Faith, and TWD?

I haven't played S3 yet, so please no spoilers. But from what I have heard is that many people are dissatisfied with it. I don't know if that's true or not, it's just what I've heard.

I personally think that S2 was mediocre compared to S1. And I think that Clementine being the playable character had a lot to do with it, and that the moral of the second game wasn't clear.

Now on the subject of faith, to say it hasn't played a role in the TWD series, both the game and TV series, is a gross denial. I don't know about the comic series as I've never read it.

I think most people who've played the first game will agree is that the moral of it is that you don't have to be a prisoner of your past, that anyone can find redemption if they truly want it and are willing to amend their characters to the best of their ability.

Lee in fact can express a belief in God at Hershel's farm, when he talks about Devine Providence. And Kenny himself says that he's a Christian.

The moral of the story regarding the 2nd game, from what I can conclude, is taken from the Bible. There is a passage in there, and I believe it's taken from the book of Isaiah; that says: "And a little child shall lead them."

And throughout the course of the game, the adult characters often times look to Clementine, which point back to that Biblical passage I quoted.

Clementine can also express a belief in God, or a higher power in certain points of the game, by saying that Rebecca is with Alvin, and that maybe Kenny will see Katja and Duck again one day.

Carver also uses a lot of Biblical metaphors when he talks about "Lambs to the slaughter", and "How they should welcome Luke's group back into the fold."

Now on the TV series, Carol has expressed a belief in God a few times. She expresses a belief that her daughter Sophia is in a better place, and right before she leaves Alexandria, she clutches a cross in her hand so tightly that her hand begins to bleed, after she watches Rick execute a Savior.

Rick Grimes is obviously an atheist, but he has regard for those who have faith, as is shown when he stands up to Carl on Carol's behalf after she loses her daughter.

Early in the series, Rick even has somewhat of an angry conversation with God after they come upon a Church, shortly after Sophia disappeared, and right before they meet Hershel. He said that he chose to put his faith elsewhere, yet he still spoke as if somewhere deep down he felt that God was real, though he was obviously not a fan of God.

Daryl as well seemed to express some possible belief in a higher power of sorts, when he told that story of the Cherokee rose to Carol, after Sophia went missing.

Beth seemed to be religous, as is shown when she seemed to feel that Hershel was still alive and looking out for her and Daryl in the beginning of the episode of S4, the one where Daryl and Beth bond over moonshine, and burn down at old shack.

Hershel was probably the one who had the strongest belief in God, which he eluded to many a times on his farm, and he even said that it was something that kept him going, which he revealed in a conversation with Merle at the prison.

"For a while there, not only had I lost the good Book, I'd lost my way." - Hershel to Merle.

Merle himself even expressed some faith, or at the very least some religious knowledge by finishing the quotation of a Bible verse from the gospel of Mathew that Hershel had started.

Father Gabriel is obviously religious, so I'm not gonna delve to deeply into him as his title kinda says it all.

I think the writers on the show have done a very good job at weaving in the subject of faith into both genres of TWD. It's not overbearing, yet at the same time it shows that faith is not useless, and that for some it can help them keep going forward even in tough situations.

What do you think?

I dont think that writers should get religion more involved with characters. People are struggling, they are in a huge surviving competiton. And if there is a God exist in that universe, why is it let its creatures getting torn apart by bunch of walkers or let them starved to death ? or why is it let its creatures keep lose people they are close with them? It is because there is an "exam" has been going on that ends either when you died or there will be no one left you can lose ? Personally, religion is not a necessary concept that mainly has to be focused. People can believe a religion but I dont like it when they keep constantly mention God and they believe that God fixing everything someday.

  • I dont see a problem with it personally.
