That'd be kind of awesome if an official remake looked like that. It'd mean that even the artists missed the little piece of string you're supposed to notice and pick up next to the skull on the table to the far left. :D

That Guybrush model's taken from the close-up on Phatt Island, right? :)

Well, I'd love to try and update the music for Monkey Island 2. I thought some of SMI:SE's tracks were a little too hollow though the the instrument quality was perfect.

This is what I would try with this swamp location.

    this was the original:

    The Swamp Orig.

And this is the remake I tried:

    The Swamp New

I tried to make it more like CMI... Sounds a little better.

The swamp theme in MI2 was already remade in CMI style (which makes sense since the remake was IN CMI) for the Voodoo Lady's other swamp place on Plunder Island. It's the exact same theme:

    CMI: The Swamp Part One

    CMI: The Swamp Part Two

The one you made wasn't bad, though.

There was a few themes from MI2 that were remade for CMI including Stan's theme and the cemetery theme.

Good work! Say, you haven't done the same to the Phatt Governor's theme? This is the second best villain theme in the entire series and one of the most awesome tunes to boot. ;)

I really didn't do much to it MusInsp. I just updated the instruments and added a ghostly sound and a little harpsichord. Trust me, after I was done I knew it was close to the Voodoo lady and was a little dissapointed by that. But it is differant. Hey, it's just another song to have I suppose... This wasn't like my Flotsam song that I composed and added Monkey Island notes after.

Oneman, I'd love to try and update the song... It sounds rather difficult but I'll do it.

Yeah, I don't know why they didn't use it in more than one scene. That Guybrush looks great!

What would be ideal would be if LucasArts could bring in Steve Purcell and Peter Chan to work on the concept art. For the game to work in HD, they're going to have redesign and repaint all the the characters and backgrounds, but it would be really great if these new designs could come from the game's original artists.

So I really, REALLY hope Lucasarts does MI2:SE more like CMI.

God no. CMI was the ugliest of MI concerning characters. They need to do it like the first one, but without the silly character designs. GuyBrush in MI2 looks like he´s been through some adventures and looks like a half decent pirate instead of a gay swashbuckling idiot.

yeah this looks really nice. But I would love to see if you add some edges in Guybrush's face to create an older looking Guybrush.

If they could leave the character models in their original form rather than the stuff they did with the character models in TSOME, then I'd actual consider buying it. I already have the original but who cares? It's Monkey Island for God's sake!

Eddie - The characters were not ugly. I was talking more about the coloring style. The SE Guybrush looked bad.
Since the main reason you don't like CMI is because you are homophobic, I will try not to elaborate, because I might explode.

Yeah really whats up with the homophobic comment?

Unless you are trying to say Guybrush looks happy you need to strike that word from your vocabulary, I think its just as bad as using racial slurs..

I used to use that word too to say something negative but then I worked with two gay men and they were really nice and cool guys who I consider friends so I do not use that word any more.

Im not picking on you im just telling you maybe you should use a different word.

I'm pretty sure it was more in the line of "He looks like a flamboyant homosexual", which doesn't exactly suit his character. At least, I think that's what was meant.

Hate to go off topic like this, but considering how people use the word "Gay" so casually and derogatorively (that's a word, right?), I wouldn't just go around using that word casually without clarifying. And I am 99% sure that he's a homophobic *censored*.
  • edited July 2009
Mmm, doesn't gay mean happy too? Maybe, just maybe he meant that he looked too casual, like a weak wimp, not heroic enough. I wouldn't never call a guy married to Elaine homosexual. Anyway let's try to not make offensive comments to anyone.

Anyway back to topic, Monkey 2's Guybrush is for me the definitive Guybrush, which sadly Lucasarts didn't continue using in next games.

Thankfully Telltale came back to that superior look in TOMI.

^ Grrr... First time I got pissed off on teh webz, believe it or not... :D
    EDITED OUT
I'll probably redo the face though...
But I'd like to see something vaguely similar in the special edition of MI2.

They must do that. MI:SE was so awesomely faithful to the original that I can't really think of something better that could happen to the MI series right now: MI2:SE

Not to be a downer or anything, but I don't really like the mock-ups.

Its OK you don't have to... Thing about art is its not supposed to be liked by everyone... in fact sometimes artist try to get gut wrenching reactions out of people to get in their face..... For example picasso, brilliant art but you can not tell me he made his abstract stuff with "everyone" in mind

But of course you wouldn't want to do that with something as commercial as a video game... So my whole point is.... pointless LOL

    That.

I have several gay friends and they arent´t offended by comments like that. Everyone is sure offended easily over here. It seems trying to be funny doesn´t work so I´ll apologize.

Now really, I found the environment art in SoMI: SE to be top notch. My real only problem with the new art direction was Guybrush's hair. I mean, seriously? His original hair was fine, the new hair makes him look like an asshole.

This is an actual screenshot of the Monkey Island 2 Special Edition - Yep, it's already out guys. LucasArts have been really quiet about it though.

Image removed because it was eating my bandwidth.

For those of you who have trouble with sarcasm:
Monkey Island is special enough as it is. Voice is the only improvement it needs.

Eddie - Apologies. Xbox LIVE frequenter, and as much as I consider the word "gay" to not be an insult, "gay swashbuckling idiot" got my anti macho self very paranoid. The number of times I just quit multiplayer matches is not small by any stretch of the imagination... Though I can see how the SMI Guybrush looks gay...
Once again, I apologize... Can we be friends now? :D
People seem easily offended here? Well, the gaming community isn't exactly known for being very open minded about sexual orientation, and when someone posts a comment that could be mistaken to be homophibic on a site like this, well - You see what happens.

BTW I just looked at my own mockup - damn it looks like total crap now. The neck is horrid, I can't believe I didn't notice! Stupid monitor/TV. I'm takin it down.

TheJoe - Unfortunately, considering the amount of money Lucasarts have made off of the first one, they definately won't leave MI2 alone.

Companies need to listen to fans, and fans need to learn that companies can do wrong.

The initial reason why we all loved the Special Edition when it was first announced was because it was Monkey Island. A name we love. And we got the idea that LucasArts could do no wrong.

They can do wrong. And they did. I don't want MI2 to be ruined like that.

Then don't play the special edition. The rest of us will be enjoying the quality product that is MI:SE while you fester in your little world of hatred and refusal to accept change.

Joe- I hear you at that, I would personally like it if they just re-released it with XP/Vista support on steam or whatever, but of course, Lucasarts isn't known for really listening to fans...
Pale- Without being offensive, you can either refuse to accept change, or just blindly accept change. Most of us aren't pleased with the art style of SE.

only few things i didn like about Monkey Island : SE is

New HUD, the old one is far superior, when you use it so much, its so annoying having to bring it back all the time.

The new characters look, they do indeed not fit with the enviroment, and looks like they are glued ontop, also alot of facial expressions are lost.

Yes, because liking a product must mean we are mindless fanboys. There is definitely no way that anyone could like anything that you hate.

I feel like I'm back on #gog again and having to give blowjobs to everyone because I offend them by not liking things.

Mostly by not liking Steam. That likened me to a "witch" in the Dark Ages.

I deeply apologise for having a mind of my own.

The only art style I have seen anyone really complain about is the way the characters look, and I agree they don't all look quite right, but as a whole, it's a great update to one of the best adventure games of all time, and the vast majority of the voice acting is really great.

Anyone who thinks it's a total abomination and worthless pile of cow dung just because they visually interpreted the characters differently than you would have preferred is being a bit dramatic.

Could the characters look better? Yeah, they could. The thing is, by the time Lucasarts found out that fans weren't entirely pleased with the character style, the game was a little over a month from release, a little late in the game to be redrawing every single sprite in the game.

I am willing to accept characters that look a little goofy in exchange for amazingly faithful high resolution recreations of the original background art as well as great voicework and music.

Sorry if that makes me a mindless drone.
  • edited July 2009
^ Nah, relax, opinions are opinions... Yeah I have to say, the backgrounds were nice, although a little rushed, but that's just nitpicking.

I think they tried too hard to be COMI and forgot about quality/unique style.

The voice acting was very dull too, there were only 2 good actors: Earl Boen and Dominic Armato.
  • edited July 2009
From the voices I heard, I thought the actors were perfect and very enjoyable and decent.. Dull is the farthest thing from it. What do you expect from voicework, anyway? Fans really can have rediculously high expectations for things.

And if you don't like the prospect of more special editions don't play them! Or just play them in classic mode! Whats the harm to you of them simply existing?
