotionless clone in disguise. It's a valid enough point that you've made, that the person going with you or going their own way changes things - kind of - but we have to bear in mind that any other character could have done it.

If you replaced Clementine in A New Frontier with a brand new character that had lost a toddler they were looking after, the overall "plot" - and I use that word loosely, in the case of A New Frontier - would be the exact same. And that's because Clementine's part of the 'story' wasn't ever properly touched on, because it was never given a meaningful ending, instead being shoved to 'second place' while we watch a family drama - a family I didn't care about, might I add - with zombies unfold, with some of the most unlikable people I've ever had to suffer alongside in a game. Clementine's subplot wasn't wrapped up in the slightest, and she contributed the square root of nothing to the actual story, besides flailing around trying to look 'bad ass', and instead making me roll my eyes and sigh heavily.

So, yea, the role she had is kind of important, but Clementine as a character is completely replaceable.

  • Agreed. -

  • Finally someone who agrees with me. She was fucking awful this season

  • edited June 2017

She was literally just there to be there. I cringed whenever they tried to make her "badass", it was embarrassing in season 2 and it still is.

  • I know, right? You'd think they'd know how to implement their recurring main character in a constructive way, but nope!

As it stands, you could probably replace her with Ava or Mariana and get a much stronger story for it.

Dude, there is a shitload of people that dont like this season and consider it as a garbage.

  • I didn't like her in this season because she was there to serve as a prop for Javier's development and to ensure she was at a neutral point for season 4 (or maybe a DLC).

Clementine wasn't there to be her own character and whatever complaints I may have about the Gracia clan, that certainly wasn't true for any of them.

Definitely. In general, I haven't been a fan of her's since the start of season 2, but ANF has been the icing on the cake. Clementine just isn't an interesting character. Despite her often times rampant fan base and glorified status on these forums and elsewhere, her character is very one-note and lacks any depth. The love for her, in my view, seems to be almost entirely based around some sort of parental instinct and not out of any actual investment in where she'll go. She's a young girl surviving in a harsh world and...? That's nearly it. The direction Telltale took in this season- the edgy, but ever so badass "don't give a fuck" attitude and the lack of any actual involvement in the plot, outside of being a background character to keep certain fans happy- only proves that.

And it's disappointing. Because she could've really came out on her own in this season, had the endings of season 2 been used to develop her, but alas, the poor decision making and determination of being lazy on Telltale's part once again prevails.

  • Yeah as has been mentioned before she really served no in universe purpose for even being in ANF. She was included strictly to get people to buy the game and that is it.

  • Fifteen minutes? The friend is still being very generous.

  • In fact, Telltale did NOT fully rely on the Garcia family's charisma and found it better to include Clementetine as a way of saying that this is a true TWD game. As I said before, replace Clementine with any other character (which would have been the right choice, since TWD is about people, not zombies) and we would have a more cohesive story.

This. People have said it before, but you totally could've rewritten her flashbacks to reflect having Ava or especially Mariana in the role instead.
