Flotham Island Overhead Map music! (My Version.)

Michael Land's best music is from the overhead map's but TOMI didn't have a song for Flotsam so I did my own. Secretly I'd love to someday have one of my song's in a MI game but my chances are slim.

This ended up sounding more like what Clint or Peter would have written for EMI. It's not quite up to their level imo so don't be harsh. If it was as good as Michael Land I'd be making music professionally. :)

Flotsam Island MP3 of it (sounds way better)

EDIT: Don't forget to watch the ending. I put a cool little piece in.

Not bad! I prefer Land's rendition, though. But you definitely have a nice sound here. I'd love to hear more work from you.

    Heh, Thanks!

I was by no means trying to even compare to him. I know he has more talent. He went to Harvard, I believe?

Great music. Nice adaptation to the theme.

Just wondering if the starting might be a tad too soft, getting drown out by the swirling wind sound later in the game.
  • edited July 2009
Ya, you might be right. I think it's too late to re-upload it though. MusicallyInspired, I do have one other song on there if you wanted to hear it. It's in the "quick list" thingy on the right.

    Love it! Well done.

I really liked it. The main drawback of Land's Flotsam theme is that it ends like, after 20 seconds? And then wind, wind, wind...

Nice little jingle, keep it up. :)

I just relized that I spelled Flotsam wrong... Thanks for the compliments though guys. I appreciate it.

I'll upload an Mp3 of it later if anyone wants it. The youtube video took a little clarity out of it.

This sounds really nice, I hadn't noticed there wasn't any music on the Flotsam overview! Would love to have an mp3 of this. ;)
  • edited July 2009
Not bad. What did you use to make it?
  • edited July 2009
I used VSTS. Or Virtual sounds.

Native Instruments: Kontakt 3 and Miroslav: Philharmonik I think they around $300 or $400 each. Can't remember. I use both in Sonar 7 pro. Which I think was $700 at the time I bought it. I didn't pirate any of these. I bought them. I also have an M-Audio 88 hammer Key controller.

Thanks for the compliment Ravey! I'd be glad to upload an Mp3 tonight when I'm off work.

Did I detect a little Phatt Island in there?

Reminds me a little of it...the end sounds like Herman Toothrot's theme from MI2.
  • edited July 2009
Any resemblence to those songs would be simply coincidental. :)

I uploaded the mp3 now of the song. It sounds a lot better without going through youtube. Opinions are always welcome!

Thanks a lot man! Does it sound too quiet by chance? I was thinking it might.

Yeah, it's kinda quiet compared with most of the stuff released on CD nowadays - you can thank the loudness wars for that.

A nice way of checking the overall volume of an MP3 is using MP3Gain which analyses an MP3 (or a group of them), calculates an average volume and even allows you to losslessly adjust the volume, within reason.

I use it to keep the MP3s of all my CDs at around the same volume (89dB, which is the MP3Gain default), and it works nicely. Of course I wince every time a new album is listed at needing -12dB adjustment, which usually means the dynamics are completely shot to hell... :(

(FYI: Your track would have been given a +4.5 dB boost...)

    Thanks Steve and leak.

MP3Gain is exactly what I needed. That will be very useful! Thanks you. And Linz is a beautiful place BTW. My sister lived their for a couple years.

btw, speaking of native instruments, I'm installing komplete 5 right now, didn't realise it would take 6 hours! lol

Komplete 5 came out after I got Kontakt 3. I believe it's included with Komplete. I'm not sure I'd pay over $1200 for somthing i'd only use half of. Still a great synth/station! You did pay for it, right?

Of course I paid for it, I pay for all my music software. There is a deal on at the moment so I got this for 399 Euros, which is a steal even if Komplete 6 will come soon.

Hey, it took me even longer yesterday since my drive had a hard time reading Kontakt 3 Disc B... :(

At least ImgBurn was able to read it without errors in ~50 minutes... :D

I wonder if NI's Kompletely Insane Offer was involved here - and yes, I paid 399 EUR for it since they didn't offer an upgrade from Komplete 2 to 5 anymore... thank $DEITY for special offers; and yeah, upgrading from 5 to 6 when it's released should still be cheaper with this... :)

It is a great deal, after hearing the OP's work using some of NI's stuff I wanted it to install ever faster :)

I'm actually kinda torn between toying around in Cubase 5 with it and playing Street Fighter 4 - my 2 weeks of vacation starting the week after next can't come soon enough as I'm usually too zoned out after a day of coding to do anything too creative, so it's probably going to be mostly Street Fighter 4 et al. :)

Whichever makes you feel more in holiday mode - sitting in front of a blank sequencer soft can sometimes be not that much fun.

    Enjoy! :)

Yeah, I've been living here all my life (i.e. 32 years) and I still like it - though this year's "cultural capital of Europe" status is a bit much sometimes, and my department (though, thankfully, not me personally) has to keep the website for it up and running.

Me, I'm just the codemonkey for our general hospital's intranet applications... :D

Steve, I didn't mean to sound like I did. I just happen to run into a lot of pathetic people (mainly kids) who have stolen these fine programs.

Do either of you have any samples of your work? I'd love to hear some samples. What other Vst's/synth's do you use?
  • edited July 2009
Lovely piece of music there, I'm very impressed with the quality.

You could have quite easily fooled me into thinking that was a piece by Michael Land. You could have tricked me into thinking that for some reason a piece of music was missing when I downloaded and installed my episode. Very well done! :)

Actually, I've not used Cubase and/or Komplete for a few years, but recently I've got bitten by the music bug again while I was using Cubase to create a 7 hour music mix for a friend of mine who I thought could use a bit of introduction to all kinds of music... :)

So the first thing I did was update from Cubase 3 and Komplete 2 to recent versions and also buy a Kore controller. And to be honest, the last music I would have dared to release was made in Buzz almost a decade ago...

The ultimate insu.. err, Compliment. Thank you.

Leak, what do you mean "dare to"? You've got a great setup there. I'm sure you could come up with some good music. European's are naturally gifted musician's.

Heh. Nah, "dare to" just means I lost interest in making music around the point where I was both studying computer science and working part-time soon after I went from Logic Audio Silver (thanks to Apple dropping the PC line) + Reaktor 3 to Cubase and Komplete 2, so I didn't really finish anything. :o

Very nice musical piece. I would really like to know how to add rhythm to my compositions. I just don't have the ear for it... I can dance on rhythm, play on rhythm...but I can't do "drums in background". Weird, huh?
Any suggestions? Would it be called "cheating" if I would download different loopable rhythms and use them in my songs, then call my songs "original"? :D

Well, you could try tapping/clapping/stomping/etc. along to the music, recording that with a microphone then using it as a basis for putting together a rhythm pattern in whatever sequencer et al you have... :)

You didn't sound bad and yes I understand, lots of crackers using sequencers and whatnot. Sadly I don't have any music to share, seem to spend my whole life trying to learn how to use these applications and never getting anywhere. I'm running logic with a duet (which is giving me interference issues) off a macbook pro. I'm a guitarist so this might explain why I struggle with all the modern computer stuff lol. Vsts I have are bfd2, komplete5, stylus rms, logic 8 pro, ableton live 6 and I just grabbed the psp nitro for 10$ deal from audiomidi.com.. nice! (hope I use it). I have 6 very nice guitars, some nice mics and there is no excuse now!! Just get lazy..

Yes, Silver. Using loops is cheating. :) I know a few people who disagree but they themselves are not musicians. Percussion is the hardest part for me. All I can tell you is to 1. Read about time signatures and learn them. 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4 and 7/4 are basic starting points that can help you recognize rythem. 2. Listen to many types of songs in the style of rythm you are attempting to compose to. It will help your creativity a ton. Thats about all I can tell you for now.

Steve, You have BFD2!. I really want to get it. How is it in your opinion?

    I love it! CMI style!

And I have to admit that this is better than the original one, I'm not joking.
