(S2 SPOILERS!!!) How easily they could've fixed ****'s death in Amid The Ruins

edited January 2016 in The Walking Dead

Alright guys just hear me out

Instead of Nick getting shot randomly and that's the last time you see him alive, maybe, just maybe, he could've died helping Clem fight off the walkers that attack her, giving her a chance to escape because of his sacrifice.

How great would that be. His character would actually have a point after In Harms Way just throws him in the garbage, and he would be paying Clem back for convincing Walt to save him. Lastly, it would've shown that someone gave a shit about Clem after she gets lost in the herd.

During a replay of S2 Nick quickly became my favourite character introduced in S2, and the horrible way they treated his character after A House Divided is in my opinion the worst thing Telltale have done in the TWD series (yes, even worse than Sarahs second death) and I really hope they don't pull this crap in S3.

  • I agree with you, Nick's death was awful, he deserved more.

  • can you put stars instead of nick because some people haven't played the game ;)

  • I was hoping there would be a friendship between him and Kenny.

  • Even if you put "(S2 SPOILERS)" in your thread title, it's probably not good to put direct spoilers right in the thread title in plain view. Even if most people here have played Season 2 by now I imagine, it's better to save the direct spoilers for the thread itself.

As for what you said, I agree that would have been a better way to have them die in the story.

  • I agree this would have been more fitting death. Saving both Nick and Alvin barely seemed worth it with how little we got to see of them afterwards but at least Alvin went out a hero.

  • Talking about determinant characters, I've always wanted to see a determinant character be the only one who's able to save another character. Does it sound a little confusing? Let me give you an example.

Let's say we have Dave and Jenna in our crew, and their opinions on what is right and what is wrong often collide, causing a division amongst the group members. We have to face a small herd of walkers, and Dave is in trouble, about to get bit, and everything is in slow motion. We, as players, have a choice to help him, or act like we didn't see him. Most of the people who sided with him previously will obviously help him (but not necessarily all), and only a small fraction of the people who sided with Jenna will decide to help him. Let's say half of the people who didn't pick a clear side help Dave.

So, he actually makes it out alive with the rest of your companions if you decide to help him. But an episode later, the group will encounter another pack of walkers. This time Jenna is in trouble, and Dave is the only one who sees her on time. If he is alive, he will save her, but they will continue to argue later on. However, if you decided not to save Dave, chances are you were siding with Jenna. Well, too bad, because Jenna could not be saved by anyone and walkers ripped her apart, leaving the group without a leader.

I had an alternate idea of a Nick death as well, and I am going to hijack your thread to mention it!

He'd survive into episode 5. During the shoot out, Luke would be on the side of the wall where he is now, but Nick would be behind the other wall. If Clementine grabs the baby, she gets behind cover no problem. Nick would end up popping out of cover in an attempt to get a shot off, only to get fatally hit. Luke would attempt to rush over to Nick, which leads to him getting shot in the leg like he does now. As Buricko tries to finish off Luke, a dying Nick would use his strength to pull himself in front of Luke, effectively shielding him from the bullet, leading to Nick getting hit a second time. Luke, in a small fit of grief, would shoot and kill Buricko himself, instead of Kenny doing it, which would be the first (and last) time we see Luke kill another person.

If you ran for cover, Luke would go for the baby, and get shot in the leg like he does now. Nick would rush over to help pull Luke behind cover, and end up getting shot in the process, which would lead into the same as above, with Nick bleeding out and dying from his wounds.

If Nick didn't survive up to this point, the scene will play out like it does currently: Luke getting shot trying to save the baby, or getting shot trying to move between cover, and Kenny saving him by shooting Buricko.

I'm one of the people that's against the idea of every determinant character dying, but in Nick's case, I think him going out trying to save one of the few people he cares about and considers family would make his death worth something, or at the very least round out some his character to some degree. A lot of Nick's story in the first two episodes is formed around loss; the loss of his mother, the loss of Pete, both of which contribute to him shooting Matthew, as well as his overall brash behavior in the first episode; he's worried about losing more people he cares about, namely Luke, who is at that point his closest friend and only real family left.

It only makes sense for his story to end with him ultimately saving someone he cares about, even if it's at the cost of his own life. It also has some symbolic meaning, as it would mean that he goes out just like his uncle did; saving someone's life (provided you went with Pete, that is). At the end of the day, despite some tension between the two, Nick ultimately looked up to Pete, so it's tragically heartwarming to have him go out in a way that mirrors his uncle's actions, and in a way that Pete would have been proud of. It also doubles in that it makes Luke's death even more tragic in hindsight, since it means that his attempt to save him was unfortunately in vain. And even more depressingly, it means he would have died thinking he saved Luke's life for the better.

It would also provide a small, determinant character moment for Luke: him shooting and killing Buricko, the first time we would see him kill another person. Luke is one of very few people who never killed another character, so having him suddenly get angry and vengeful enough to do so would mark a stark contrast from the Luke we've seen throughout the season, as well as prove how heavily Nick's death/sacrifice affected him.

  • Very interesting. I'm interested, do you have any alternate idea as to how you thought Sarah should've died?

Personally, I would have preferred if Nick Lived to Episode 5, and He could be one of the traitors depending on how you treated him.

  • And what happens to him if he doesn't betray you???

  • He would not betray you and he would be next to you in the truck after you wake up, but when the truck crashes, he would be lost from the walkers attack, making his status unknown.
