Season 2 choices that actually mattered?

  • The issue in this game was that no matter how you treat the characters in the game, they will never change whether they like or dislike you apart from a very brief change in Bonnie in episode 5 which was pointless because i think these choices should carry over several episodes. Season 1 we got Kenny and Lilly who either liked you or disliked you depending on your choices. The effort they put into that game was brilliant, every detail they used was perfect, like small mentions of past choices like in episode 5 when the boat went missing Lee can say "we would have stole the boat too" or something like that and then if you didn't steal food from the strangers car in episode 2 Kenny would remind you of that. Its little things like that which i loved from season 1 and in S2 i felt like we hardly got any of that

    * Befriending Sarah * Giving the dying man water * Taking Pete's watch * Foing with Pete or Nick * Killing the dog * Telling Pete and L

  • I'm just going to reply to this by stating what choices you put here would or would not have an impact "carrying over" to other episodes and not just to a scene that follows or something.

    1. Befriending Sarah

This choice whether to befriend her or not shows only a few changes but nothing like the differences with Kenny and Lilly in season 1. I'd say this had an ok amount of changes throughout the game and one of the better impacts but not incredible.

In episode 2 she'll show Clem the gun if you are friends but the scene won't take place at all if not.

In episode 3 Sarah will say something like "Don't hit my friend" if Carver slaps Clem and she won't say it if you don't befriend her.

In episode 4 i think Sarah will say hi or react more positively during the scene at the trailer park if you are friends but stay silent if not.

    1. Giving the dying man water

The only relevance this made was if you gave him the water and you chose to save Pete, then in episode 2 you have the choice of giving Pete the water instead. In terms of an impact to the story. Nothing. It wouldn't have mattered either way if you had saved Nick instead. For me this was a waste of time.

    1. Taking Pete's watch

Again it didn't make any difference at all. If you take the watch you can choose whether or not to give it to Nick later on. It's a choice that didn't matter at all. They could have made it where their friendship would sour a bit as if you give Nick the watch he would be annoyed that you took it or if you didn't take it or mention it then he would be fine with you but of course his idea never happened.

    1. Going with Pete or Nick

Didn't make any difference choosing Pete over Nick. Nick survives no matter what, Pete lives an episode longer if you save him but that is about it. That and one scene you are trapped in a hut with Nick or a type of van with Pete.

    1. Killing the dog

Dog still bites you and what happens to him always happens. This was disappointing for me because after Episode 1, Clem's wound from the dog was never mentioned again but in terms of a choice killing or leaving him, didn't make any difference at all.

    1. Telling Pete and Luke about the dog

Pete mentions this briefly to the rest of the group if you told them but that's the only time it is mentioned.

    1. Telling Pete and Luke about Christa

Same as above. What i would have liked is if you had say chosen this choice and then an episode later or a few episodes on, Luke mentions this conversation you had from episode 1. I feel choices benefit more when they carry over to other episodes.

    1. Seeking Alvin's help

This was only relevant if you spoke to him obviously and all it does is gets you a juice box which you don't get if you don't seek his help. There were choices here to threaten him or be really nice to him which could have been used to carry over to the next episode (or 2) by the way you treated him but no matter how horrible or nice you are, he still treats you the same in episode 2. They could have made it where if you had threatened him to help you, later on after they open the shed to find Clem had just killed a walker, Alvin could rat her out saying she threatened him. Or in Episode 2, he could reference their first meeting, how he still doesn’t trust her. It’s little things like these that made choice impacts great but they offered nothing here.

    1. Accepting Nick's apology

This could be similar to the early choice you mentioned about taking Pete’s watch. They could have made more of it where if you didn’t accept his apology, he could be more of an asshole towards Clem saying “You didn’t forgive me, so i’m not going to listen to you” or something like that. They could have used this more to impact what went on in episode 2. Even in episode 3 despite hardly any interaction with Nick there was still a scene you could talk to him and depending on this past choice, he could be nice or horrible to you but i felt they wasted this.

    1. Drinking with Nick

Now this would only have an impact if you saved Nick in episode 1 and drank with him in episode 2. Episode 5 makes a reference to this which i admit i did like.

    1. Trying to lock the door or opening it

This choice made no difference or impact at all. Carver enters the house no matter what. This choice does not get a mention later. They could have made Carver be more aggressive or reference this later on in the game, like “You were quick to lock me out in the cold when we first met”. Any subtle things like that would have been great.

    1. Defending Nick or yelling at him after he shoots Matthew

Only impact this had was a scene after it happened, depending on your previous choice, when talking to Nick he will say thanks for siding with him or he won’t if you don’t but again this choice doesn’t get mentioned again.

    1. Who you sit with at dinner

I remember when playing this scene for the first time. I sat with Kenny in my first save and sat with Luke in my second save and noticed that it said “Kenny will remember that” but didn’t say “Luke will remember that” which then got me thinking that this choice must mean something later on. And i was so disappointed for almost 3 full episodes that none of this was mentioned again until near the end of Episode 5 and Kenny mentioned this scene talking to Clem in the car. Loved it and probably one of my favourite choices from this game.

    1. Telling Walter what you think of Nick

This was a good choice that did have an impact on what happened to Nick in episode 2. Originally when i first played, i had no idea that Nick would die from this choice because i obviously told Walter the truth and stuck up for Nick. But this choice wasn’t carried over to the next episode unfortunately. I would have liked to have had a scene with Nick where he wished he could have thanked Walter for forgiving him or something in reference to this scene.

    1. The first thing you say to Bonnie

Yes this choice whichever you chose is referenced again in Episode 5 i think? Again i wish it could have perhaps been referenced more in Episode 3 and maybe Bonnie’s treatment of you would be different good or bad based on your decision but to be honest, whatever the first thing you say to Bonnie isn’t anything that important is it?

    1. Going out to look for Kenny or giving up

This choice changed the scene around you and added a few extra scenes and dialogue indoor and choosing to help Kenny resorted in Carlos receiving more physical harm but that was about it. In episode 3’s preview it would show Kenny kind of scolding you if you gave up which led me to believe that Kenny’s and Clem’s relationship would be strained if you had given up but unfortunately in the following episode, nothing was mentioned and he still treated you the same way. They could have really made things interesting here based on this choice but of course nothing changed.

    1. Protecting Alvin or sacrificing him

Obviously this choice determined whether Alvin would die here or make it to episode 3. Due to his wasted air time in episode 3, he was probably better off dying here to be honest as much as i hate to say it. But saving him or sacrificing him, Kenny refers to this scene in Episode 5 later which i liked either way.

    1. Getting slapped by Carver

This only happened if you answered Carver back, however, I would have liked it if he had referenced his earlier slap on Clem, saying something like “You don’t learn do you”.

    1. Getting Reggie in trouble in the pen

This choice changes the dialogue with Carver and Troy and their reaction to Reggie but in the long term as we know, it doesn’t change Reggie’s outcome.

    1. Telling Bonnie about what happened to Reggie

Again this choice changes dialogue later in the episode and does not carry over to another episode.

    1. Whose plan to go with, Kenny's or Luke's

This just changes some dialogue between the characters. It has no impact as Kenny’s plan always goes ahead either way. They could have made Luke speak up about it in the following episode or show he was annoyed about it to Clem. Either way it doesn’t change the outcome.

    1. Trying to help Kenny or not when Carver beats him

This choice does carry over to the rest of the episodes. As we know Clem will be left with a bruise/cut/mark on her face if she tries to help Kenny. If you do nothing, Sarita is the one that gets the bruise/cut/mark.

    1. Staying to watch Carver die or not (this one especially)

If you stay and watch his death, in Episode 5 if you tell Kenny to stop hitting Arvo, he will say something like “You lost your taste for this sort of thing”. If you watch or don’t watch, Jane will say at the very end of the game (if Kenny doesn’t kill her), “I don’t know how you could have watched that” and then whatever the other dialogue is if you didn’t watch it.

    1. Cutting off Sarita's arm

Yes this has an impact but only on whether Sarita dies there and then or not. Chop off her arm, she dies straight away, if not then later on she will do. I guess the choices of choosing to stop her turning or to leave her to turn(if you chop off her arm) is relevant too.

    1. Telling Rebecca you'd stay and help her

Which choice was this? When she’s giving birth? If so then it doesn’t really have an impact there or later on because either way the following scene still takes place. About the only thing you don’t see is Clem shoot some walkers.

    1. Saving Sarah in the trailer park (no matter how minor it is, it does change some stuff)

To be honest I don’t know of hardly anything that carries over after the trailer park except for a bit of Sarah dialogue.

    1. How you talk to Kenny in the tent

At that point Kenny can storm out if you call him an asshole haha or can be sorted calmly but either way he apologises in episode 5 either way.

    1. Who you go with first

Yes this changes a few extra scenes and dialogue depending on who you go with but that is about it. There is no consequences or regrets whoever you go with first.

    1. Stealing from Arvo

Probably the most annoying of all. This choice was completely pointless because stealing or not, his group still ambush/threaten you. About the only thing is that if you steal from him, you can choose to give the meds to Rebecca but it doesn’t have any other impact. There is no mention or dialogue with Arvo about you stealing or not in the following episode. I just found this a waste of time.

    1. Accepting Jane's nail file

It’s another pointless choice really. If you accept it, it is used in the following episode to make a fire. If you don’t then aren’t matches used instead?

    1. Staying or leaving after a few days

Again it just changes the dialogue between Kenny and Luke and who you sided with. It does not affect the rest of the story and for me it was just another pointless choice.

    1. Shooting Rebecca or calling for help

No impact on the future. Clem or Kenny shoots her and that’s the only change.

    1. Going to protect AJ

I felt that this choice should have had more importance, like the group constantly praising Clem for protecting her or scolding her if she didn’t but we didn’t get any of this apart from Luke saying “I didn’t realise she was even there” or whatever.

    1. Drinking with Jane

Kind of the same thing with Nick. What i mentioned earlier, it was a reference to drinking with him in episode 2 if you saved him.

    1. Getting Kenny to come back to the fire

Once again this just changed some dialogue. Kenny would end up coming to the fire in the end either way.

    1. Protecting or covering Luke

Now this choice had meaning which was good. It not only changed the outcome of his death but depending on how quickly you deal with the situation, Bonnie can die here too and if not, her relationship towards you can change if you didn’t listen to her. This is something I felt lacked a lot in the game. There should have been more personality changes from characters based on your choices.
    37. Which plan to go with and what to do with Arvo after Kenny gets the truck working

Just more dialogue changes. It doesn’t change the outcome in the end.

    1. Shooting Kenny or letting him kill Jane.

It’s one or the other, like a Carley or Doug choice. Either that or you can kill both of them. I personally don’t think either of these choices will matter but it will be very interesting to see how it carries over into Season 3.

    Now the final choices
    1. Going off on your own
    2. Going into Wellington or staying with Kenny
    3. Letting the family in or telling them to go fuck themselves

We were told that our final choices will matter and carry over into Season 3 so it will be fascinating to see how that plays out. I personally think (well, more like a prediction) that staying in Wellington, staying with Kenny, going off on your own or staying with Jane, letting the family in or not, all these choices will carry over for what? Say the first 10 minutes of Season 3? And then something will happen and then the story will always begin with Clem on her own with AJ no matter what. Sadly I cannot see the makers creating two different stories for Jane and Kenny given the locations of the characters. It was easier with the Carley and Doug choice in Season 1 but who knows? I’d love to finally see a determinant character actually survive the outcome for a whole season and not just for an episode or 2.
