Fear the Walking Dead: A show worthy of your attention or a coattail riding cash-grab?
At this point I think I'm officially a Walking Dead fanboy. I've read all the comics, novels, played all the Telltale games, watched every episode of both shows (including the weird little webisodes and such) and at this point I'm a little underwhelmed by Fear the Walking Dead. I'm not becoming invested in the characters and their struggles, and I find all of them except for Nick, Strand, and Salazar to be extremely bland. They're all too calm and mellow in my opinion: there isn't a reckless hot-head character to contrast them with. What do you guys think? What direction could the show take and what changes could it make to improve itself?

It's too cringey for me and I hate all the characters.
Salazar is pretty bland to me also.
Nick, Strand, Alicia and Chris have potential to be interesting if not really likeable. Ophelia and Daniel maybe
Madison and Travis are the worst though, bland and unlikable at the same time
I think it is boring compared to TWD
Travis is the worst. He's just... blahhhh.
...which already is Pretty boring, sometimes!
Daniel is badass. And why is Travis the worst? At least give him more time. Rick the badass we compare him with is still sleeping. he'll become interesting in a season or soo.
(?) Medium Fear The Walking Dead Spoilers!
I honestly consider the first five episodes bland, monotonous, boring and confusing, accompanied by a bit of bad acting and unrealism. But "Sicut Cervus" really changed my mind on the show, and now I believe it has the potential of becoming interesting. It could be because of the introduction of Celia; that other maid that will sure play a big role—I think she is portrayed by the actress who played that woman on "the Oath" webisode;—their alternative view on the walkers; the mystery surrounding the poisoning at the church—which will basically become the Mobjack massacre;—and the conflict between Chris and Alicia. All of that has really hyped me up.
Hes not really badass, hes just switches between sadistic torturer and lovey grandad.
Travis is whiny and irritating
I just watched "Sicut Cervus" (I had it DVR'ed). Best episode yet by far. Salazar is definitely my favorite character now.
They are both boring the acting is shit, the dialogue is like its been written by someone who has never conversed with another human and the combat reminds me of blackbelt OAPs, just going through the motions no skill just mimicry.
Fear is easier for me to put up with, the main show relies on the fact that people watching are already hooked so it just sort of goes on and on for no real reason. fear is establishing a new plot so I can choose who I like, in the main show they just think "everyone loves X" well I don't even know who the hell you are why should I give a rats ass. (I live with a fan)
they had a Latina queen of the Dead already on Z Nation, and plenty of cult shit, and drug shit too. If any of those are why you like FEar the walking Dead you will love Z nation
salazar is daniel I think
I'm trying to watch it. Though I feel like I'm forcing myself to watch it now rather than enjoying it.
I like FTWD. It's good filler to keep us occupied until TWD starts again. Madison gets on my nerves a lot. She's paranoid and bossy. Salazar...at times his coldness and paranoia are helpful, but I often dislike the way he handles situations. Like in Sicut Cervus when Luís gets fatally wounded. The man had one dying wish-for his token to be taken back to his mother and Salazar, because he doesn't agree with that superstition, just tosses it overboard--WHAT A DICK. The way he was snooping around the Abigail and disarms Strand's weapon when they had no reason to be suspicious of Strand. and acting like the map to Baja was something bad---did the rest of them have any ideas other than wandering the ocean until they ran out of fuel?
Did that coin have something to do with Salazar's past? He seemed disgusted by it. Also, how the hell did he get into America? I'm picturing him applying for a visa and putting "Torturer" down as his occupation.
I don't know if it had anything to do with his past, but I know there were references to the cult of Santa Muerte. When I looked up the religion, I didn't see any iconography regarding the owl, but typically in matters of the occult, the owl represents hidden knowledge; ya know, the idea that owls can see in the dark--thus the occultists know something others don't. But Santa Muerte itself isn't evil or anything if you actually take some time to learn about it. But it's very possible that the token does have something to do with his past.
I think Salazar and his wife got into the U.S. through seeking political asylum. But it coulda just been through standard immigration practices.
Those comparisons aren't very valid are they? They're nothing alike and Travis isn't the main character.
I liek it more than TWD due to havign no idea where the story could go, whereas specific parts of TWD are ALWAYS going to happen, like Negan's entrance etc.
I actually really like it. I prefer TWD but FTWD is pretty good.
Also Ophelia is the hottest chick to ever screen on TWD. Just saying.
Hell, half the time I find that I enjoy the plot of Z-Nation more than the MAIN show.
I went to high school with 10k, and honestly that was a big reason why I watched Z-Nation. But let's be honest the z nation plot is complete nonsense and there's nothing to watch anymore
I like how your title has nothing to do with your actual question
Never got around to watching it tbh.
I think it would be better if at least some of the characters were likeable.
I'm only halfway through the first season, man. I don't know, I kind of like it.
No season one wasn't bad. It's when you get halfway through season two that nothing makes sense anymore.
I think the show has some potential left, but I honestly think it'd be out of their best interest to avoid the idea of curing the zombie parasite/disease or whatever it is. If this is just a TWD that's about family and not always killing, then it's almost pointless to watch. Something happened and if it's not gonna be fixed in some manner, then why continue to watch insanity.
That's why I prefer GoT. It's not about what's better written or more true, but it's about having some sort of resolve. In both FTWD and TWD, it's not about actually stopping this zombie apocalypse, it's just about surviving until the next day. That's why it feels almost repetitive, because the story is about nothing. At least in GoT we understand that winter is coming, and they don't want to just survive winter but they want to stop and overcome it altogether. They don't want to live with the wights, they want to stop the apocalypse and move on.
If we are being honest, the Walking Dead franchise is in a sense a cash grab. I mean everything is. But more so than other shows because it's not supposed to (or it hasn't been decided when it will) end. So if you want to watch it, enjoy it. But yes it's a cash grab, and it's not the same level that TWD is.
But I like it
I watched the premiere. I just couldn't get into it. It was too much of a soap opera. The characters weren't likable. Also, it felt too politically-correct-on-purpose. Some might say realistic, but I think they were trying too hard. The mother married to the middle eastern guy. The daughter dating the black guy.
yeah Z nation is well worth the watch, its one of the only ZAs that make references to the fact that zombies exist in our popular culture. The plot is to get the one guy who survived multiple zombie bites to anyone who can synthesize a cure out of his blood. bomb that you went to high school with 10k he's quite a character. And its halfway through season two where they cross into mexico and start dealing with Zeros, who are lead by a queen and they're whole motif already is about being dead people. Plus at the end of season two the Chinese military show up because they are looking for the dude now. Its pretty good.
I thought a bunch of zombies were about to show up in GoT? so wouldn't that be considered a cash grab? suddenly adding zombies into a completely different type of storytelling all together? and as far as resolving a world wide epidemic, how? Aids is still as prevalent as it was twenty years ago, and thats with all of our functioning society working against it. to think that an ex cop and a couple school teachers are going to resolve something as big as the ZA is ridiculous. If ninety nine percent of the world population is suddenly walking corpses, many having been bitten and with other serious wounds; how can you cure a gaping bite hole thats been exposed to air and bugs and whatever the zombie bumps into? curing zombies is the worst idea possible didn't you ever read The Monkey's Paw? you can do nothing but wait until they have all rotted or been piked. Did you like the World War Z movie, because it sound like you would.
That's a good point you bring up, and maybe I'll have to check Brad Pitt out.
But what makes TWD more of a cash grab to me is that it's along the lines of a zombie soap opera that has no calculated ending, while at least GoT we know the show is almost over.
And if we're being honest, in reality most of the walkers should've rotted away to non-threat mode at this point. It's been a good amount of time.
"The mother married to the middle eastern guy. The daughter dating the black guy." How is that too hard? That's normal .-.
You do know that Travis isn't Middle Eastern, right?
(You are referring to Travis?)
I'm referring to this kinds of relashionships being normal, not to Travis being or not a Middle Eastern :P
