Walking Dead doesn't start in Windows 8 (Steam version)

Walking Dead, Steam version, doesn't start in Windows 8 Professional. I read a post where unpluggin a Xbox 360 controller would help - which it did - but I want to play it with the controller. It worked like a charm in Windows 7.

I did it yesterday! Just downloaded "dinput8.dll" and put it on the "GameData" folder. On your case, D:\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\GameData

Check this out and see if it helps:
    http://www.articlewritingclicks.com/Dll_Errors/Dinput8dll_Error__What_Causes_it_and_How_to_Fix_it.html

Basically says to update display drivers (there are specific ones for Windows 8 if you just upgraded and didn't know).

Also to refresh your directx installation if that doesn't work

    Hope this helps.

    Whoa.

    There's a Windows 8?
  • edited August 2012
Steam doesn't work very well on Windows 8 period. Plus, I didn't even know windows 8 was released to the public yet, only illegal copies and beta. How did you get into beta?
  • edited August 2012
Beta is open, and certain businesses.
  • edited August 2012
If I would've known that, I would've gotten it ages ago. Thanks.
  • edited August 2012
Open as in available. Not as in anyone can download. I believe there was a a signup process. I know my job already has it.

Thank you! This did the trick, but I put it directly under "steamapps\common\the walking dead\" since the .exe file was there.

Thank you for replying. I don't seem to have any problems with Steam. All other games work just fine. I resolved the problem with the help from another reply. (I assure you my copy is perfectly legal).

Windows 8 pro has been officially released for some people. I'm using it myself cause I'm a student.

    Directly from wikipedia:

On August 15, 2012, Windows 8 was made available to download for MSDN, TechNet and DreamSpark subscribers.[24] [25] Windows 8 was made available to Software Assurance customers on August 16, 2012.[26] Windows 8 was made available for student downloads (with a DreamSpark Premium subscription) on August 22, 2012, earlier than advertised.[25]

Public release will be in october.

And thanks Khorino for the tip, works like a charm!

    Thanks Khorino!

I too am running the Windows8 Pro from TechNet and I can confirm that it stops the bizarre 'controller plugged in = fail' scenario.

However (I'm using the non-steam) and the controller isn't actually being seen by the game.... More digging required...

Same problem here, and installing the DLL linked above allows the game to load, but so did disconnecting my Xbox 360 controller. (actually, I just turned it off, as itʼs wireless)

While it lets the game load, the game isnʼt detecting that there is a controller plugged in at all and mouse movement is really sluggish, like thereʼs half a second delay on everything. (game is running at 60fps though)

I tried pulling the DINPUT8.dll from my old Windows 7 backup, but that doesn't work, the game starts crashing again.

After being without my PC for a month waiting on parts being RMAed, and having not played Episode 3 yet, this really sucks. :(

Windows 8 is already available to anyone with MSDN/Technet, there is a 90 Day Evaluation that is available to anyone with a Live ID (i.e. anyone) and it will be available for purchase in four weeks time…

Update: this older DINPUT8.dll lets the controller work!
Edit: Or not. The d-pad and buttons work in the menus, but the sticks do nothing once you get in the game. :(

Update 2: After going through a number of them, This is the DINPUT8.dll you want. (Windows 7 RTM, rather than the fully patched-up Windows 7 I pulled the DLL from initially) Seems to be working as expected.

4/27 Update: READ ME Better link to DINPUT8.dll

In Windows 8 if you want to use your gamepad in a TTG engine game you either can't or you have to get a dll from shady websites. I went through the effort to get this directly from the windows 7 SP1 disc to make sure there was no way it could have a virus, etc. Below is the zip I made.

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/z7sqsq

I checked the dinput8.dll file's hash against virustotal and it is clean:
    https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/c6e7419ea72d1703f72292743a999f4a6cf0c6734ba1ee92c6af18ba8b1a3a23/analysis/1310327516/

    I hashed it using: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/hash_my_files.html

    <Tech Details>
This file is the 32bit Dinput8.dll that shipped with Windows 7 RTM
When it is placed in the same directory as the EXE in question it will override the system level dll of the same name.

Somewhere in the TTG engine there is a possible incompatibility with the Windows 8 version, either their fault or Microsoft's. This fault causes their games to crash when it detects a controller is attached and it tries to use it. The Windows 7 version does not have this problem.
    </Tech Details>

This has fixed every instance of errors I have had in TTG games that have an event like the following.
Faulting application name: PokerNight2.exe, version: 2013.4.24.22527, time stamp: 0x51788caf

    Thanks,

    OLD BELOW
First I want to thank you for this thread.

I was trying to launch Sam and Max Season 3 and it just would instantly crash (previous seasons worked fine). I completely forgot I had my Xbox 360 controller attached. Removing it fixed the issue and it launched properly.

I am running Windows 8 RTM Build 6.2.9200.

I am going to try to see if the dll in the folder lets me use the controller. I will edit with my findings.

EDIT: I followed WhyYouNoWork's advice and downloaded the Windows 7 RTM DINPUT8.dll (6.1.7600.16385) and put it in the directory with the SamMax301.exe this allows it to launch with the controller connected. Without this dll in there and the controller connected it crashes.
Be careful on the topdll site it is on the shady side, don't allow it to scan for errors, but the dll is clean from what NOD32 tells me.

This fixed worked for me as well. I am running Win8 Pro.

TellTale apparently has 0 QA and if they do have QA it's probably 1 or 2 people overloaded with so many other problems that simple things like testing on the new OS MS is releasing to see if the game even launches isn't even on their radar.

It's sad. Basic testing could relieve almost all of the problems in the Walking Dead and then FREE PATCHING ON THE PC could resolve long standing issues. But that just doesn't appear to be a priority.

No wonder customers had to buy the whole season on the PC rather than each episode.
  • edited November 2012
I'm still confused on how to work the fix. Could someone break it down really simply for me?
  • edited November 2012
I had the same issue after switching to Win 8, and after trying every compatibility tweak I had read about, the only thing that worked for me was unplugging my gamepad (even though it's not a 360-type of gamepad). After that the game launched, not fullscreen, but it launched at least.
Of course, there's the matter of losing of all my saves though...
  • edited November 2012
@el_badman, follow this this post to get back your saves.
    It worked for me!

I'm not using a controller, and the game still doesn't work. A little window comes up and it seems to be running fine, but when I click the button that says "Click to Continue" the window simply closes and nothing happens.

    WAT DO

Didn't work for me. I could launch, but not use my controller. However I have both a 360 controller and a Hydra. Once I disconnected the Hydra, the 360 controller works. Moral of the story is, you can probably only have one controller connected for this to work.
  • edited July 2013
Thanks for mentioning the Hydra Pirateguybrush. I had mine still plugged in, but I had even turned off the program for my Razer Hydra.

Unplugging it worked to get Walking Dead to play for me, apparently in windowed mode, in Windows 8.
  • I joined the forum just to say THANK YOU for putting this solution to virtual paper!

It was infuriating not being able to start the game without un-plugging my controller every time, and then it not recognise it to use it once it was running; THANKS X 10000!!!

    :D

Update: this older DINPUT8.dll lets the controller work! Edit: Or not. The d-pad and buttons work in the menus, but the sticks do nothing onc

Hey guys. I tried every single one of the possible solutions that I found on the web. The only way I was finally able to fix the crashing issue, controller issue, and game not starting, was to copy the dinput8.dll from my Windows 8 64-bit system folder into the Walking Dead folder under steamapps common. I can't remember if it was the DLL from the SYSWOW64 folder or the normal system32 folder, because I tried them both and don't remember in which order. However, one of them did work and I was able to play with no further issues!

Hope this helps someone. It's definitely a time-consuming headache trying to track down the problem! :-)

  • IM going with Balisong on this one

first even valve has stated steam has issues, (like MOST things do ) with windows 8
not sure why microsoft did this but win 8... damaged goods. And I hold a masters as a NT, so I know the reasons behind all of it
future updates to this os do intend to fix LOTS of things but in my honest opinion, it should not have been released so soon after the win 7 flunk
though id recommend downgrading to win 7 hell even xp unless some games require the new os
(only seen 2 games that recommend win 7 or higher)

take GTA series for example, rockstar commented in posts and in phone calls that win8 is just terrible and to them they recommend downgrading
ever since I did, 90% of things work for me on win 7 64 bit
    vs win8

valve has indeed stated their cloud has issues on some (MANY) win 8 machines
uplay ubisofts cloud also listed the same issues with sync and compat
as well as other clouds ill not mention

MAU which post solved the issue im curious
    the moving the dinput file?

its been tried by many and still doesnt work, good to know if it did work for someone so I can suggest this option to future people with issues on steam and here

I apologize for the inconvenience. Below are a few possible solutions:

    1) Ensure you have the latest drivers

    2) Restart your system

    3) Unplug your gamepad (and all other USB devices other than keyboard/mouse)

    4) Verify your cache if you purchased through Steam (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2037-QEUH-3335)

    5) Run the game as admin

    6) Run the game in compatibility mode (We recommend Windows 98/ME)

    7) Reinstall the game

    8) Make sure that the Steam application is not set to a compatibility mode (right click on steam and click properties, then check compatibility, and make sure that it is not checked to play in a different OS)

If this does not resolve your issue, please read this Sticky on how to run our Support Tool, and follow the steps to run the tool, and reply to this email with the download link copied and pasted into this reply. You can find the Sticky here:
