If I remeber right, it was because the group stole his supplied, leading to the deaths of his family. He wanted to get revenge but then he got hold of the walkie talkie and started communicating with Clementine. When he heard all the danger she was out in, he decided he would be a better parent to her, and lured her to him. Does that sound about right? Its been awhile.
The Stranger took his son out for hunting to get him experienced living in how the world was. He came back to his wife and daughter and told them he had lost his son while hunting. They went out looking for him but never found him. That was when the group stole all of his supplies from the station wagon. They then returned and found all their stuff gone. His wife left him with his daughter but he found them only a short distance later dead. He blamed the group for what had happened to his family and seeked revenge. He was communicating with Clementine on her walkie talkie and was telling her lies that he had her parents and knew where they were. He lured Clementine outside the mansion and kidnapped her. Seeing all the danger he saw Clementine in, he figured he would be a better day then Lee because he knew how to be dad and she wouldn't be exposed to what she had been with Lee. And not too mention how crazy he had become by cutting of his wife head and keeping it in a bowling bag when she was a walker.
