Monkey Island Madness! MI reborn appreciation thread

Wow - I'm serious about this, MI is back but it's not like back like it was before in the 90s.. it was still a fairly niche style game back then with a nice following, but now we have the old followers and other new adventurers that have emerged since the 90s LA/Sierra etc heyday through other games AND on top of that we have even brand spanking new 2009 adventurers jumping aboard and realising there is something to adventure gaming!

The reviews for the TTG games I pretty much expected after playing it, very high and responsive/encouraging. A couple of weeks on and LA's remake of SOMI arrived and I have to say it was pretty excellent, most people enjoy(ed) it (still playing myself)- but go check the scores at metacritic; it's one of the highest scored games of the year, like TOMI. (overall, which is the criteria metacritic.com use - they take all reviews from sites etc and add them together for an average then give that average a rank in top x for the year).

Metacritic reviews for SE:SOMI/TOMI (remember TOMI is for one episode only and will be a while until the whole season 1 is weighed up.. hmm only season 1.. like the sound of that :p)

What the heck is going on here???

6 months ago MI was nostalgia, now it's gaming headline news and top reviews and selling like hot cakes. This is fantastic!!!!

(I know this has been sporadically covered in other posts, but this is a post to celebrate the incredulity of it all - the pure whoddathunkit? I have to admit I still find it very hard to believe, yet some of us perhaps knew this could happen but even at that push could never have expected a double barrel MI assault from 2 software houses simultaneously, surely?).

Somehow all this should lead to an epic "TOLD YOU SO!!!" aimed squarely at LucasArts. Mature, no. Satisfying? Could be. Yes, my fondness for nostalgia is being taken advantage of, but I don't care.

I'm on my way now to go get the SE of MI1 from Xbox Live. If support is really as big as it seems, it may just lead to some other releases and other TTG revivals. I'm certainly doing my economic part to help that out.

You are totally right - many had said it for ages. I read somewhere that somewhere in the respective company echelons (ok LA) there had been some HR changes which galvanised this new interest at least on the remake side of the franchise. Not sure how true, but keep it up whoever you are, should you exist!

Meanwhile, we all anticipate the newer side from evolving MI from TTG. Long wait, but worth it.

The great thing is LucasArts didn't think this would work, but they gave it a shot, and now it's blowing their expectations through the moon.

I hope their stuffed shirt directors were wearing diapers.

This is very true. There have always been fans of the old games working at LucasArts but the big difference now is that the new president is also a fan :D Whereas, the last couple of Presidents have been like George Bush - tossers. They were quite clearly just squarely in the 'market share', 'profits' etc. camp and not at all in the 'we love game', or even 'we like games' camp. Good riddance to bad eggs.

This is great news... but I honestly think ToMI should have scored higher than the SE.... Although it does have the old version of the game included.

This whole Special Edition business could draw mainstream attention to new kind of adventure games such as ToMI, Sam & Max or SBCG4AP which is super positive for all of us. More revamping to old series, long awaited remakes or new entries in god-forsaken franchises could follow this Monkey Island madness.
