Personalized Point & Click or Adventure game

this might sound like a daft question, but does anyone know how to get a personalized point & click game, or is it a case of making it making it on your own?

cause ive got a concept idea, its slighty loosly based on Monkey Island although it hasnt got anything to do with pirates, but might be a case of getting a team...just like Guybrush would say "I need Crew, Ship and a Map" or in my case "team, Game engine and script" i dont mind doing character voices for it, since im an Actor anyway, and i can write the script.

i know most people must of had a crazy idea once in there life, but also crazy enough to follow them, and why not, you only live once, unless you believe in re-encarnation, but still we all have some sort of deam or amibtion

so any help guys?

well i dont know how to make to make it with the programming and all, but having you on board would be great, cause your art work is impressive :)

I can just tell you that it's a huge project if you want to create such a game from scratch, even for experienced developers.
It's still when you use a toolkit, but then you have much less to worry about.
  • edited July 2009
If you're gonna make a game, you should be prepared to do everything yourself to some extent. Make a prototype and show it to people, it's harder to sell people on just an idea.
  • edited July 2009
Who do you think is going to make you a personalized video game as a favor? If you have a really great idea, pitch it, and maybe some people will be interested. I think your idea would have to be extremely catchy and original if you expect anyone to actually get onboard, because really, if I had the know-how to make a video game, I'd use my own idea, or the ideas from my friends, rather than some random guy who doesn't even say what his idea is before asking people for help.

I'd suggest staying away from the word "personalized," because it sounds like you just want someone to take a template and replace the main character's name with yours, like a personalized birthday card or something :p

well thing is i dont want to make a multi million selling game, its a...well i wouldnt call it a fan based game cause it wouldnt be based off a game as such, but in the process of thinking about doing one,and sugguesting how to go about it, because i dont know how to go about doing data processing or such, it would be a personal project

i used the word personalized, but was refering to making my own game.and only asking on this forum because i thought people would be kind and decent, and share a passion for adventure games, to group up and as a team a create one

For a personal endeavor I would probably use something like AVS.

lots of people have created thier own games with in varying qualities.
Even a few commercial releases have used it.
EDIT: (oops, This was already posted.)

I have seriously though about making my own game a couple of times but then I always think about how much work it would be versus how little people would actually play it.

I think the good ones tend to get recognised though. For example, some of my favourite AGS games have the crudest graphics (e.g. This Game and Ben There, Dan That)

I'd love to get involved doing music for a Monkey Island type game. Finding a group of motivated people is always hard to do when you have day job's.

Ever since I realised that I wanted to be a games programmer I've often thought about using tools like AGS to create some demos or possibly full games my self. But I've never had any real artistic ability and I didn't really understand programming so I never did anything with it.

Since then however I've started a computer games programming course and during the year just gone (2nd year) I had to create a couple of game demos just about from scratch. One was a 2d side scrolling (without the scrolling because I couldn't get it implemented in time) shooter coded in C++ using an API created by my tutor and the other was a 3D open world (ish, very ish) demo written C# using Microsft XNA framework.

While neither of the demos are that impressive (the 2D one is better than the 3D one - see the link in my sig if you're curious) it has given me a good basic understanding in programming and so I'm going to look into using AGS again soon, probably just from a technical standpoint (in other words I'll try to knock up some stick figure characters and very basic backgrounds!).

I could possibly help draw characters? I'm fairly good at drawing crude-lookin' characters in MSPaint. Here's an idea of how I go about drawing. ;)

hey, well id say you can try using Visionaire 2D (i prefer it way more than Wintermute)

Ive been developing my own adventure game since earlier this year, ive been slow since i have lots of work and im using my free time for this, but i believe that you can make indie adventure games by yourself with decent quality if you put some effort into it.

Here are some scenes of the one im making if anyone is curious about it.

Wow Glenfx, I love the art. Makes me compelled to ask if you need music :)

I love the color of the office.

Ravey, Im jealous. I don't see how it's possible to do that on Paint. Can you animate as well?

Let's not forget that that TellTale's very own Mark Darin started out making semi-amateur adventure games in Flash.

I've done some animation before, definately not my strength though. Fortunately you really only need a few modest animations for a prototype.

well im mainly do alot of theatre, but ive moved onto short movies, ive got one online, but its recommended for a mature or artistic audience, cause the nature of the film is very dark and realistic looking, but if you want to view it let me know by sending me a private message, also im going to some character voices for the english version of Zak Mckracken 2 :between time and space which is a fan based game...but i still need to get the voices recorded this week

I was wondering how that localization and the director's cut of that fangame was going... german language is something I can't handle. :(

That would be great ^^, Im half way through the demo though', so it’ll take me some time to put everything in place, but ill contact you when i have something to add voices :D.

Its nice to hear your doing the English voice for Zack2, been wanting to play it since it came out but cant play it in German.

BTW: just out of curiosity, do you have a range of voices?, so lets say you can interpret a grumpy old deep voiced guy and then a character like Max?

yeah not a problem, let me know when your ready :)

im not doing Zak's voice i wish i could, but someone beat me to the punch, but oh well, but i am doing about four or five various voices for different characters, so i guess yeah i can do different range of voices...if you want i can even do Shaggy (the singer) voice haha

well in the short movie i have online, i do a voice over for it, so you can watch it if you want, but let me warn you it is very dark, and can be distrubing, but its only acting but its up to you

I could help you make this game, I have the programming skills, but we would need other persons involved in the project to handle other issues like artworks, sound, etc.
We could use AGS, or any other adventure game engine available.
Let me know if you are still interested.
    Thanks

I keep saying I'd love to do music for an adventure game. If noone needs you bemag then I'll work with you. :)

Writing music for an adventure game is a very rewarding experience. I'd offer as well except I've got my hands full with other projects (some in real life). I've written a soundtrack for a full complete adventure game and am working on another one, but neither has been released yet.

As for making adventures game by yourself, that is hard. But when it comes to fanmade adventures I picture them as being made more for yourself than anybody else. Obviously you want others to enjoy your vision of an adventure as you do, but since there's no money in it you really need to care enough about it yourself to look at it as being worth while at all. I think it's good to actually start out programming a little demo of something in AGS first, though. If for no other reason to understand the language and see what's possible and once you do get a programmer you can have an idea of what you can ask him to do instead of asking him to make something magical somehow lol.

AGS isn't that hard to learn, though. There are some great tutorials out there listed on its website. I've started a couple games myself. I never finish anything, though. My problem is I can't think of any good story ideas, characters, plots, conflicts, or anything really. I'm not a story teller at all. I can program, compose music and to certain extent make art, but nothing has ever come to real fruition yet. I've been working for years on a remake of King's Quest II made with Sierra's own SCI engine (using the fanmade SCI Studio and SCI Companion programs). And even with the story, plot and puzzles laid out for me it's still hard to find time to pull everything together and keep going. I imagine it'll get finished someday, though. It's all about keeping the motivation. That's a hard thing to do for a free fangame.

    Good luck!

Hey Mi, I really would like to hear some of your work someday. I'm leaving for work but I'd like to talk to you some other time. I ussually never have time to talk with other musicians.

I've just started an interesting project. I'm teaching myself Inform 7 (a language used to create Interactive Fiction games) and to save myself the time and effort of creating a story I'm attempting to adapt the Secret of Monkey Island.
  • edited July 2009
I'm curious: how are you doing the dialogue trees? I've used Inform 7, but I only really know the basics.

Not that I didn't try to learn all of it. It would be really nice to be able to focus on anything.

    Hey guys...

Wolfstar, I am currently working on a game, it's MI based and it puts Guybrush in a never before seen situation. Comical, of course. I am currently waiting for two guys to reply to my messages. Another member of our team is Secret Fawful who will work on backgrounds and characters. I will compose the music for the game, as well as work in AGS. Both SF and me are working on the script.
If you want to join us, that would be cool! If you have your own ideas and want your own project, that is also cool, but I cannot help you as I got my own + three more projects I'm composing for and lending my voice to the characters.
If anybody else here would like to join, send me a PM. :)
  • edited July 2009
Cool... is it going to be a short game or full game?
  • edited July 2009
Full, the script started out pretty well. We've got half of the most important characters casted. Would you be interested in joining? :)
  • edited July 2009
LOL, I cant act... I'm afraid I would only ruin the whole thing.
  • edited July 2009
No, but you can draw :)
