Chuck, TWD Season 1

With season 4 of TWD coming out soon, I've been replaying the entire series. I think Chuck or Charles, if you're fancy, is one of the most underrated characters Telltale has ever created. Thoughts?

  • Chuck is a very underrated character especially for the importance he had in S1 and a underutilized character as well. I still think that Chuck was killed off way too early and could have stayed around for a good bit and contributed a lot more. Plus I loved the fact he'd play his guitar when you could free roam around areas.

  • Yes, totally agree! He felt like a grandfather to everyone. Plus, he saves Clems life twice. First, he told Lee to cut her hair and teach her to use a weapon. Then he saves her life on the streets of Savannah. You're right, they could have kept him around and fleshed out his character even more.

Eh, honestly, I'd say he risks being a little overblown thanks to certain fans.

But ignoring that, yes, he was a nice and resonate side character.

  • I can respect that perspective as well. It did bum me out that his fate was met off screen. I always sided with Lee that he deserved better.

  • He was one of those WISE old mentor characters with good advice. He was introduced went the rest of the cast was having a really bad day. He was there for one episode and the beginning of the 5ep before being killed. Whitch was sad and I haven't a clue of finding why he was killed off, guess the writer was thinking "Well this is the last episode, and we need to move these character here and her for last location to fight villain. However not everyone need to survive. Ok first off what about this old man, its not like can excape the walkers anyhow so we will just kill him off here off screen."

Yeah they could have done more thing him I would of love to see him putting a plan together how to take down the stranger with rest of the main cast but we will never know the "what ifs".

Yeah, his death was definitely an oddity in Season 1, though they still managed to have some bit of pathos attached.

Better than some of the later Season's deaths, at least.

Oh definitely. With an average of thirty characters appearing per Season, there are bound to be some that are less recognized than others.

Funnily enough, I was actually thinking about one this very midday--Alvin Sr..

  • You're absolutely right! I think there was a lot of untapped potential with his story as well. For the brief time he was present, he was funny, compassionate, honest, and brave.

  • I loved Chuck, he's honestly one of my favorite characters in this game, and the way they treated him in Episode 4 was one of the lamest deaths in the series (up there with Kenny, Nick, and Jane's).

  • Absolutely! I was disappointed with a few aspects of season 2...chief among them-the way Nick, Kenny, and Uncle Pete meet their end. I joked, recently, that I would totally play an origins story game about Chuck & Pete.

  • Very interesting re: Alvin Sr. I thought he was a strong character as well but didn't get the development he deserved. I completely agree with you. He was strong and very diplomatic.

I liked Chuck. I think he was a very good character, one that kept a cool head, was brave and selfless, was definitely intelligent, and who had a kindness about him.

Unfortunately his back-story is one that was all-to-real, and that is somebody who no doubt either had a very good and successful life, or a very promising life laid-out before him, yet he came to ruin due to an addiction.

Alcoholism is an addiction, and can be treated, if the person in question wants help, and wants to truly clean up their life. Being a drunk on the other hand is a choice, because the person in question chooses not to get help, even when they realize they need it.

Anyone can change if they want to, but the problem is that most people are not willing to put forth the effort so that they can change. So if you ever hear someone say the phrase "that's just how I am", that's a copout, and what they're really saying is is that that's how they choose to be. Always remember that!

But back to the original topic, It is a shame that we never got see Chuck in S2. I think he would have made wonderful addition. Personally, I think it would've been fun to play as him, seeing that we never got to know him, and I think he would've been far more interesting to play in S2, as opposed to Clementine.

I have NOT played S3, but plan to soon, so if anyone does reply to my comment about playing as Chuck as opposed to Clementine, please, NO SPOILERS for the 3rd Season. Thank you!

Not an alcoholic but that's not really fair to those struggling with alcoholism that are reluctant to seek help. We don't really know what kind of trauma these people had to experience to become dependent on alcohol to cope. Someone who'd be consider a drunk is probably suffering from addiction too and is very likely abusing the effects of alcohol to deal with their demons, which could be why they're so adamant against taking the steps toward recovery. Free will doesn't mean the person is always mentally prepared to make the right choice, and addiction can be extremely difficult to overcome without intervention. I can understand if you have strong feelings about this topic though.

  • Chuck is such an underappreciated character, he is one of the reasons Clementine is still alive. His conclusion was nothing but bad writing and NO ONE EVEN MENTIONS HIM AFTERWARDS, that is the worst thing about episode 4.

  • If Ben had done what Lee told him to do, Chuck wouldn't have died. :(

    Godammit Ben

  • Yeah, Telltale forced Ben to be such a hated character in that episode, wasn't dealing with bandits enough for us to despise him?

  • Ben was a very human character, in my opinion. I really dislike how TT wanted to make him hateable. They do this with the other kid characters, too. I just don't understand why... :(

I personally blame Molly for Chuck's death.

Apparently not, because IIRC the whole reason they had Ben do stupid shit in episode 4 was because none of their play testers were dropping him.

  • Really now?! That's...interesting.

Like, I definitely know much of the character writing is ultimately themed around getting a section of people to make certain choices, but that legit surprises me a bit.

  • Yes, this!! I never realized how bothersome that is until I read your post. No one asks a word about him! That's horrible and you're so right.

  • You're right, Chuck in season 2 or even in episode 5 would have been really neat. Broke my heart when Lee found him dead.

  • Chuck is a lot underrated, but if it wasn't him, Clementine be dead by now, cause initialy, Lee don't wanted to teach her to shoot, cut her hair and make plans, What the hell was gonna happen if Lee died and Clementine was not teached how to survive ...

  • Exactly! In all honesty, Chuck is partially responsible for who Clementine is now. He put the bug in Lee's head to teach her to shoot and keep her hair short.
