i was kinda in the same place. i hadn't played s2 or ANF until like a month or so before TFS came out. only because i liked how s1 ended with clem's fate being unknown.
but with her story ending, i decided to play the other ones. s2 and ANF were both great. only thing that really bothered me about ANF is how much clem's personality changed without any real explanation why. and how i kept refusing to join new frontier but somehow she ended up joining a group that brands its members like cattle. wtf, clem.
Pretty much what everyone said, A New Frontier was not the best Walking Dead title when compared to Season One and Season Two but I would recommend playing it and allow yourself to come to the conclusion of whether or not you like it as well as having the knowledge of how Clementine's story progressed from the end of A New Frontier to the beginning of The Final Season. If you do decide to play it I hope you enjoy it
I don't get all the hate for the New Frontier. Yes it was nowhere near as good as the first two seasons but it was still enjoyable. Telltale tried something new and it didn't work out. Its clear from the first episode of season 4 that they have realized their mistakes and done things differently, so cut them some slack.

Well season 3 was bad. But if you want to play this season with your choices you made in the previous seasons you'll need to buy the 3rd season in order to import your choices.
Season 2 wasn’t exceptional but it was way better than 3, i am amazed you and some others think that but whatever. ANF just wasn’t even a game to me given the fact there
was virtually no gameplay after episode 2
I mean, TFS is shaping up to be great. Personally I don't ANF is as bad as most people say it is. I thought it improved upon what Season 2 d… moreid really bad most of the time. Is it skippable? Yeah, it is, but it has its moments where it is cool.

Lol not really. Why? Because there really was no sense of connection between the brothers. I didn’t feel any attachment to any characters from that game because Telltale failed give us that. Not like the connection we had between Lee and Clem
its trash, that gay ass David "i love u scene" was and pretty cool tho,the only thing i can remember about ANF that was any good, apart from some flashbacks
The Final Season is easily the best Walking Dead content we have gotten in a long time. If Telltale keeps up this level of quality throughout the next 3 episodes this season could rival Season 1.
Seems you've already gotten a pretty broad array of answers here. But I suppose I'll add mine to the pile:
If you weren't the biggest fan of S2, then as some people have already said, the third season likely isn't going to be much better for you. A fair amount of the specific problems you had aren't exactly addressed (namely episode length and lack of hub areas). I'm one of the rare few here that doesn't completely hate S3 and still found it moderately enjoyable, but I still can't deny that it's the weakest of the seasons thus far, for various reasons.
That being said though, I still think you should give it a fair shot. I'd try to snag it if it's on sale, or maybe watch a few minutes of it on youtube or something, to get an idea of what you'd be getting. I'm someone that believes you should always give something a fair chance, even if everybody around you constantly gives it crap. You should at least check out an episode, get it on sale or something like that, rather than completely skipping it just because of what people say. If you don't mind me spouting my own personal wisdom here: your opinion on something should ultimately be your own. Allowing your opinion to be shaped by other people's thoughts and feelings is fine, but don't let them make your opinion for you completely.
well, not because of the characters, the scene itself, the music and shit,i didnt say it was some Lee level shit,i just said, and especially compared to the rest of ANF,was pretty cool, pretty much the only thing i remember about ANF

Oh that’s fine don’t worry I wasn’t slamming your opinion. I get what you’re saying to be honest, i guess for me i hated the game so much that by episode 5 i had lost all interest in it and was just trying to complete it as quickly as possible

I personally couldn't continue playing ANF after Clem's first flashback, that and the lies told about it, the sloppy story and characters (Marianna was literally the only character I liked) and the terrible handling if Clem and her choices all made it hard to continue for me.
There are more problems too, lack of conversations, way too many observations for Javi to make on literal trash, many plot holes and honestly not the best graphics, choices from what I've seen were still not much of an improvement either.
The Final Season however is so far everything I've been wanting from Telltale and more!

If you went alone at the end of Season 2, then SKIP A NEW FRONTIER. Don't waste your money on that garbage. A New Frontier (I refuse to call it what they want me to call) is another example of worst sequels in great franchises like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5, Outlast 2, Dead Rising 4, Metal Gear Survive etc. If you stayed with Kenny/Jane/Wellington, then just watch the flashbacks on youtube to see what happened to them, none of them will affect The Final Season though.
Telltale said there were 42 different variations of Clem that players have crafted across the 2 seasons, but we never really see them
lmaooo yup, that sounds like classic telltale. thanks for all the detailed responses dude, i really appreciate it. i think i'm gonna try playing s3 though, despite all ppl here telling me not to do it. i already have the game and i wanna judge it for myself. the game plan is to play through the first ep and then see if i feel like continuing
if it totally butchers clem's character then i really don't wanna play it. can you develop on what you mean by disservice?
Her entir… moree inclusion of the game is inconsequential and pointless. Seriously, if you remove her, nothing of importance is lost and nothing would change. I'm a big time fan of Clem (look at my Gravatar, it's Clementine wearing a Metallica shirt, she's my favorite character in all of fiction), but I have no problem in saying the game might have actually been better had the writers decided to not put her in the game at all. She's relegated to a side character that season, if that, and her character really doesn't go through any arc, and if it did, it ends without a concrete conclusion to the point where you can jump right into TFS and nothing of value would be lost. They essentially turned the face of the franchise into a cheap marketing ploy to give the game some legitimacy among fans. Basically, Telltale said "Look… [view original content]

The Lies
If you can't promise anything, then you should never make any promises. Telltale told us a lot of lies before the release of this game, given the fact that it had some many rewrites. For example:
Season 2 Endings will have a big impact on Season 3 (July 2014).
Episode 1 is split in 2 parts because the length is too big. Looking at The Final Season Episode 1
Clementine is on a revenge quest.
There are 42 versions of Clementine through this season. Other than a few dialogue changes, Clementine is the same person in everyone's game.
This is Clementine and Javier's story (E3 2016)
Clementine is a co-playable character. Playable in flashbacks only never equals co-playable, hell, she doesn't even have any hub explorations, there are just dialogues and QTEs.
No one will take a backseat.
This is going to be the biggest season we have done so far. Makes 4 episodes only, splits the premiere in 2 parts and the length for each episode is just one hour and a few minutes. Seems logic
Clementine
Clementine had NO reason to be in this season at all because it was Javier's story, not hers. Hell, she didn't even accomplish her objective (Finding AJ), all she did was be there so this game can attract the old fans. If they removed her from the game, the story would have been the same. This game should have never been called Season 3 if you don't have the main character from the previous seasons as the main protagonist. Most of the players who bought it are old fans, there are BARELY any new players to the franchise. This is one of the story-driven franchises you should play from start to finish. Clementine wasn't even playable in Episode 5, what was the REASON of cutting off the flashback with her and her babysitter, Sandra?
Romance
This makes Kate Garcia one of the worst TWD characters of all time. She never shuts up about cheating on David and marry Javier. She should have told her husband from the beginning that she didn't want to be with him anymore, this stupid decision caused David to put all the blame on his brother and kill him over jealously, no matter how much of a nice brother you were to him.
Short length
Given the fact that they said it was going to be the biggest season, this is the shortest Telltale game ever made, even shorter than Telltale's Jurassic Park.
Less story, more action
There a lot of zombie killing simulators (Left 4 Dead, Dead Island, Dying Light, Dead Rising, Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare) but The Walking Dead was never something that should be part of the gang. The lack of hub explorations and character development is what ruined this season. Nobody asked for a game that is playable in QTEs only. There is no one in this game that I should give a shit about because I barely even remember them. The only good characters that I can think of is Javier (Because he is the PC and has a lot of funny moments) and Mariana (She is the only character we have got to talk to very much even if it was just one episode and is, of course, the first main character to die because who gives a shit about characters? We always needed action in zombie games over the story). David used to be my favorite character, until Episode 5 which was surprisingly the worst episode ever existed in a Telltale game and it didn't even have a lot of writers.

Yeah, one major thing i hated about ANF is how they totally ruined Clem’s character. I spent 2 seasons making sure she remembered what Lee taught her, i played as nice Lee and nice Clem and then by Season 3/ANF she’s just awful. Thankfully there is at least some feeling that the old Clem is back in Season 4 though
ironically clem was added in ANF to make old fans interested in it,to make people like it,but her inclusion and what they did to her character actually ended up bein one of the main reasons people hated it
of course that aint the only problem with ANF
but i remember when clem told Javier "im not as nice as u,i wont hesitate" and i just started laughin and shit,i was like "bitch, shut the fuck up, i kno u,i kno that aint true" i wish there was an option to say that,it wouldnt make sense since Javier doesnt rly kno her,but some of the other options dont make sense either they are almost like he does know her as well as the player, but he doesnt, theres the option to "kiss clems ass and act like u know her since she was 8 but u dont know her but the player does so do it anyway" ,tho throughout the game

well, it's been a while but i'm back (from the gallows) and y'all, i gotta say... it really wasn't that bad? i liked it actually. it might have to do with the fact that i went into it with basically zero expectations, which allowed me to enjoy the story for what it was and not for what i wanted it to be. the fact that i didn't have several months between the episodes to analyze and nitpick every part of the story most definitely had a lot to do with it as well, it saved me from knowing about character inconsistencies and kept the illusion of choice™ intact. there was some obvious problems and wasted potential in it, but i was still able to enjoy the finished product. this is a bit of a hot take, but i actually felt like anf was more thematically and narratively consistent than s2 (which isn't rly saying much lol, but still).
i (admittedly) wasn't as emotionally invested in the characters as i was in s1 and s2, but i still liked a lot of them (homeboy javi could charm me any day of the week). the only characters i can think of that had a character send off that was on a s2-level of awful was ava/tripp (ava falling of that cliff had me laughing my ass off btw, i liked her but goddamn). gabe felt like a more successful attempt at a ben-type of character, in that he could be annoying but he still had moments that endeared me to him. i also appreciated the flashbacks to the pre-za lives of the garcias, it helped establish the characters and their motivations. i was rly surprised when i looked up alternative endings on yt and i saw all these ppl jerking it to david and calling kate a "cheating slut", it didn't feel like we played the same game.
i have to agree with some of the criticism directed at s3 clem though. i had to replay the game from ep 3 to get the ending i wanted (that whole thing was complete bullshit btw, like i appreciated that telltale stepped up and made some choices actually matter, but the way they pulled it off made absolutely no sense. the fact that some choice clem made in a flashback determined her decision-making in a situation completely different was just nonsensical and the fact that the fate of the main supporting characters relied on it was plain upsetting. just felt like a contrived way to make multiple endings possible), which gave me the opportunity to examine her character more in depth. some of her jadedness felt believable (esp in my playthrough as she went alone at the end of s2) but a good chunk of her decisions and actions just didn't fit the way i had raised her and played her in previous seasons. not letting david in when he was banging on the door and being mad at my javier for not killing lingard are just some examples of scenes that had me going "i didn't raise you like this!" lmao. they should've taken previous seasons and player choices into account when writing her, made her character less rigid and more choice-dependant. the way she acted in my first example (not letting david in) totally seems like smth kenny would do, and it would've made more sense for her to act like that if you had lived with kenny for two years. so yeah, telltale were lazy which led her to feel a bit one-dimensional, but i still wouldn't claim it completely ruined her character. it can be explained away with some imaginative thinking.
but yeah, anyway. i can't sit here and pretend that i didn't like the game and that i wasn't invested in it when i replayed the majority of it just to keep kate alive lol. i don't feel nearly as emotionally spent when i finished it as i did at the end of s1 and s2 though, but that has a lot to do with the fact that the ending of s3 wasn't nearly as tragic as the ones before it. i'm real happy that javi, kate and gabe were alive at the end of it, even though they're probably gonna be dead at the beginning of s4 lol. also i know that he was written to be likeable but... jesus? lord knows i'd smash

Oh dear! Well good luck with that. I’ll be impressed if you manage to finish it. It really is a terrible game, if i can even call it a “game”
well ANF its short,I’ll be impressed if he doesnt hate/wanna kill Clem after playing it tho
If you like it, fine, I can’t stop you and that’s up to you. But don’t go around saying how you can’t stand people having a different opinion than you.
It's not that I can't stand different opinions its just that like I have never seen someone say anything good about that game and it kinda upsets me
That's why it's called minority.
what upsets me is that i've heard some people say good things about it
I’ve stated two or three times in this thread that I like ANF.
Javier is my favorite playable character of the series. I like Kate and Gabe too.
Couldn’t agree more with you! Like in that scene where
Clem accidentally shoots that guy and she asks/tells Javier to lie for her>!
or something i recall and i said to myself, that isn’t who Clementine is! What the fuck?
well, it's been a while but i'm back (from the gallows) and y'all, i gotta say... it really wasn't that bad? i liked it actually. it might have to do with the fact that i went into it with basically zero expectations, which allowed me to enjoy the story for what it was and not for what i wanted it to be. the fact that i didn't have several months between the episodes to analyze and nitpick every part of the story most definitely had a lot to do with it as well, it saved me from knowing about character inconsistencies and kept the illusion of choice™ intact. there was some obvious problems and wasted potential in it, but i was still able to enjoy the finished product. this is a bit of a hot take, but i actually felt like anf was more thematically and narratively consistent than s2 (which isn't rly saying much lol, but still).
i (admittedly) wasn't as emotionally invested in the characters as i was in s1 and s2, but i still liked a lot of them (homeboy javi could charm me any day of the week). the only characters i can think of that had a character send off that was on a s2-level of awful was ava/tripp (ava falling of that cliff had me laughing my ass off btw, i liked her but goddamn). gabe felt like a more successful attempt at a ben-type of character, in that he could be annoying but he still had moments that endeared me to him. i also appreciated the flashbacks to the pre-za lives of the garcias, it helped establish the characters and their motivations. i was rly surprised when i looked up alternative endings on yt and i saw all these ppl jerking it to david and calling kate a "cheating slut", it didn't feel like we played the same game.
i have to agree with some of the criticism directed at s3 clem though. i had to replay the game from ep 3 to get the ending i wanted (that whole thing was complete bullshit btw, like i appreciated that telltale stepped up and made some choices actually matter, but the way they pulled it off made absolutely no sense. the fact that some choice clem made in a flashback determined her decision-making in a situation completely different was just nonsensical and the fact that the fate of the main supporting characters relied on it was plain upsetting. just felt like a contrived way to make multiple endings possible), which gave me the opportunity to examine her character more in depth. some of her jadedness felt believable (esp in my playthrough as she went alone at the end of s2) but a good chunk of her decisions and actions just didn't fit the way i had raised her and played her in previous seasons. not letting david in when he was banging on the door and being mad at my javier for not killing lingard are just some examples of scenes that had me going "i didn't raise you like this!" lmao. they should've taken previous seasons and player choices into account when writing her, made her character less rigid and more choice-dependant. the way she acted in my first example (not letting david in) totally seems like smth kenny would do, and it would've made more sense for her to act like that if you had lived with kenny for two years. so yeah, telltale were lazy which led her to feel a bit one-dimensional, but i still wouldn't claim it completely ruined her character. it can be explained away with some imaginative thinking.
but yeah, anyway. i can't sit here and pretend that i didn't like the game and that i wasn't invested in it when i replayed the majority of it just to keep kate alive lol. i don't feel nearly as emotionally spent when i finished it as i did at the end of s1 and s2 though, but that has a lot to do with the fact that the ending of s3 wasn't nearly as tragic as the ones before it. i'm real happy that javi, kate and gabe were alive at the end of it, even though they're probably gonna be dead at the beginning of s4 lol. also i know that he was written to be likeable but... jesus? lord knows i'd smash
Yeah, about that. I guess this isn't really a spoiler, but it has already been confirmed that Javi will not appear in TFS.
Yea go for it play season 3 and 4. Season 3 ties a connection with ending of season 2 and such but go for it.
...do you mean he won't appear bc it's revealed he's dead or bc the game leaves his fate unknown? or wait, don't answer that. i'm booting up s4 as we speak
