Real Choices, Real Change for Season 3

Season two was great but it did not add much new, and the choices seem to matter less than it did compared to season one. Everyone seems to be wanting the choices to matter more, and with season 3 coming that is the perfect time to do so. I heard that they were switching engine, and I hope that is true. I want TWD to come back big, with new exciting things!

  • Telltale mentioned that they're upgrading their engine for Batman, but I've heard nothing about that for The Walking Dead... maybe the poster got them confused?

  • Well its the same engine so if they're updating it for Batman they'll be doing it for TWD..

    BUT updating an ancient engine is NOT the same thing as 'switching' engine.

  • I seem to recall one of the mods clarifying it was just an enhancement or something, not Telltale Tool 2.0 (which honestly they need to make 2.0 a priority).

  • I'm pretty sure it's the system that carries the graphic models of characters and objects, the sound files, the coding for animations and commands, etc.

    I majored in games development, but it's been a while since I completed the course so I may be wrong.

    If Telltale Games ever upgrades their engine, in my opinion, characters being able to talk over each other without chopping dialogue would be a priority. I don't really remember, but I'm pretty sure that when Lee, Mark and Kenny go back to the Motor Inn with Ben, there's a lot of people talking, but it sound like they were taking turns to make such remarks as "what's going on," "what is this shit" and "are you okay."

  • The three year course was tiring, and at that point in time my interest in video games were declining due to how I realized that I either couldn't keep up with the newer generations and genre of video game, or I was simply too old fashioned and noticed the lack of games that kept the PS2 era diverse and alive.

    Now I just take an interest in fitness instructing and I plan to find a job in a gym. But once I get my spark back, I plan to start making games of my own, as I have several documents saved in my computer filled with ideas.

  • I think for that to happen there would be several sound files that would need to be coded to play out the entire file without being accidentally set on repeat or being interrupted by other sound files, and it depends on how much a system can play several in different instances without bugging out.

  • Wouldn't surprise me after some disagreed with the episode runtime being longer than 2 hours. Now 90 mins has become the more average playtime with walking dead games.

  • They usually do minor engine enhancements for each game, but they hinted that Batman would have significant enhancements. Kevin Bruner (Telltale's CEO) said in a Reddit AMA that Telltale doesn't label their engine upgrades with new numbers, so technically we won't see a "Telltale Engine 2.0" in name but you will see a pretty notable upgrade in Batman that might just be the Telltale Tool 2.0 that people want anyways. Time will tell.

  • You had 5 different endings based on your choices. I don't get this complaint.

  • Your choices not counting and giving you alternate endings doesn't count.

  • Telltale really needs to return to the style of season 1, its the game that put them on the map, and they strip that style down to appeal to a broader audience. Never mind that Walking Dead season 1 is probably the most successful game there company put out when it came out.

  • Yes they do, you get different interactions, and different characters will like you/dislike you depending on what you say, true the overall plot doesn't change like in Heavy Rain but your choices do matter. In season 2 every character treats you the same no matter what you do, there's some alternate dialogue, but not nearly as much, in fact a lot of the time there's scenes where you can say different things to someone, and not only do events happen the same way, but you also get the exact same dialogue. The alternate endings where the only time choices mattered in season 2, and it felt like they where only there to dispel criticism.

  • But that's a final choice. And all those endings negated all choices from the other 98% of the game. Only the last 2 choices mattered, as a result

  • Every telltale game does a variation of that. The choices dictate how the story unfolds and what your character becomes. We know this going in. TWDG honestly has the most variety in ending in all of the Telltale games I've played (I haven't played Minecraft or GoT though).
