LGBT character(s) discussion

So we all know Telltale confirmed LGBT character(s) for TFS, and I was just wondering about your opinions on this, i.e who do you think it will be(if it is one of the already revealed s4 characters), what do you think will Clem's approach to the person be - will she find it okay or as a mentally ill state of mind, do you think it is good they decided to include them, and will their "LGBT-ness" be depicted as something positive or negative?

  • I hope it's Marlon. He looks like the typical good-ol-boy homophobic redneck so I hope it's him just for the juxtaposition. I love juxtaposition.

  • Who cares lol.

I doubt Clementine will have an explicit reaction to their “LGBT-ness.” She never said anything about Walter and Matthew to Kenny as far as we know.

  • That did?

  • As in...?

  • To be fair, she didn't know them for half of an day. It's unlikely that that ever occurred to her.

  • Damn I actually didn't ever think about Walter and Matthew. Was their homosexuality revealed ingame or just on wiki?

  • In game...strongly alluded to.

  • Imma bet a whole cent Louis will be atleast one of the lgbt characters.

  • Who tf cares man it shouldn’t be made a big deal in the final season just like Carly and lee or Luke and Bonnie or Mathew and Walter. It shouldn’t take away from the story or out shine Clem and aj

  • I hope it's marlon, he is already breaking his presumed stereotype by being smart, nice and caring towards clem, not an edgy teen with no feelings like his appearance suggests

    inb4 it's Clem.

I don't really think it matters though. She already found LGBT characters and didn't care. Though those characters didn't make it obvious. Still i don't think she'll care.

  • Eeeh, Clem hasn't realy been exposed to the anti-LGBT people because it's not really a thing to talk about in an apocalypse. She doesn't have any stigmas or prejudical thoughts so it'll kind of be like whatever. Thing is does she know how sex works properly now? jk

  • Why does what you mentioned make you wish he's lgbt?

  • No it's actually a good question. Some people claim that Christa must have taught her, but I think that's absolutely false. "Christa taught her", yet Clem didn't understand what a period is in s3? Maybe it was then Kate who taught her, but I also think she might have just told her that period is normal and explained how to handle it. Would be interesting to see, when they hopefully settle down in the boarding school for a peaceful life, that someone says "hey how about we dont go extinct" and then clem asks "how?" xd jk

Christa hadn't talked to Clem about periods yet because Clem was still just 11 and unlikely to start her period anytime soon. There's a stigma in the US about talking about periods and reproduction, especially with kids so Christa would likely have been putting that talk off as long as possible... then they got separated.

I had the talk with my daughter when she turned 10. Her mother was 10 when she started her period and no one had told her anything so she thought she was dying and had a meltdown and I didn't want that happening to my daughter. Then she didn't start her period until she was 14 lol.

Tbh As long as Clem is not lesbian I don’t care about it that much
But my bet would be Louis

  • my take on it is..what's the point? why go out of your way to make a character sexually orientated just to please everyone? concentrate on the fundamentals,ie getting the game script right and everything will fall into place naturally

  • You know...who cares? Say in the end Clem can have a relationship with a man or a woman or no relationship...as long as it is handled well and not made into a cringfest. Most important thing for me is being able to keep her alive...next to that...LGBT issues are a distant second.

  • "Christa taught her", yet Clem didn't understand what a period is in s3?

Dude, I didn't [fully] understand what a period was until I was legal. How's a girl who was only recently 13 in a zombie apocalypse supposed to know?

Maybe it was then Kate who taught her, but I also think she might have just told her that period is normal and explained how to handle it

At the very least, she showed her how to...whatever you do to counter it.

    Best stance to have, probably.

why go out of your way to make a character sexually orientated just to please anyone?

    Adjusted.

  • Like how I said, which I suppose is the literary/narrative sense. Marlon looks like a good 'ol boy, a redneck, and rednecks are typically homophobic. I live in the south so I have first hand experience. If he himself is gay that'd be a nice contrast to subvert expectations.

Another example is if you've ever played a Fallout game you'll know that almost all super mutants are violent and borderline retarded but occasionally there'll be one that's really intelligent and not hostile. You see a super mutant walking toward you and assume it's another stupid one that you're gonna have to fight but then he starts talking and makes you feel like an idiot because he's so much smarter than you are.

  • It's gonna be Louis. His voice actor was just revealed. Did a little digging on him and he's played gay characters his entire career.

  • I dont care about a character Being LGBT as long as its well written and not something like Curtis from Arrow.

  • Just because a person has played a gay character in the past does not mean they’re automatically going to play a gay character all the time.

  • This has been something I have pondered and mulled over ever since the Q&A last week. It is a very serious issue for some people regarding representation in video games and other forms of media, which is why I have a terrific and well though out philosophy regarding gay characters. This is also my philosophy regarding gay people in real life. And here it is...

I don’t give a flying fuck what your sexuality is.

I don’t care who the LGBT character is, so long as there is more to them other than them being LGBT. They can be gay, straight, bisexual, or whatever they choose, I just don’t want that to be their only defining characteristic. That and the writers don’t try to shove it down the throats of the player to the point where it distracts us from the rest of the game as a whole. Much like in real life, I don’t care about WHAT you are, that means absolutely nothing to me, I care far more about WHO you are. Being gay is not WHO you are, just as being straight is not WHO I am. And to put any sort of emphasis on a character’s sexuality as a reason for liking or disliking them is a ridiculous notion to me.

It’s a philosophy I have dubbed the Mosh Pit Philosophy.

You may laugh at me, hell I wouldn’t blame you, but if you want a place that treats people equally, regardless of what you believe or what you are, look no further than a mosh pit. No one cares if you’re a guy or girl, religious or an atheist, or straight or gay, you will be treated just the same as everyone else who enters the pit, and all that stuff means nothing to us.

  • By ''how about we don't go extinct' do you mean let's have a baby? It will be quite comedic, Clem possibly surviving past 17 and not being educated about all of these things.

  • Could even be Violet. She did give someone a look in that second teaser... ;)

  • Yeah, that was the first(only?) guess.

  • Yeeap. It's pretty obvious. I don't like to think about it though, I'd prefer to stay on track with the story, but we've seen the whole "Clem & Gabe" act. She's gonna meet her knight in shining armor on her second go-around? Telltale can go left this time, I doubt it, but it also isn't ridiculous.

  • Barely existent, shallow, and tacked on.

What very little "act" that was, anyway. Chilling in fact. Nauseating. Cringeworthy. Painful.

  • As long as the character's well written and has a personality outside of being gay, I don't care who it is.

And anyway, I doubt sexuality is all that important when, ya know, the dead are up and walking, and eating people, and in general just tearing apart whatever's left of society. It's all about survival now. Who you wanna screw really isn't of concern.

  • Can a walker be gay? Now that's the question worthy of discussion

  • In regards to this, I think it's a far more touchy subject and you can't please everyone with it. At least to those who have it in their faith that this is wrong, I think telltale should just not do things like this, if I'm being 100% honest, but acknowledge that, as a whole, they accept LGBT people. But like I said, ya can't please everyone, and people will just do whatever to get an LGBT character, so, um, make a fanfic?
