I feel like initially ANF was suppose to be a spinoff like 400days
but got stretched out into 5 eps and relabeled as season 3. Clem probably only was suppose to have a cameo.

Would've been better off as a spinoff.
"Spinoff" is the best description of ANF out there.
I think if they wanted to introduce new characters..they needed a story that would take it's time to let us get to know them....you cannot just plop in 4 years into the apocalypse and make us play someone new who we do not know.
EXACTLY!!!!
Sadly I'm certain that ANF was always suppose to be Season 3. It only feels like a spinoff because there was no way Telltale could continue Clementine's story naturally with the multiple endings of Season 2. Telltale would have to make five separate stories for each ending.
Whether or not it was supposed to.. it would have been better as a spin-off. Scrap Clem from it to stop biased choices and character development.. Write out a clear, consistent story that isn't tied down by events of past seasons.. and there ya go!
Personally, I feel that they still could have done something good with those endings, while keeping ANF's story similar for all.
I think they should have just made 5 separate flashback sequences for Clem based on those endings. None of them would affect the main story in a major way, and they'd all end with the death of whoever you were with to keep things on the same path... But if it were presented over the course of the 5 episodes, it would give us a feeling of pride in our previous choices knowing that it had somewhat of an effect, at least towards "Clementine's story".
This.
Yeah I wrote how I would have done it...thing is...the characters they had could have been so good if they had taken the time...no something went wrong in the making of this game...it is like whoever was in charge was overwhelmed and ..I dunno...I just don't AC. Especially galling after Batman which I did love...and Michonne which I think is better way better than S2.
That would've definitely been better but I don't know if that would save ANF from feeling like a spinoff.
Yeah, ANF still wouldn't have been that great.. but it would have made our Season 2 endings feel so much bigger.
If they took that idea, and merged it with the original idea from E3... it would have been (hypothetically) really good. Original Walking Dead story.. faithful to the previous seasons.. interesting plot.
Correction: It was originally envisioned as Season 3 and got relabeled A New Frontier at the halfway point, essentially making it a spinoff anyway.
Of course, because they had to include Clementine anyway, they had to come up with a subplot to motivate her and later tied her in as an ex-member of the New Frontier in order to make her presence and Javier's choices feel more important. And while this did lead to a few interesting moments, she was eventually exposed as being relatively superfluous to the rest of the story.
Personally, I will say that it is indeed the attempts to tie previous games in, as well as Telltale's falling back on old habits, that led to a number of my problems with it.
