The Stranger should've taken Glenn's role in A New Day

edited July 2017 in The Walking Dead

Instead of the cute cameo we got of Glenn I think that his role should've been replaced by The Stranger. I know you can argue that Mark deserves the spot even more and I hear you but I think establishing The Stranger as a great guy and very helpful makes the ending even more tragic and heart breaking. At the end of A New Day he could take his station wagon to go meet up with his wife and children at their house. Then you never hear from them again and at the end of Starved for Help it turns out he was headed back for the Motor Inn to see if the group was still there and the rest is history. I know you could ask why Kenny would rob the Stranger's car but that could make for an even bigger decision. Do you possibly rob a friend or leave it in hopes he returns?

  • That wouldn't be possible since Glenn is in the comics apart of Rick's crew.

  • My point is that Glenn isn't in the episode at all. The Stranger is the character in his place. Not that Glenn doesn't exist or anything just that he's off somewhere else not involved with the story.

That wouldn't be possible since Glenn is in the comics apart of Rick's crew.

  • You're saying Glenn shouldn't have been in it all right. But I like the idea.

  • Yeah completely out of the episode. Not that Glenn IS the Stranger, the Stranger replaces his role.

  • so we end up fucking over our boy without even meaning to.

  • Pretty much yeah. "We're just monsters that came out of the woods..." sort of has more of a punch. Of course Lee can stand against taking it because it's their friend and he wants to believe he's coming back.

so we end up fucking over our boy without even meaning to.

  • Interesting. For a second, I thought you were that guy who thought Glenn was the one who 'kidnapped' Clementine.

Also, feel free to post similar ideas here!

  • Thanks for the link. I wasn't aware of the thread. I will check it out.

  • You know, I also thought you mean that Glenn should have taken the Stranger's role.

But I like your idea. It could have worked better than how it did. It could even explain why the Stranger focused on Lee even if he wasn't a part of the theft. He would have had a bond with Lee that he felt was broken (since Lee didn't stop him). The broken bond would make him hating Lee the most make more sense than.... seriously, not quite sure why he hated the non-thieving Lee more than Kenny. I guess because of Clementine, but a previous bond would have been pretty cool.

  • Sorry I should've titled it better.

But thank you. I appreciate it. Yeah to have a decent friendship forming in episode 1 and to see it completely mangled in episode 5 would be heart breaking and shocking.

  • I like the mysterious, creepy vibe of The Stranger so meh

  • Fair enough.

  • Interesting viewpoint. No, seriously. I mean that.

Its just wouldn't be canon in any way, shape, or form.

  • I really regret the title of this thread. I am not saying that Glenn is the Stranger. I'm saying the Stranger would replace Glenn's role in the episode. I'm well aware of the comic source material lol.

Phrasing is important, though. Future reference.

  • Hey, gotta keep the ink flowing. Plus, it's better to keep similar discussions to a small number of threads if possible.

You always gotta plug your thread, Huh?

  • But then wouldn't the mystery of who he was also be removed, along with a lot of players anger towards him before they found out who he was?

  • That would have been a way bigger plot twist and most players would not recognize the car they are stealing from unless it was pointed out. Only one thing the voice would probably be recognized through the walkie talkie. And if it did happen like this Glenn could probably appear as a cameo in another episode.

  • The actual game had Roger Jackson do the voice on the radio to make the Stranger seem sinister, while Anthony Lam did his actual voice to get across that he's just a normal guy. The same could be done here.

  • That's actually a pretty interesting idea.

  • Oh. I never new that. So I guess this could work perfectly.

  • Plus Glenn did have the walkie talkie and didn't return it so it is more of a reason for why the stranger can communicate using it

  • I personally didn't think the thread title was confusing at all. I like the idea but I feel like people would notice the same voice actor in the radio and it would ruin the twist

  • I disagree. What makes The Stranger great is that he's a guy that you don't know, never knew, and yet you have changed his life so drastically (or your group has) by one action. People generally fear what they don't know, so to have this unknown force come at you the way he did made that one of the most intense moments in the series.

  • The stranger had a different voice actor from the one on the walkie.

  • I understand where you're coming from. I just personally have to disagree because of my own taste. Not that you're wrong. There's no wrong or right here. I just kind of wished there was more of an emotional gut punch with this character. I felt no sympathy for him when he was telling what happened to him and his family. Most of it was his own fault but I might've felt horrible if Lee and him were friends in A New Day. I think it's a matter of taste for me as I said. Either way, it's still a great conclusion.

  • Well that's dumb

  • Not really, considering it was there to make you think he was far more threatening than he actually was for the reveal.

  • Interesting idea, but I feel like that takes away the mystery from The Stranger's character. The ambiguity is part of what made him so interesting to me.

  • He just sounded like an old creeper on the walkie talkie

  • I'm fairly sure any voice would sound threatening in that situation so it should have been the same guy but whatever.

  • I really hate the cameos in Walking dead.Glenn could of been anyone else and it wouldn't of made a difference.

  • I'm not saying it wouldn't have worked, but I like the idea that the Stranger isn't a built up villain and it isn't very dramatic. He's just a regular ass dude that you just completely fucked over. You don't even learn his name. It super realistic to a zombie apocalypse.
