A rant about Joffrey (NOT an appreciation thread)

I'm just gonna say this: we ALL hated Joffrey, myself included, but the actor was amazing. I mean, for a young guy like that, his character getting that much hate, he did a great job. And when S4E2 came, it was so satisfying to see him die, because he did such a great job getting a lot of hate. And again, Joffrey is a cunt, but the actor did such a good job. Anyone else agree?

  • While I hate Joffrey, I actually find myself missing him. I miss hating him and laughing at his stupidity. I love Jack Gleeson, he is a very good actor and I miss his and Charles Dance's presence in the show.

I miss Joffrey and Tywin, too. :(

There's a LOT of great antagonists in GoT: Viserys, Joffrey, Cersei, Tywin, Ramsay, Roose, Stannis, etc.

  • I was actually sad to see him go. I thought he was a great character.

  • I don't understand how Tywin qualifies as an antagonist. Everything he's done has been has been tactical and for the safety or prosperity of his family. Which is actually respectable at least imo

In books he's basically an asshole. He's more grey in the series.
After, I wouldn't say Stannis is an antagonist (even in the series) but I might be a bit biased on this question.

  • Well, he wasn't an antagonist until season 4. He KNEW Tyrion didn't poison Joffrey, but he sentenced him to die anyway. That technically makes him an antagonist.

  • Indeed he was. He was a cunt, but you need those kinds of characters.

How he treated Tyrion's first wife is kind of a dick move also.
Make your son watch your wife being raped by soldiers isn't that much family-friendly.
The way he treated Reynes and Tarbeck (killing even the children) wasn't that much a thing good people do. Neither smashing little Elia and Aegon for having Robert's trust.

  • She wasn't raped I don't think. She was given money for her "services". The Reynes and Tarbecks rebelled against them and started the war to begin with. I know this is definitely presumptuous but the Targaeryns have a history of being mad and had the been left alive they would most likely have enough claim to the throne to cause eve more war seeing as either could simply claim Robert's Rebellion was treason (which it was)

  • I think she was, but it depends on the material we're talking about. In the series her story is half mentionned.
Yes, Tarbecks and Reynes were traitors, it's sure but he also killed the kids and women. One can say it avoided a future rebellion, as letting Daenerys and Viserys will certainly make a new one.
He also did a walk of shame of his own for the mistress of his father.

For the smashed Targaryens.. Thinking about it, knowing Robert, someone else would have certainly done it anyway, and yes it allowed to bring, somehow, peace. The surviving Blackfyre led several rebellions indeed. Killing Elia Martell was totally unnecessary though. I won't saying he's totally black; as every character of asoiaf it's more complex than that; still these acts can make him look like an antagonist.

Joffrey suffered from the unfortunate fate of being stupid cruel and a coward. Wich is not a good combination. Not that i have a problem with cruel characters, most of my favorite characters in the books are cruel and merciless. But Joffrey did not have anything that made him interesting.

But Jack Gleeson did an amazing job, one of the few things that i think was really good about the show.

  • Agreed.

  • There is no antagonist in Game of thrones since there is no protagonist. Your list make it look like you assume Daenerys, Tyrion and the Starks ( maybe the tyrells as well ) are the protagonists, when really Game of thrones is trying hard to make every one important and complex.
    I don't know... I have to disagree.
It's not like you stated it as people who goes against the pov-characters in the two first books, you basically spoke about the Tv show... so... no
I would add that antagonist doesn't mean asshole, it means going against the main characters, but isn't Stannis the main character of his story ?
Also the closest of something we can call ''main character's'' are not all going in the same direction, just like the said antagonist ( Cersei, Ramsay/Roose, Stannis ) had a lot of screentime and are also against each other.

I have to say I am a trash for the Lannisters so yeah... the ''antagonists'' ( that don't exist ) aren't the same for everyone.

There's a LOT of great antagonists in GoT: Viserys, Joffrey, Cersei, Tywin, Ramsay, Roose, Stannis, etc.
