First graphical adventure game I played I think was magic land Dizzy, platform adventure thingie.
...I had that on a giant IBM floppy disk...
...but played it religiously at my friends house from a cassette tape.
It was a loong time ago so I can't recall what systems these were played on.
We used to play magicland dizzy every week and would always lose our last life in the volcano.
I've never completed magicland dizzy either....and I tried reeaaally hard to a few years back
The first 2 adventure games that I played was Maniac Mansion and Zak Mckracken on my Commodore 64 I never completed any of them as I couldn't find the save game function But soon Space Quest 3 followed and then I was hooked. Up through the nineties I collected almost every game from LucasArts and Sierra's adventure games.
It was a glorious time, I'm feeling a bit nostalgic now
ooo and I think i played curse of enchantia (lots of floppy disks) before getting in on the secret of monkey island, DOTT and discworld 1 action.
I have played Curse of Enchantia before... I didnt really get into it, I still have it... But I remember how Kings Quest 7's cover was a complete rip off of Curse of Enchantia's
Another game I remembered now is The Pawn - awesomeness.
Never heard of The Pawn, i'll look it up
My dad still looks fondly upon Legend of Kyrandia, we spent a lot of time playing it together.
I leant the floppys to a 'friend' in primary school in exchange for Sam and Max. Sam and Max wouldn't work and the stupid boy ruined my floppy disks.
Playing it a few years ago thanks to the underdogs, there were still parts towards the end that stumped me.

Haha, I never noticed that. Probably because I never owned Curse of Enchantia. I used to play that at a mates' house in primary school as well.
I'm sure we had to use computer magazine hints or tips. I remember playing the game on about 15 floppy disks and reading from a computer magazine. The game play was definitely not worth that many disks...even if the being underwater part was quite cool.
The secret of monkey island round my aunts on my cousins amiga. i loved it - never played anything like it before. Was disapointed when i tried to get it for my atari st and realised i couldn't because i didn't have a meg of ram! later got it on my first pc along with all the other graphic adventures i missed. then came the fmv phase!
lol gabriel knight 2 and tex murphy the pandora directive are often considered among the best graphic adventures! and im ashamed to admit i kind of enjoyed the phantasmagoria games!
Almost 20 years ago my older brother had a computer and one day he went out and bought King's Quest I.
Our lives would never be the same after that.
Soon King's Quest 2 followed, Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2, Gobliiins, Goblins 2, Gabriel Knight,....
Maniac Mansion on the NES. Dear God that was a hard game! I was so proud when I actually beat it (though I could only do it with a certain combination of people).
After that things get fuzzy. A friend of mine owned Loom, Secret of Monkey Island, and Legend of Kyrandia, so I borrowed those from him a lot. I also somehow inherited a bunch of CD-ROMs which included Fate of Atlantis and King's Quest VI (along with Dune and Lord of the Rings which were *kind of* Adventure games). I later bought King's Quest V (after liking VI and renting V on the NES) and the first two Kyrandias (friend owned the third, so again I borrowed that a lot :P)
First game for me was Leisure Suit Larry (the cartoony one, though played the text version after) and then Goblins, Space Quest and Monkey Island. Didn't finish TSoMI the first time I played it, and only got back to it after finishing The Curse.
I still have a bunch of old Infocom text adventures including the early Zork text games and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.... All the maps and books are pretty cool that came with those..
Anyone old enough to remember those? Or at least old enough to have had them laying around the house like I was?
Games before there where graphics to go along with them.... crazy times.... kids now would look at you like you where crazy if you tried to get them to play those.
A demo version of The Secret of Monkey Island for the Amiga, sometime in 1995.
The BBC Basics at school may have had a few text adventure games but I didn't really have a go on them. Judging by some of the responses on this thread, I'm not nearly as old a gamer as I think I am.
I think that was Leisure Suit Larry 1 when I was in third grade. Which was interesting, since I didn't really know any English, I just watched my mother type in the commands and listened to her translations and pretty soon I was able to play it myself. Amazing how young minds can suck up knowledge from the strangest sources.
Secret of Monkey Island when I was about six... but got stuck and lost the code-wheel, so didn't finish it until I got it on CD five or so years later..
turns out you had to open the stupid cereal box onboard the ship, sigh.
I remember trying to play Space Quest with my sister and dieing over and over. I remember we tried to play Leisure Suit Larry, but couldn't get past those questions at the beginning
I think it was Hugo's House of Horrors that got me hooked on adventure games. I was older when I first played SoMI. But there still wasn't the internet for hints, so it took a long time!
King's Quest II for me. I think I was six or seven at the time, and the game was relatively new. I was hooked on Sierra's AGI games after that, so when I played Secret of Monkey Island (EGA version) in 1991, I was stunned that a game existed in which:
a.) you didn't have to type and guess what particular word the programmer was looking for, and
b.) you couldn't die.
I still have some nostalgia for the KQ series since it was my introduction to the adventure genre, but I don't enjoy replaying them in the same way that I enjoy replaying the Lucasarts games. I mean, try replaying KQV, which came out the same year as the first Monkey Island game, then compare it to SOMI. Seriously, what a brutal, capricious, unforgiving game KQV is, and what a breath of fresh air SOMI is. I will never forgive Sierra for the boot-cat puzzle... ever.
I think for me it was the Hugo text parser adventure games, i.e. "Hugo's House of Horrors," or the Amazon Jungle one.
Man, looking up those screenshots really takes me back.
Hey, someone else who's played Hugo's House of Horrors! That was my first one. I have absolutely no recollection of how I got it, but I did manage to play it through to the end. I also did not know, up until reading your post, that there was an Amazon Jungle Hugo game.
That game was pretty cool, and later my dad bought me the Lucasarts Archives II, with Fate of Atlantis, DOTT, and Sam & Max in it.

There are three Hugo games. The jungle one is the third one They are all good (well apart from the fact you can die!)
i started with kings quest 7 xD my neighbor had it and we used to spend hours just trying to get out of the desert at the beginning ^_^
edit: come to think of it my first adventure game was the 7th guest xD i used to play the demo version on computers in stores like circuit city, best buy, and comp USA, then we eventually bought the game and i ended up having nightmares for YEARS!! (i still sometimes have nightmares about the 7th guest and im 22 xD)
It was great, I remember it like it was yesterday...or a couple of days ago. Tales of Monkey Island is my first adventure game. Yep, I'm 36 and that is the first one I've played. I'm downloading The Secret of Monkey Island on XBLA Wednesday. That'll be my second! Then I'm gonna get some Sam and Max. I'll be a veteran in no time!

But both where probably a little inspired by this

Irishmile, you made that for me and you know it. But I like silverwolfpet...so I'll share it with him.

Wow Irishmile, quite the copy, never realised.
I never found the manual with Dr Fred's insane CD-protection formulas.
Still enjoyed playing it though!
 the horror....

this thread existed in another game but
INFOCOM... anything..
wishbringer mainly .. or zork
then on to the somewhat graphic versions of things like
Tass times in Tone town.
and mystery house..
lucasarts point n click wasnt even a glimmer in an eye yet :P
and kq7 wasnt a rip off.. how do you spell homage ?
oh and PARSER FTW!!! i love to type.. wish telltale would add some back code to allow us old freaks to type EXAMINE TAVERN SIGN..
Our lives would never be the same after that.

I miss those days

Secret of Monkey Island
Loom
around when they first came out on DOS
Any Loom remakes in the future *nudge nudge*
Anyone old enough to remember those? Or at least old enough to have had them laying around the house like I was?

yea...played those.
*feels old now*

LOL!!! I bet you didn't get the real translation.... "and then Larry and the hook...er uh princess played patty cake."
