Why is it that I keep seeing this?

Okay, all over the forums, I've been seeing people trash MI4. I've even seen some trash MI3. Why? I think that both are great games. Sure, they don't have the same feel as the first two, but so what? Both were hilarious, both had the pirate feel, and EMI was a good continuation of the series. I've also seen people trash each other because of opinions. It really ticks me off. So someone doesn't like TMI. It's not like you have to chew their arms off and throw the rest as sacrifices to Herman the volcano god. I love TMI, but I am getting tired of not being able to go on the forums without seeing hate messages everywhere.

And now I will make waffles. They've got waffles in 'em. :):p:o:D:cool::eek::rolleyes:;):(

...There's soap and peanuts in these ones!

MONKEY!!!!!!!!!!!

I think most people will agree that EMI wasnt a bad game, just alongside the other 3 it seemed that way

I enjoyed it, but the magic of the the others wasnt quite there

I think they weren't exactly like the others, so yeah.

    I like them all.... I'm glad I didn't hate the 4th one.

EMI was OK for me. The controls were not the best, and Monkey Kombat was completely unnecessary.

You know what, I actually like Monkey Kombat.

I guess the real complaint for me was really the controls and a slightly lack-luster storyline as compared to the other 3 monkey islands. EMI is easily still above a notch against most adventure games, but it is probably dwarfed due to the timing of its release. It also have the collection of some of the puzzles that I really hated (like finding Pegnose Pete in the swamp and the twin parrots). The design of the puzzles ain't back, but personally I preferred a scenic environment while adventuring. Just unfortunate that those two puzzles was so dedicated with the gameplay, it felt almost like solving a Myst or Zork or Sudoku puzzle.

So even though it is not a bad game, it is still a game I will think thrice before installing it on my PC.

I thought the controls were absolutely horrible.

That and the low-polygon, low-res texture 3d was very jarring, as I had just finished CMI. I kinda feel that it may have actually been better to keep 2d graphics for Monkey 4, heck possibly even for TMI. Considering how many people are still using last millennium graphics technology, the quality is never going to be comparable when trying to make 3d graphics that a mass audience is going to be able to run. The problem, of course, becomes scaling the 2d backgrounds to all the umpteen different unusual resolutions people are running.

Escape wasn't a bad game... it just well, it wasn't a MI game to a lot of fans, myself included. With 3 it felt like the writers had played the original two games to death, it was full of so much passion and love... 4 felt... flat. It was as if the writers/designers had simply had a board meeting that faintly rushed through the plot of the first three games. The feeling wasn't there. I was ok with it, tolerated it but didn't feel the love and attention to detail evident in 3... well, that was until I got to Monkey Island itself and encountered Monkey Kombat, a Log Flume and worst of all, Herman Toothrot violating the canon in horrible horrible ways. That "reveal" ruined the game for me, I just couldn't tolerate such blatent disregard for what had already been established. They didn't even bother to explain it, or have Guybrush point out "but wait a moment, what about those journals?" you know? That and he'd gone from slightly creepy distant old man to comedical senile imbecile, which was ANNOYING. I liked Herman in the first two games, he was delightfully vague and you always got the impression he was hiding more than just a second boat. But yeah...
The bad guy was just lame.. though I did like Nuttin atol.
Overall, it had some lovely set pieces, and a few good jokes but it wasn't Monkey Island. Good adventure game, bad MI game. It's sort of like the Dune books that weren't written by Frank Herbert. No matter how interesting and how good they are, they aren't RIGHT.
3 got away with it because it was so obviously made by fans of the series, you can see the fanboy glee in those in jokes.. 4 seems to have been designed by committee. It's almost.. soulless.

When I played Curse back in 1997 I thought it was such a huge leap forward for the series, I absolutely loved it. And this is coming from the guy who spent an entire year trying to beat the first one (playing in English which is not my mother tongue) when he was only 8 years old.

I played it. Heck, I even enjoyed playing it.

But overall I didn't like the way the story went. And I think getting it wrong really hurt.
Story is a very important part of an Adventure game, and it's also the main thing you are left with when the game is over.

Hmmm, give me a reason to play MI4 - I bought it, installed but never got out of the first pub through frustration. Is there a mouse mod? Or is the keyboard play not so bad? I'd love to try it again but have very bad memories, I felt the series had died when I tried it. Could not handle the keyboard controls.

Am I missing out on some classic MI ?

    Classic?

Depending on who you ask, you could get "NO!", "No", "No, but...", or "not too much." Personally I don't think it's something that should be skipped over, though.

I quite liked MI4, till I get to the Monkey Kombat part. I hated THAT part. But the overall game is quite good, anyway. There's lightyears far from the three others, of course.

I'm a story-teller (and you can interpret that in any way you wish). The story is the thing that I like most about these games. All 5 (including Tales, of course) had their own story to tell. Even if I consider MI4 to be on the bottom of the list regarding this subject, I still place it on the list.
People worked really hard for that game. That's what I appreciate even more than the story.

EMI is OK, but far from the other 3. The story was less intriguing, the whole "ultimate insult" thing felt a bit ridiculous, the Toothrot/Grandpa Marley story was a slap in the face at the fans who are commited to the overall story (http://www.miwiki.net/Herman_Toothrot#Plot_inconsistencies). And I guess I don't even have to say anything about Monkey Kombat.
While it was a quite enjoyable game, it was a disappointment.

Monkey Island 1 & 2 I played to death when I was younger and still revisit now.
Monkey Island 3 was a new direction, very well executed, clearly by fans, for fans. I never completed it, but only because I had to give the disk back.
Monkey Island 4 I only bought this year, didn't like it much and never got as far as the loathed monkey combat.

I recommend you play it. Although it is my least favourite, too, that doesn't mean it is unfun. The controls are okay and there are some really good puzzles to wrap your brain around.
Near the end it becomes a bit ... strange. Still, I believe no Monkey Island fan should miss it.

BTW: My favourite game is MI2. What cooler pirate action than to collect map pieces for an ultimate treasure to be dug out!? Again, odd towards the finale but with an innovative "boss fight".

Again, I didn't hate the fourth game, but it was no where near as good as the other three. Some of it was still pretty funny, but in general.. the story was not as good, some of the puzzles where just plain bad and the main bad guy was just not at all appealing.

I can't believe anyone would trash the third game though, as it's arguably the best in the series.

I love Monkey 4 as much as I love any other Monkey Island.
It definitely had its MINOR weaknesses (for example controls, textures), but had also alot of strengthes (for example humour, some of the best cutscenes in terms of timing, voice acting, visual choreography and orchestral feel).

But I really do love all 5 Monkey Islands so far ;)

another thing: why are you guys complaining about the controls of MI4? I had thought Grim Fandango would have gotten you used to it... which is also why I don't get complaints about TMI controls... they're the same as GF and MI4 besides the mouse drag. I didn't even use the mouse drag!

Well, I never played Grim Fandango so I never got used to it from that game.

I'd say the TMI controls are leaps and bound beyond Monkey 4 as you can actually click on items with the mouse to interact with them. In 4 you had to physically maneuver Guybrush into the correct position next to the item to even be able to access the menu of available actions. Then you had to scroll through them to pick the action you wanted.

My memory is very hazy on this, but I also seem to remember that the default control scheme had you moving Guybrush around like he was a radio controlled car - the left arrow turned Guybrush left instead of moving him to the left of the screen, and the up arrow moved him forwards. I could be wrong on this part, though.

I like MI:4, but the thing that I think that puts a lot fo people off, is that it wasn;t very.. Monkey-Islandy.

I'm not going to talk about the Control scheme as frankly I just finished the game (again) on the 1st and I still don't understand it. Where it fell down with me, was other than the references to Elaine and the 'Brush being married, and the fact that LeChuck and Voodo were invovled, There was nothing that branded this as Monkey Island about the story. you coudl have put completely different characters in there, and it would have been the same game, just not called Monkey Island.

that is not to say it is a bad game (once you look past Monkey Combat) it;s still a good game, past the changes the made to history of the games, and as I have said in the past, Bad Monkey Island is still better than 90% of the other games I've played.

^^ I love the nickname "the 'Brush". so cute! :)

I replayed EMI last weekend... and was totally shocked to find I had completely blanked out everything that happened in it from the end of Jambalaya Island on... but yeah. It was ok, but just not very monkey islandy (apart from the random memos on Monkey Island, that was awesome). Didn't like the ending much.

I would never trash CMI, it's a great game (although I do have some issues with the way they took some characters), but I can understand having a problem with it, since it did completely change the tone of the series. They tried something new and it worked, for most of us, but I can see how other people wouldn't like it.

I thought EMI was rather good. as LGH said, in terms of production value, it shined. As for the controls, back then I was an avid Resident Evil fan and I have to say that I really enjoyed them. The only problem I had with this game was the hugh emphasis on commercialism (it was funny at times, but it was just too much) and the final chapter, where everything just fell apart plot-wise. It really gave me the feeling that whoever wrote that chapter didn't play the other games and that was a shame because up until that point you could see that alot of thought went into this game.
Oh, and Monkey kombat was great.

I think I just realized why I never had any issues with Monkey4 or Grim Fandango's controls! I'm an old Alone in the Dark & Resident Evil player. And the controls are very much like the first 4 Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil games (6 if you count REmake and Zero).

Anyway, I really really liked Monkey4. My favorite is still Monkey2, but I still love it. Monkey3 was a game I never really got into though. I love the humor, characters and story. But for some reason I prefer to watch other people play that while I just look. And no other Monkey Island game have that effect on me.

    But hey, that's just me.

Can you elaborate on that some?, as I think it might be my favorite adventure game to date

I honestly can't think of a reason to trash CMI either, it's pretty much perfect in my eyes (except for the rushed ending).

But I think I enjoyed EMI a lot more than most people. Sure, they kind of missed the target in regards to story and atmosphere, but I think it had some strong points too. For one thing, if I'm not mistaken, it's definitely the longest of the series. While the other games had (more or less) two major acts, EMI had three (Lucre, Jambalaya, Monkey), with several mini-acts in-between.

And I know length isn't everything, but it also had some really fun and challenging puzzles. However, once you get to Monkey Island, the fun really goes downhill. Even aside from Monkey Kombat, there's just something kinda boring about the island. And I won't even try to defend the giant monkey robot.

I think Curse of Monkey Island was great! The sudden leap from pixels to lush animated cartoons and digitized speech and music was very exciting.

When Escape from Monkey Island came out, I kind of looked at the graphics and thought - eeww. They could have made the 3D models look more detailed. Most of the characters were bulky looking and had flat 2D animated faces slapped onto a 3D model. I've got nothing against 3D - in fact I much prefer games advancing from 2D to 3D. But they could have done better considering the year it was made and other more realistic looking 3D games.

Also the keyboard control scheme was adequate, I was surprised that there was no mouse control at all though. It definitely felt like this game was made for consoles and made compromises. I liked Curse of Monkey Island's coin interface - it simplified and got rid of all the verb commands of the previous 2 games but was still full of possibilities for looking, grabbing and using stuff.

Tales of Monkey Island is fantastic. It's 3D again, and that's good because I just can't appreciate 2D graphics any longer after having been spoiled by interactive 3D environments. I really think that people who keep going on about "make the next one 2D" should be locked in asylums for their crazy ravings. The characters in Tales are much more of what I was expecting from a 3D Monkey Island game - the facial expressions on Guybrush made him seem much more alive, as well as other things like the hair moving in the wind.

The controls were great. I am used to the keyboard/mouse control scheme from playing Wallace and Gromit, but this was a step up to the next level with the mouse click drag walking/running. It felt very intuitive and much better than clicking on the ground every couple of seconds to move. It felt more like I had control of Guybrush's movements. Also I'm used to the Telltale way of just having one click option on objects to either grab or look at them. It's as if the control system of adventure games has just been distilled down over time and you no longer need separate look at, pickup and talk buttons any more. Is that a good thing? Well, it works... but some would say it's also fun to look at a character and get a funny description rather than just automatically entering a conversation. But is it necessary? Who knows. It's personal preference.

Monkey Combat was damn annoying trying to remember specific moves (I tended to write them down ;)) but I loved it! It made up for the lack of insult sword fighting :)

However, I agree with the OP. I LOVE Escape from Monkey Island! I thought the game was brilliant, funny and an all round amazing MI game!

Just as good as all the rest in my own opinion. :)
