This Game Adapts to the Choices you make... Or does it?

My Opinion - Just so we're clear

So right at the start of the game, The very first thing that you see, is a message that says that the game adapts to the choices that you make.
I have just completed TWD: Michonne's first Ep; I have many opinions about this game already even though at the time of writing only the first episode is released, it is possible that the next two change a few opinions of mine now.
But as of today, I feel that the game is too similar, similar in fact to the first, second and DLC of the walking dead and on top of that, the Minecraft story mode story that is the only other Telltale game series I have played, seems to also follow that same similarity.

When they created The walking dead season 1. It became apparent that the game they created was amazing, I loved it, I cried, I laughed. They had created a fantastic story.
My issue now is the formula that seems to populate the games. I understand that there is a story to tell, but after the last emotional scene in TWD Season 1, It seems that each story has got this idea that there needs to be a tragedy. Now I'm all up for a good tragedy and season 1 did it very well, season two also did some good gut wrenching scenes too. I don't know about older games as I personally haven't played them, so they won't partake in my opinion for obvious reasons.
This one however, we haven't had a chance to get to know the characters in the slightest before you are trying, rather successfully I might add, to kill a character, which in a way sad that someone, a kid, got killed! It makes it worse that you have no say in the matter at all. In fact you don't seem to get a lot of choice in the games at all.

I'll give you some examples and then I'll ask you my question - Again Spoiler Warning!

Season 1 - All of the choices that I remember where mainly based on appearance or small changes to the conversation.
Whether or not for instance, you stole from the car midway though the game gave clem a hoodie, it doesn't affect her in any way, it doesn't make her cold later if you don't take it and it obviously could make a difference later when you find the man at the end of the game as he has a go at your for stealing his stuff.

Season 2 - Again appearance based or small changes to the conversation, It is obvious when confronted by Arvo and his gang, and the point when clem gets shot again by Arvo.
Starting with the first one, from what I have seen, Arvo will say that you stole from him whether you did or not.
And even if you do exactly what mike says to if you start shouting for help, clem will always get shot.

Now I understand that the story has to be told, but at what point did the story adapt to my choices. Should there be a choice based story where the game really does change dependent on your choices. Or should it be the same. Or again could it be somewhere in-between where to keep the story going it takes you on one path but will allow you to change the outcome of the game similar to the end of Season 2 where you have the option of actually picking your ending.

I would like to hear what others think: If they are following a too similar formula for the game and if there are other points in the game where whatever your choice was if the game seemed to ignore it?
