Realistically...

... if you have a baby in the apocalypse, would you take a chance on going to Wellington, a cold place, if you didn't know it existed and didn't know where it was or go to a warmer place you pretty much knew had food? I'm just wondering how many people would choose Wellington if they weren't playing a game.

  • Realistically, AJ wouldn't have survived either scenario. There wouldn't be infant formula that far into the end times. If other survivors had discovered it, they would've used it as their own food resource rather than keep it on hand in case of a baby. It has expiration dates ( while it's perfectly safe to eat most foods past their expiration dates, that only applies to a certain window of time ingredient depending, and with no flaws in the cans. )

The infant mortality rates only a few lifetimes ago much less prior to that was remarkably high, and while a wet nurse wouldn't have been absolutely necessary no one had access to a milking cow, goat, ect among the cabin situation.

Colder climates had less undead, and the existing undead had a shorter 'lifespan' as they'd freeze. The only other situation with similar advantages would be a desert climate which would dry them out. Food would be scarce as far as foraged goods, but hunting may be better with less Walkers to devour all existence. Fishing would also be safer, and many cold climate areas possess access to excellent fishing waters.

Colder climates also have less mosquitoes or no mosquitoes depending on how far north, and ticks which by all rights really should still spread the virus. Even if they didn't, they still had the possibility of carrying many nasty deadly things. Of the unnatural deaths, freezing would also be considered less painful than starvation, dehydration, sun stroke, or disease.

In the game, it boils down to whom you'd rather spend your time with or be responsible for Clementine ( and AJ because magically endless supply of infant formula is available everywhere in WD by TT ). Realistically, I'd take my chances heading north with or without Wellington. I'm fairing good with a bow, and decent at fishing. Worse came to worse, death would be relatively quick within a few hours depending on how low the temp had dropped, and not as horrific.

  • Thanks, poptarts.

  • Warmer place that I knew had food. I'm not risking my life, much less a baby's, to wander around in an icy tundra to befriend pneumonia unless I had more than adequate transportation and supplies to make the trek relatively comfortable and low risk.

Realistically, if I was out in the world, not safe in a settlement somewhere, and I got stuck with someone's baby, I'd toss it in a dumpster and leave it. Being around an infant is a sure fire way to get killed if you're not safe behind walls somewhere. Babies cry a lot when they're hungry, cold, wet, scared, etc and there's no way to stop them and its constant crying will constantly bring walkers or hostile humans down on you. Unless you happen to be a lactating woman, the only way to feed it will be to scavenge for formula and even then, you have to prepare the formula properly, with heated water for one thing, else the baby will get stomach cramps and cry non stop. Having an infant around when you're trying to survive out in the world is all but certain death.

  • Given those facts, Alvin Jr. shouldn't be alive right now. Now I wonder. Was Telltale afraid of how people would react having a baby die in her arms so they wrote it off as "Yeah, that baby's a tough one"?

  • The original No Going Back/Better to Sleep screen had Clementine alone with AJ walking off, so he's probably been meant to be kept alive since the earlier drafts. I do agree that under these circumstances, his being alive isn't really believable, but then most of The Walking Dead hasn't been.

  • Yeah that mcguffin has had plot armor his entire life. Realistically he and Clem would both have died when he was an infant because she would have gotten killed trying to scavenge formula for him. I don't have a link to any solid evidence for it, but I've read that originally players were gonna be given a choice to abandon AJ at the end of season 2, but then it all got redone and that option was cut. If true I'm extra salty about it. I wanted nothing more than to toss that little shit bag in a garbage can and leave him.
