TWD: Michonne Unfairly Rated Low?
I can't shake this feeling that TWD: Michonne is purely being rated so low because its about a character that some may know a lot about if they read the comics or even from the show. I keep seeing it in reviews as a sort of bad thing that you got zombies and a character you pretty much already know.
I thought the game so far was pretty damn solid and was surprised to see scores of 6 and even some 5's. How do you guys feel about it?

I dont want anybody to spoil anything but I am really wondering if the show will go an entirely different route altogether. I thought this was Michone before the show but apparently its further than the show is. Considering where Michone is right now in the show.....its kinda hard to imagine how in the heck she ends up on her own...and freaking out about her kids again.
It's a good game...the forcing me to pay for all episodes at once thing and the episode being so short is the main problem with this episode. Its way too short....it being a mini series isn't an excuse. The episodes themselves shouldn't be any shorter. This is clearly THE first or 2nd shortest episode in all of the Walking Dead seasons....possible shorter than the 400 days. If we can expect this going forward.....We will have 3 episodes that don't span the runtime of any given TWO episodes from either season 1 or 2.
I kind of feel the same. I feel like it was a solid first episode and dont quite understand why people dont think it stacks up with what weve already gotten from the Walking Dead games.
The game is about comic Michonne. Her and TV show Michonne don't have to end up at the same place, and probably won't, as they are two different characters in two different universes that just share the name and basic appearance.
Yeah. I was surprised.
I mean, I understand that it was short because it was, but complaining about the storyline? "oooh telltale isn't giving us anything new" Oh, but of course. I've seen thousands of boat communities in TWD before. Walkers were also fought countless times in the water. And killing zombies while hallucinating? Happened with every character.
And the hostage situation? Maybe a bit like the Carver situation but already done better than in Season 2. All I can complain on is Randall's one-sided personality but Norma was fucking awesome.
Personally, I think the reviews are somewhat justified in this case. I watched a playthrough of the first episode, and I didn't feel all that invested in the game enough to justify purchasing the game and trying it out myself, and I found myself agreeing that the game doesn't really deserve a score higher than 6 or 7 out of 10 for now.
Posted below is a list of my problems with the mini-series so far:
The episode wasn't without praise though, as I enjoyed the graphics, soundtrack, the look of the new community, and the potential greg vs. grey morality that will hopefully be further explored in the second episode.
Dont think its rated low cuz of the Michonne character or just cuz its way too short.
About the story... for me the similar situation to s2 isnt the problem and i like the setting alot. But i am not comfortable with lots of conversations and dialogue choice. Several times i felt totally ignored and other times upset about the given dialogue choices. For example the whole part with Norma was a total chore for several reasons.
Also for me (and lots of others) they failed to wake much interest for most characters. Besides Michonne and Pete i cared more for the victims in the ferry than for any of the other character.
With more polished conversations and a slower pace (which would result in a longer episode with more conversations/character development) the game would have been way better.
I think it's simply the fact that this game had expectations since Michonne was slapped onto the title and those expectations weren't met.
Also I feel like this episode was trying to get to sympathize with Sam and her brother but we didn't get much time to learn anything about them. We were thrown into trouble, captured and questioned for crimes we did not commit. Next thing we know, we're given the choice to stop Sam from killing Zachary or let her. Everything happened so quickly.
Different opinions are different.
I can understand why the low scores. I like the game, but I understand her story thanks to the comics and I'm not too upset over choices meaning very little. The length with the price is upsetting and a lot of side characters introduced are nothing (so far). It's hard to get attached to anything. We know the formula well by now and even though we're stuck in interesting/dramatic situations, I can see why someone would roll their eyes thinking what's the point? I can empathize with the cynical on this one, but the game still shows promise.
There's this book series I finished reading recently called Sky Chasers by Amy Kathleen Ryan, and the great thing I really enjoyed about it was how it could turn the tables on characters time and again where it made you question their motives and morals. There were a handful of times through these books where I was convinced I hated a character only to wind up pitying them or even on one occasion rooting for them. For example there's this incident where these girls get kidnapped by this woman, but when you have a scene alone with her and discover her reasoning behind what she did, on one hand you understood why she did it, but on the other you acknowledge her decisions were still wrong and still don't trust her [and even partly question if she's telling the truth] but even so, things like this throughout those books made the characters very human in the way that they were flawed.
So I agree with you, I hope we see something of a grey area explored. I feel that already with Norma and Randall in that I'm not sure they really were the ones to kill the group on the ferry despite Sam saying so and the game implying they did.
The main review issues is exactly that though. Its fine, its good. But its been done before, several times now.
So people are grading it lower because of that? I guess that and the ever present "Its too short, its too short!"complaint. That seems unfair to me. How many times have people wanted what was familiar, like Clementine? The WD universe doesnt hold that much opportunity for new situations, but I think they added enough to not make it exactly like the first two seasons, but still feel like it belongs in this world. And its only the beginning of the story.
This kind of makes me think, why bother with season three? Whats going to be so fundamentally different that makes it worth playing, if they are going to the same well too much?
I agree with you i like it deserve better reviews but its not problem for me
Are these low scores from the same people that gave Season 2 high scores? If so I question their credibility
A game where you get to play as Michonne has not been done before.
The ones I've been seeing are people who dislike this mini-series purely because it's not Season 3, which is quite sad in my opinion, the game has improved and tells an original story for a main character in the franchise. But people will always have opinions, so there's not much point in arguing about them, it's still a 10/10 for me.
Can you post the reviews? I've never followed the comics, so I really wouldn't know. I just would like to see their reasoning behind it.
It's a solid 9 out of 10 on steam with over 600 reviews.
Unsurprisingly enough, yes, it's from them.
Steam reviews isn't a reliable source in term of scoring, since it only measures the amount of Positive reviews in comparison to the Negative reviews, but not the actual individual score found in all reviews given by users, which they do not provide.
A single random Positive review can mean a score between a 5 and a 10 out of ten.
I know that, you're kind of not getting what they mean by saying its been done before
Most people are fine with it, just reviewers are going to start giving them scores of 6 or 7 most of the time compared to the 8 or 9 scores season 1 got. Thats just because back then it was new and unique. Future content either has to do more or something higher to get top scores. To be honest most people dont care about reviews and a 7 isnt a bad score anyway, its a good rating. Just not great
It deserves 4/10 in my opinion
It felt very SHALLOW in my opinion.
There was nothing stupid about it, but it just was not at all COMPELLING and it did not leave me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next episode.
So I am left with a meh feeling.
No surprise there.
What would have made it compelling for you?
What I find ridiculous is that these so called 'critics' are completely biased. If they give this Episode a five out of ten, then they should give every single Episode of Season 2 a three or a four. But no, it's a TWD game by Telltale, better post some shit like 'so emotional' and 'still crying', so that all the bandwagon jumpers will praise me. You can almost taste the corruption. A game like TWD (Season 2) is completely overhyped? Better shower it in awards. A game like Michonne that many people shun just because it's not Season 3 (great 'fans' who do this btw)? Can't have good reviews for that!
It just goes to show that big review sites are nothing but tools nowadays. If you want an actual review, you'll have to look for smaller sites or just play it yourself. Sadly, with Telltale's TWD you also can't ask the fanbase because it mainly consists of bandwagon jumpers who will be toxic towards anything that isn't TWD Season 3 and will always tell you how great Season 1 and 2 are and how they are beyond any game that comes out nowadays blah blah stfu, I hate this kind of blind fanboy talk. Sorry for the rant, but this seriously pisses me off about this fanbase.
When you don't put any depth into a sentence such as "It's been done before" without giving an actual explanation for saying that, how can one know what whoever they mean? If we're going to talk about what's been done before - well - I can say that about most games that have been released in the last few years - doesn't make it a bad game and I don't think it's a fair reason to rate a game lowly, because you're judging it not based on the actual content but the originality of it, which is something that lacks in allot of games today that still managed to get high scores.
honestly, I was just mostly bored playing this episode. As I said in another thread, I also did not particularly like the characters or cared about what happened to them, be it Michonne herself or the siblings. I also did not like how they handled the controls on this one - just hit E or Q when prompted and you are good. You dont have to aim and make sure you hit the mark. But yeah mostly I was just bored and did not care about what was gonna happen. I was far more excited about and invested in the characters and storylines of 400 Days than this one. I give it 2 out of 5 or 3 out of 10.
I rated 1/5 on ps3 because despite being broken and not downloading and it being a known issue in europe, TT still took my £12 without warning of the bug and I've been waiting 4 days for something I've already paid for. Wouldn't have been so harsh but £12 is a lot for a miniseries, especially one that doesn't actually work.
The whole entire opening to me was completely bad ass. I like the fact that Michonne constantly see's her kids or is reminded of them from various things. The style and how things are presented is way different then the previous TWD games.
The relationship with Greg and Sam could have been made stronger. The relationship with the other characters too could have been a little bit more defined too. That is why I personally gave it a 8/10 because it excelled in other areas besides that.
Something that would have made me think it was awesome. I don't know.
Out of all the reviews I've seen, the main consensus among critics is that they thought the story was pretty weak compared to some of the other games. That's a fair criticism in my opinion and I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that the game isn't Season 3.
I loved the first episode personally. It's not without its flaws, but it still proves that Telltale still has what it takes.
It was kinda short, but still pretty good in my opinion. I'd give it like a 7 or 8.
Personally I liked it, but it was on the short side. I played through 2x right after I got it and will do a third (this time I'm not going to speak at all when prompted). Most of the bad reviews I saw were simply based on length vs cost. I didn't have too many lags, but it did close the game both times at the same point, when Randall was taking Michonne and Sam away to be tied up in the storage room. But it loaded right back up where it left off when I reopened it. Maybe I enjoyed it more and are less critical because I'm a WD newbie. I just started watching the show this year on Netflix, but I do love Telltale games. I like the idea of choices. I started with Wolf among Us and after that I got as many others as I could.
So, something flashy like a big reveal or a cliffhanger?
Probably. Fact is I have only played through it the once and have no desire to play it again anytime soon.
TBH I'm just happy we got more TWD, 11/10 from me, okay episode.
I have to play it through again before I can make a judgement, as I went into this with lofty expectations due to the changes in Telltale's formula brought in by Minecraft: Story Mode, and was disappointed by the fact that it was like The Walking Dead: Season Two mixed with the presentation of Tales from the Borderlands.
But, that's just me hoping that it would be something that it wasn't, so I'll have to play through it again and judge it for what it is, in order to really know what I think about it.
I dont get that, so an okay episode for you gets an 11/10?
