Why do people get sneak attacked by Walkers in the game and show?
People get ambushed and bitten by Walkers in the show and game but why? You'd figure a rotting corpse's stench would alert you that a walker is near, but apparently not. ramble post

Pretty sure that after a decade of smelling nothing but death and unwashed bodies, your nose will just block those smells out.
Even if you don't shower after a hot summer day, you won't smell your own disgusting sweaty smell the next morning. I don't, at least.
Though it still doesn't make sense that walkers are able to ambush people, because all of them constantly growl and gurgle, unless it's the one jumpscaring you.
I still don't understand if Walkers sleep or not.
Like, what was that one doing who attacked Lee? He seemed to be taking a nap under a random bit of cardboard
The comic series kinda give an explanation for this. Basically, if a zombie dies far out of the way from people/sounds (in some random back alley, for example) or otherwise dies with an incapacitating injury (losing a leg, breaking an arm, etc), they tend to stay in one spot and effectively 'play dead' until something gets close enough to them. The survivors in the comics make note of this behavior, and specifically refer to these particular zombies as lurkers.
So no, they don't sleep exactly... but some of them do go dormant and stay in one place until something comes to them, instead of wandering around aimlessly. Season 2 of the game somewhat touches on this in episode 4, with Jane stabbing every "dead" walker she comes across, just to be safe.
