The Final Season NOT officially cancelled (YET) - Mike Futter discussing its future w/ Telltale CEO

edited September 2018 in The Walking Dead

Check this guy's tweet and written history. The official CEO even tweeted at him directly on twitter. So far, according to him, there has been no official cancellation. The status of the series appears to be 'undetermined'. Hold tight guys.

edit:

For those interested, the same reporter suggested that the company kept hiring people because they did not expect shutdown. He speculated they may have missed a critical milestone that triggered a contract cancelation. This led to a sudden lack of necessary funding and mass layoffs were a result. This is unconfirmed, but is a solid scenario that would explain the circumstances.

MAJOR UPDATE

Articles stating that Telltale has gone bankrupt are FALSE. According to the reporter in direct contact with the CEO, they have NOT filed for bankruptcy. The journalists that said so are misinformed.

There may be more options for Telltale than we thought.

The Walking Dead has had determinant characters and now IT IS A determinant character

  • I need to know what is happening....DUDE IM LOOSING MY MIND HERE!

  • OMFG... the worst weekand of this year, just sitting waiting for news. It has all come down to shit so quickly. All those people lost their jobs and we might as well got left in a dirt with TFS left unfinished. I trully hope that's not the case tho but hope dwindles with time.

  • If given to the right studio, I'd be all for a transfer of Telltales products.

I'm praying for the chance of they finishing the game using what they already have for episode 3. I don't know man, I'll accept anything at this point.

  • Hopefully this determinant character lasts long...

  • Starting to think a lot of people are just in the bargaining stage of grief at the moment, though if the series can be completed properly I am all for it.

  • hold tight, and don't let a walker bite

  • I think they should give to Xbox or some company to help it. I mean will anybody be ok if Xbox/Microsoft buys out Telltale? I mean I might let it happen. The downside is Xbox is probably going to make exclusive.

  • https://mobile.twitter.com/Futterish/status/1043497721959784448 so in a way we have to pray for some company(Xbox pls save it)to transfer the Telltale games into a new company. I hope somebody is negotiating with them.

  • And if they try.....

  • Again, don’t confirm anything but I’m 90% sure TFS is done after Episode 2.

  • Microsoft did buy Mojang if I can recall, and that didn't stop Minecraft from being launched on the PS4 and the Switch. There's hope...

  • Yeah I'm convinced Ep3 & 4 arent happening, but unfortunately Telltale has not said anything yet and the CEO does seem to be looking at options. Have absolutely no idea what those options could be, considering the reporter said chances of the company being bought are slim at best.

  • Maybe if Telltale hires a temporary team to finish with episode 3&4 and the company that buys them will transfer the games on to the new company who buys them? I think we have to wait and probably they are negotiating right now with some company.

  • I think Sony would be better if we’re talking exclusives. No other console group puts as much attention and care into making numerous quality single player driven games than they do. But I would rather avoid TT being exclusive at all.

  • What does she mean “with who?” If a different set of developers took over and had access to all of the assets, script, and engine they could finish the season. It probably wouldn’t be as good as it was planned to be but at least it’s something.

  • Nooo, no "exclusive" talk. We paid for the season pass and we are from the 3 platforms. They will have to deal with it.

  • So there is hope. Like, I would have liked to see some of the other games Telltale made after this, but they can't finish right in the middle of their final season. If they finish this game off and do it right, I think Telltale's going wouldn't hurt nearly as much.

Hires a temporary team? With what money? Sorry if this sounds ignorant. I don't know much about business. But how could a bankrupt company just hire another team like that to finish the game without external funding from a generous company that is willing to lose money?

Edit: according to the reporter, Telltale is not bankrupt. I guess they DO have options.

  • I guess TTG just had to pay MS to use the license then? Different if MS buys TTG outright.

I guess the real question is there any MS owned games on playstation? I honestly don't know. I know it would come out for PC and Xbox but I bet they would make an exception for THIS and also release on playstaion.

THis is all BS talk though. It isn't going to happen. Just hope there is somehow a way they get 3 and 4 out and they aren't also total dogcrap.

  • This other set of developers you speak of wouldn't do it for free and Telltale clearly doesn't have the money to pay a team anymore.

  • Yup. Pretty much this.

How can they afford a new dev team if they’re going bankrupt?

Sorry guys, but TFS won’t make it.

  • Reading over the tweets by Mike Futter again, I'm not sure how likely a transfer of license will be.

It appears to be rather costly just for the initial licensing, royalties, etc. And if the final season isn't performing well sales wise, I find it unlikely another studio especially a larger one would want to pick it up.

  • Source please. But that’s an improvement if true.

  • I agree that it is reasonable to expect a cancellation. This was just to notify about false headlines stating "The Final Season cancelled" when the CEO is apparently exploring possible options, and Telltale has not actually filed for bankruptcy.
