Not completed it yet, but I think its pretty awsome. I'm playing on 360, which I think is the format to get this version on. I mean, I've allready played the original Monkey Island on a computer (Amiga not PC, the best format ever!)

The game is obviously designed for the 360 more than PC. Also it has cool achievements. If you have the option, then get it on 360.

One thing that bothered me was that they seemed to have missed some animation out. Look at the candles in the church and the fire in meathooks as examples where it used to be animated, but now isn't!

I've just been there (I'm still strolling around and not really playing yet). The church looks really, really weird with the frozen flames. That's the kind of thing that QA should catch. There are a couple other weird places where frames are missing, like the guy who's selling maps: His eyes don't shift.

Not an animation, but did anyone else think the Tentacle idol in front of the monkey head looked pretty bad and out of place?

how do you give an object to someone or try?

My only problems are that they confused the icons of the PTA Meeting and the icon of the directions for Monkey Island.

The other problem is that they confused some lines about the pieces of eight are not right. (like when Guybrush needs to say that he got 137 PoE he says 371...)

We really, really need Captain Tripps back, don't we?

Getting Voices in the Old Version might be a little tricky, but surely Music isn't a problem if you run the original through ScummVM, just replace the original music files with ones from the new game, and hey, you're halfway there, new music in the old game. I'm sure someone will release a pack on the net soon enough.

Press Control+Alt. You get the verbs on the left and the inventory on the right.

Thanks but I can't seem to give things to ppl.. For example I click on give.. then select an item then click or try to click on lookout but he doesnt show up as clickable.

I find the interface annoying as hell, this game has nice presentation but the rest is not really workable to me.

No-one has even picked up on the only thing that annoyed me - the gaps between dialogue lines are too big!

It goes *line of dialogue* > *five seconds of silence* > *next line of dialogue*

I assume it's to let the text in the background original game catch up, but it sounds utterly ridiculous, completely unnatural. As for the visual side of things, I think it's perfect. Utterly beautiful, and whoever said that the hand painted backgrounds don't lend themselves to HD is a mentalist. =P

You can't try. Either you can give it, then the target will show up (like meat -> dog) or not, in which case you won't be able to select that target.

Grog puzzle on 360 was really awkward, I switched to classic mode to complete it, I wasn't fond of opening inventory, selecting Use with d-pad, selecting the full grog, reopening inventory, selecting empty mug, and then finally hitting use.

I didn't find this a problem. Infact, the only time I had control problems at all was when you're off to Monkey Island and have to light the cannon, select the helmet and use it on the nozzel.. But even then it wasn't too bad.

No lip movement on the closeups was definitely a little odd, perhaps that was done on purpose to keep it like the original, but I do think it felt a little awkward.

And again, I don't really understand why we couldn't have had an option for VO's with the original graphics.

I actually mentioned this in another topic, so yes, I definitely agree. I didn't notice it so much when I started playing, but to begin with at least, it felt very odd.

Well the audio is tied to the text speed of the original playing in the background, so go into classic mode and adjust it! ;) Not sure about the 360 but on the PC it's +-

Doesn't work, that was the first thing I tried. :(

Edit: That may have been a lie. I've just tried it again and it seems to be working!

Ok, regarding New Music in the Old Version, it depends on what people prefer.

SFX or No SFX, these were done from the 360 version by the way.

Just press ctrl + alt and both the verbs and inventory appear on the screen at the same time. It runs exactly the same. And I don't focus on the circle, I always focused on the pointer next to the circle, so I don't get where you're coming from.
  • edited July 2009
The verbs and inventory is extremely annoying, had a much better experience after learning the keyboard shortcuts for everything.. o = open , p = pickup , g = give etc.( only thing i hate is that i cant move the inventory to another spot on the screen , its in the way alot of times )
  • edited July 2009
Wrote a little script that at least makes the control halfway bearable for me. It opens verb list/inventory when you touch the bottom of the screen. Left for verb list, right for verb list+inventory.
  • edited July 2009
Main thing that bugged me was that, in the 360 version, important verbs like "give" and "use" are mapped to the unfortunate diagonal corners of the 360's wonky d-pad. Just made things a little less convenient than I would have liked

If you want to skip dialogue lines you can hit f10 to go into the original version of the game, where the period key will still skip lines. When you have skipped through the dialogue you were hoping to miss you can hit f10 again to return to the new game. The spoken soundbites all play at once on top of eachother, but that ends pretty quickly.

Anyone know how to change the subtitle language for the PC version, by any chance?
  • edited July 2009
The timing between lines bugs me a little too.... so far I haven't had a problem with any of the voice actors, but the narrator does bug me. I never thought "Deep beneath Monkey Island..." etc. would need to be dubbed into a theatrical trailer-style voice. I mean, if someone isn't saying it aloud, it should just appear on the screen as a subtitle without voice, right?

It would have worked better if Guybrush was reading those. He does read from his Journal a few times in the later games.
  • edited July 2009
I must be the only person that likes the narrator.

Anyway, whatever the case, it wouldn't work if Guybrush read them. He's supposed to be completely oblivious to these things going on away from what he's doing.
  • edited July 2009
the only thing that buged me about the narrator is his voice seemed too loud compared to the other voices!

how do you adjust the text speed?

Press F10 to go into old mode, then keep hitting the + key to increase text speed.

Press F10 to go back into new version, no more pauses between dialogue. :)

This also answers the guy who posted straight above me.

Just wondering, when you go to the circus, did you get cut off in mid sentence when you choose your first line, i chose "im selling these fine leather jackets" but all he got out was "im selling these fine" and then he got cut off, when the brothers started talking.

Yes, and I guess this is how it is meant to be. The Fettucini brothers won't let Guybrush finish his sentence, eager as they are.

So this did happen, just wondering because i found some videos (the videos are previews) of this scene on youtube, and Guybrush does finish his sentence, unless it was a last minute addition.

    here is a video: here

if i choose the same line as the one in the video Guybrush doesnt even get half the sentence spoken.

Well, the things that have bothered me were posted:

    - No way to skip dialogue
    - Choosing a text in a dialogue doesn't always work, you need to sometimes click beneath the text to choose it.

But moreover, I encountered a bug with Otis.
When he gave me the carrot cake, it didn't appear in my inventory, even if I switched to the old version.

Ugh... I was really enjoying the game. It was running remarkably well on my computer. Well, it runs really well up until it suddenly and inexplicably cashes right at the start of Part 2. Does anyone maybe have a save game right at the beginning of Part 2 I could try or something? This is really annoying.
  • edited July 2009
My biggest irritation after playing some more is that on some occasions the new art doesn't line up with the old art, so hovering over doesn't register the intended pixel. Also, in a few instances they didn't quite draw the intended art well enough (where it was hidden behind characters or more obscure looking than in the classic version).
  • edited July 2009
The artists who worked on this game seems to have been... in a rush. I love the new added voices, and the soundtrack is gorgeus, though sometimes new takes on the songs seem a bit forced. But, the graphics... whats up with them. I don't mind the new style, but it's just so sloppy. I don't feel the love I did in CMI. Shaky heads and oddly shaded characters and enviourments. Poor animations and pixelated backgrounds showing behind the new backdrops. I doesn't feel like the artists were getting into this seriously.
  • edited July 2009
I loved it, mostly because of the voices, the fancy graphics I could have taken or left. They did grow on me though and work better on Monkey island where things are generally more zoomed out. But it's all about the voices, with the subtitles speed at max everything is just that much funnier and more charming.
  • edited July 2009
Okay, this game definitely did seem rushed. It doesn't seem like they drew the backgrounds with the original intention to build the game on top of the old one. There are parts where you can walk on the background in a spot which logically isn't physically possible because the new art is changed in such a way that doesn't match the old version.

Also, if you observe some backgrounds, there are pixels from the old backgrounds in some places. It's REALLY noticeable in the Melee Island forest, and one of the backgrounds has this weird double effect at the bottom where it appears they just quickly and really badly copied the bottom half of the screen and pasted it below the bottom of what was there to make the scene size bigger.

You know the conversation with Stan on the dock? His arms go flying in front of Guybrush in a way that breaks physics, and it looks real bad. The layering is way off and Stan should be on the other side of Guybrush. Not a hard thing to do. I'm really shocked they missed so many things, just like this one.

When you're talking with your crew on the ship, Otis's head is sometimes facing the wrong direction when Meathook and Carla are talking. In the old version, when Carla talks, Otis looks at her (right). When Meathook talks, Otis looks at him (left). In the new version, it's the opposite. Meathook (right, so looking at Carla instead of him), Carla (left, so looking at Meathook instead of her).

This is really just a gripe about the art, but the overhead art when Guybrush goes down into the crack on Monkey Island to get the oars.. it looks really bad. Heck, here's a real complaint about that part I almost forgot. The animations of him climbing up and down the ropes cut out a ton of frames. Just switch to the original, climb up and down, then switch to the new one and climb up and down again. He's just sliding up the rope at one point.

I can't remember any other similar annoyances to these. I think that was about the worst of them that I noticed. Sure, there were issues I had with the strange decisions in art design, and I'm not even talking about Guybrush. His hair is one thing, but what the hell, he's not supposed to have long sleeves. Even in the close-up of him holding the navigator's head, it's back to short sleeves. I think that about wraps it up from what's still fresh in my mind.

I'm totally convinced that the artists left in those few background pixels on purpose, they're hidden all over the place, I actually enjoyed hunting for them

Yes, I thought the same thing! It's very funny because when you press f10, during the transition, these pixels remains the same!

Absolutely the same most of the time, not the slightest change in size, position or colour (on a 4:3 screen).

Did anyone notice that some Lemonhead´s lines were cut?
Or maybe its a bug on my version?

But after you gave the cannibals the idol, Lemonhead should say something like: "Oh its nice. Its simple.Like mine. And its small. Like mine. And it says Made by Lemonhead Just like one of mine!"

Insted, in the SE he just say "Oh its nice. And it says Made by Lemonhead Just like one of mine!"

All the pixels and flaws really bugged me, but thankfully Hermna Toothroth was pretty awesomely designed along with the rest of Monkey Island, so when I got to that point I started to actually enjoy the game real good. :)

I think LeChuck's short arms (and really poor arm-swinging animation) along with Stan's new look is really cheap. Just running into Stan seemed to slow the tempo in this game for me. Looking at him made me feel bad. (Whats with the tiny body and the giant head which is obviously a caricature of someone?) Listening to him was just annoying. It makes me sad, cause Stan was my favourite character back in CMI.
