Why Hate The Kate?
Why do so people hate Kate so much? I realize what the obvious drawback is on her character as a whole, but I really don't get the sheer degree of it otherwise.

thots deserve hate
She smokes weed, really wants to bang the character I'm controlling, and she generally just wants life to be chill and easy. In real life, I wouldn't mind having her has a friend, maybe even a girlfriend.
However, she would not be the first person I'd want to travel with in the zombie apocalypse. Her priorities would not line up with what she needs to do to survive.
I liked her instantly because of her weed smoking abilities.
Anyone else dislike Kate

I'm sure there were other threads but I don't have time to fish for them like I did for the Gabe thread.
Drug user and cheater, always try to part Javi from David, abandon David ??? Really ? Does that woman understand how brothers realtions even work ?
Because she was super-attached to Javier in general and a lot of the players didn't like the fact that there was no option to fully reject her before Episode 4's ending + also the fact that other characters in the story constantly saw Javi & Kate as a couple, even if you rejected all the advances from her.
It's literally like in elementary schools. There's a girl who likes/loves a certain guy a lot. She becomes attached to him. The guy doesn't like her. So what does the guy do? Reject her. But in ANF, there was no real way to reject her before Episode 4 and even if you did reject her, you'll still get "haunted" by the relationship, which never possibly happened.
But as for other reasons, I'd say because she's irresponsible, she fucks things up a lot, her character's writing is seen as inconsistent and most female characters in Telltale's TWD are quite hated in general.
I don't hate her, I even got the Kate Ending. But I can see why a lot of people dislike her.
Because Kate cares more about her loveness on Javier than her own family. She was tired of David from the beginning and she could have easily told him she doesn't want to be with him anymore but she kept lying to him all the time causing him to blame all this on Javi. She forced Javi to flee with her in Episode 3, leaving his brother behind and she is somehow surprised Javi doesn't want to leave like really bitch? Did you fucking forget that Javi was his brother? Do you even know what family means?
I told her to fuck off so many times and she should have realised that there was no time for fucking Twilight moments and she did nothing but trouble due to her love relationship.
If you kissed Kate in Episode 4, she kisses Javier right in front of her husband which caused him to try to kill his brother over jealously. Just how could she just do that? Did she forget that David had a bad temper? Javier almost died because of her. She is a bitch, FACT.
It's because how her character is mainly used to force a poorly written love triangle plot on the player, and it's handled in such a clumsy fashion that makes Kate more unlikable than she's supposed to be.
It also doesn't help that we don't really know enough about Kate and David's relationship to understand why Kate would want nothing to do with her husband in a personal level.
I found her annoying and way too pushy in regards to the forced romance subplot. If you reject her she gets all huffy and acts like you lead her on anyway. And if she's alive in your ending she says "I need space" in a cold way. Like, woman, grow up. I know you're not in a happy marriage but for the love of god back off and get over the fact that I'm just not into you.
Were it not for that she would've been ok, but her pining for Javier's affection overshadowed everything else IMO.
Pretty sure it's implied that David is a wife hitter.
• Episodes 3-4: Hates TNF, wants to leave and doesn't think it's their fight.
•Episode 5: loves TNF, wants to save it, and thinks it's her responsibilty.
WAT.
I'm all for subtleties when it comes to storytelling, but if David was indeed implied to be a wife beater/hitter by Telltale, then I'd say that they did a rather poor job of it.
I can't think of a scene that shows credible evidences implying that David frequently hits Kate at some points in their marriage, or justifies Kate's disdain towards David before the apocalypse. It doesn't help that the two rarely interacts or even discuss why Kate doesn't want anything to do with David when David appears to be faithful towards her.
The trouble with Kate is there's a big difference between what we're told about her and what we're shown. At no point in time are we given an instance of Kate being the smart one or holding the family together. David isn't shown as being anymore abusive toward Kate than she is toward him. They have a bad marriage: however it's Kate that looks bad when they reunite later.
David went against the community rules to take her to Lingard rather than quarantine. He fears for his family's safety while she talks about ditching him and running away with his remaining living child that's no relation to her and she's openly spoken about resenting - that's both before and after David's life is in danger.
I'm not against those who chose to smoke weed, but she was both reckless and cruel to do so in the van. The driver already has reduced visibility at night - even a contact high can reduce reaction time putting their lives in needless danger. Gabe displays disgust upon waking - so she's putting the drug in the kids system against their will. That's abuse.
Whether you romance her or not, she plays the brothers against each other. David trusts Kate's word over Javier.
All this being said I like Kate as a character, but definitely not as a person. She does make Gabe's character a lot more sympathetic as he grew up for four years unwanted with someone that was likely worse to him since he also resembles and has behaviors of his father.
You gotta understand the bottom line of the issue with Kate. Kate fell for her husband's brother (which is okay so far since it's understandable - considering the circumstances). Kate finds out her husband is alive, but abruptly wants to abandon him while taking both his brother and son along with her (this is where shit is starting to go downhill). She doesn't care about the fact that her husband's life is on the line, that the man she supposedly loves (Javier)'s brother is going to be executed, and she still wants to take his son. She does not care about New Frontier taking over other communities just to fuel their own. Suddenly after she makes one mistake, she feels that taking care of Richmond is her top priority. She confesses her love to her husband's brother, and STILL wants to abandon him even though that will surely lead to his death. At one of the worst possible times she confesses her love for her husband's brother in front of both of them - without Javier's consent. After the death of her husband (optional) she almost immediately wants to start a family with her husband's brother.
It's not implied at all! Not once did she flinch around David. She had no bruises, and showed no fear. HELL, she was the one to hit David! David didn't even have a reaction to hit back. Had David actually been an abusive husband, he would have hit her naturally as a reaction at least. If anything, Kate should receive MORE backlash for hitting her spouse because domestic violence shouldn't be tolerated no matter what sex the victim is.
Huh. Though the point of this thread is to directly gauge why that is the case for so many people.
That is a fair point. David, Gabe, and Mariana were Javier's family so the relationships with them made sense, but Kate is apparently a childhood friend who's backstory beyond being a trophy wife is never elaborated on outside of the sequence where you can reject her. And unfortunately, her role as a determinant love interest ended up being more emphasized due to her lack of screentime and development.
Not quite sure where the inconsistent complaints come from outside of maybe the final episode and even that has a reason, gamechanging as it may be.
Yeah, unfortunately, that was almost certainly meant to primarily be the moment when she finally calls David out but it coincided with triggering a fight over her feelings for Javier.
Yeah, I know. That was the obvious drawback I was referencing.
Actually, it was relatively discernible from the Part 2 flashback that if there was any abuse going on, it would've been verbal. In hindsight, it's just a matter of both being unhappy in the marriage, in part due to David's high standards, that led to a lot of arguments that gradually messed up their relationship.
Honestly, I think the sudden wave of hate Kate started getting in Above the Law was because so many assumed that and whiplashed when the episode went out of it's way to make David seem like this great guy years later.
Actually, she only slaps him if you kissed her previously.
Unfortunately, that seems to be the primary case for a lot of people. The fact that the story more or less neglects doing things with her in favor of centering everything around David(which admittedly was the case since the beginning) didn't help.
Why do people annoyingly say this. No it isn't implied at all its just some bullshit you made it up in your mind
Whoops. I'll carry on with my answer, if it helps.
It's likely because some feel that the game presents Kate in a better light than what she deserves, considering that some point out that her behaviour in the later seasons seems worse than her initial demeanour suggests.
It doesn't help that Kate receives no repercussions for instigating the fight between Javier and David, where she either taunts David by kissing his brother and revealing their new relationship in front of him, or spitefully tells Javier how 'she couldn't believe that she had feelings for him', without even making it clear to David that it was a one-sided crush when he misinterprets that Javier is dating Kate behind his back.
With Gabe in Episode 4 when he snitches his uncle out to everyone, you can call him out on his actions. But with Kate? No-one brings up how she had essentially caused the two brothers to fight and almost kill each other over her.
I think something everyone is overlooking there is the fact that she wanted to leave earlier because of the New Frontier's actions(Arresting Javier, Killing Mariana, Injuring her, and destroying Prescott) and the fact that David was about to start a civil war. She was understandably afraid and didn't want to lose anyone else to them, which likely would've included David if he'd actually come with them.
In regards to the final two episodes, she decides to help save David once she finds out Joan is gonna put him on public trial and that a herd is forming outside Richmond's walls(probably drawn there by Badger's truck), being in charge of having an escape vehicle ready so they can grab him and get him to safety when the inevitable riot breaks out. And when that fell through due to the riot that broke out due to David/Javier attacking Clint/Joan, Joan/Clint fled, and she accidentally blew a hole in the wall(which I still don't get), she decided to take responsibility for it after seeing how the active danger of the herd invasion was affecting the people by going along with the group to get the construction equipment.
Unfortunately, David decided to throw in the towel and just abandon Richmond when they actually had the means to save it, which angered Kate enough to finally declare that she's leaving him. After unintentionally causing a fight to break out between the brothers(which I feel is a dumb, contrived plot point in general) due to David's long running jealousy of Javier and the former drives off with Gabe in tow, she decided to just focus on the problem at hand instead of wasting time chasing someone she knows won't listen to reason.
Agreed.
Well, at the very least, the choices presented by her often involved taking the more practical route on the current situation, namely avoiding unnecessary trouble by staying in one place for too long rather than risk the group's lives by not leaving while the opportunity is available.
But I do really wish that we got to see her do more than that in regards to the group's activities, which is actually one of my issues with Thicker than Water.
Huh. I didn't know that. Then again, I don't have weed connections.
Being a bit dramatic there, don'cha think?
Plus she had her window rolled down, but I guess the odor could still get back there.
I think it's pretty obvious that was mostly unintentionally outside of Part 2's flashback(given she rolls her eyes, though she seemed a bit surprised when David actually came in).
I can't say haven't had a barely similar thought recently, but definitelynot that degree. In fact, Kate's paradoxical favoritism towards Gabe was one of several things I picked up on back in Part 1 and was really hoping it would be developed/deconstructed, but then again, you can say that about her character in general.
No, she gets upset regardless. I'm not talking about the slap. It's not to the same degree per say but she still acts like you'd flirted with her previously.
I'm pretty sure that's more a result of her having feelings for Javier for over 4 years and finally having him just flat out say "No" after everything they've been through with the kids. I might be forgetting a detail or two admittedly, but that's the vibe I got.
It doesn't matter if that was the case, her behavior was honestly childish to me.
Hmm. Honestly, I got the impression that she might still be a virgin, for some reason.
Well maybe lol, could be she really wanted to get laid and that made her extra salty.
Yeah, seriously. If it really was an epic female equivalent of blueballs, her reaction was actually pretty restrained.
Poor Kate.
I liked her. She didnt sold me unlike the rest of Garcia family.
kcuF uoy Aggin!
segdelivirp drow-N
Uh...k?
lmaooooo.
She didnt want a brief struggle for David. Which actually, if she was able to do that, Richmond would not fucked up eventually(no explosion and all)
She didnt want to destroy Richmond, she was about to leave only and Richmond was fine. She made the crash and then of course she felt responsible and tried to fix it. I dont have any trouble to understand her behaviour.
Um... and who is the one who started the fight between David and Javier in Episode 5?
Basically, she was originally injured/vulnerable, scared, and just trying to keep the family out of needless conflict, then she decided to help save David when the civil war didn't happen and wanted to clean up the mess when things ended up going horribly wrong anyway.
