Dominic Armato Appreciation Thread

edited September 2010 in Tales of Monkey Island
We've had some threads for "thanks" for the game, to the designers and even the lab puzzle. But there really hasn't been one for the person who re-voiced Guybrush Threepwood - the same guy who answered every question asked in the private pirate forum on this forum!

Having played the first episode of Tales and through MI:SE, I went back and tried to play MI2. MI2 is my favorite Monkey Island game and I've played it a billion times. And I was reading the dialog and something just felt missing. So I decided to turn off my favorite adventure game and wait hopefully for the day it gets a special edition. For me personally, Dominic has definitively stamped himself onto the character of Guybrush Threepwood and I can't imagine a Monkey Island game without him. MI2 is still my favorite adventure game even without him doing the voice over, but it just feels out of place now in some way now that every other game has been voiced over.

Dom did a great job in both Tales and MI:SE. My appreciation of the game was greatly enhanced by his work. I'm glad he came back and did both games.

Anyway, thanks Dom.

I know it. The amount of time he put into answering all those questions in the Private Pirates Forum, and the fact that he didn't get freaked out by us somewhat freaky Monkey Island nerds, was really great. He really is a nice guy who is a little overwhelmed by this large fanbase. It's as if he became the captain of the Enterprise and went to his first Star Trek convention. Dominic definitely deserves the gratitude and appreciation he gets. I'm trying not to sound like a suck up, but it's hard because I really do appreciate all the time voice actors put into their roles; but to put so much time in for the fans is just something fairly unheard of outside of conventions.

yes, the whole monkey island madness mania that is back wouldnt be the same without him, i was already satisfied when i first heard that he will do the voices

he and other actors are about the main reason to play special edition

I do not understand why we are not hearing him in all sorts of stuff... he should be cast in everything he is a very talented dude.

When I first started posting here, I will admit I was in extreme shock and made some disturbing overly emotional posts and went with overkill with my appreciation. Probably to the point of awkwardness for everyone involved. >_>

And yeah I guess this is kind of a "suck up" thread but, who cares?

    Definitely.

    Thanks, Dom! :)

Answering our questions is something not even Chuck Norris would do. Shows he has balls.

Thank you Dom for your amazing vocal chords...
    That came out wrong.

Definitely - keep up the great work. I never really liked the "talkie" MI3&4 games, having grown up on the text adventures, but I think that was probably because I had the misfortune of playing them dubbed in German. Dom's the perfect Guybrush!

    Dom FTW!

He answered everyone of our questions.

    Even the stupid ones.

    What celebrity does that?

Only the coolest I say. Thanks Dom.

xD he is truly awesome ^_^

thank you Armato! Here's your prize!

... oh dang it. Don't have one. Just take this virtual cookie. :D

Yea he does a great job on these games, couldn't imagine any other voice for GT, he is the heart and soul of that character.

Keep up the good work dude!

He's fine, but its not like he is unreplaceable. The German Voice of Guybrush in CMI sounds pretty much like him too.

Still, always fine to see the original cast to be on board though. :)
  • edited July 2009
He's the man and unreplaceable in my humble opinion. He even made me abandon my idea of Guybrush being a Brit.

Are you german? I presume if your already used to hearing GT with a different voice then he wouldn't seem irreplaceable.

I'm sure they would have still made the games without him but they would not have been the same. Dom's voice was the first thing that confirmed that Tales was a true MI game to me.

He should cook us a Monkey Island themed feast.

Not one game previous has really made me laugh like Monkey Island so thanks Dominic :)

There could be no other Guybrush than him!

And might I add he's great in Monkey Island Special Edition, too- "My name's Guybrush Threepwood, and I wanna be a pirate!" sounded exactly like it did in my head so many years ago. *aaah, nostalgia*

Yes, my mother language is german. I played CMI in German, i yet have to try out the original version. But i can tell you that the german voice is very very close to Dominics. Matts Voice even sounds a tad better then Dominics, if you ask me. But they are both very good.

    German Intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1pXHhrToLw
    Original Intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHpvXyk-0nk

    Voice in Game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmoDpt4dphY

That´s why i said, he´s very good at what he does, but i dont think there is no english voice out there in the world, who couldnt sound very similar to him. The German Guybrush is done by Norman Matt , by the way.

Thanks Dominic, You're the best voice actor in existence. And Guybrush wouldn't sound right with any other voice.

Of course it sounds better to you, you're German! Just like Spaniards say the Spanish voice for Guybrush sounds "better" as well.
  • edited July 2009
Yes, sure. But you have to admit they sound very similar. There are translation where you can really say that the voice doesn´t fit the character, that´s not the case here.
  • edited July 2009
Perhaps it would be apt to point out that this is not a thread for "Which Guybrush is better" and more "This one specific Guybrush RuleS!"

To me that sound horrible and wrong in every way.. but if thats the voice you are used to I can see why you'd like it. Still no other Guybrush than DA for me.

    Hey, all...

Just wanted to pop in to say thanks. I've said it before, but it's no different now -- it's an honor to be able to work on these games, aaaaaaaand more than a little intimidating. I was a rabid MI fan long before Curse came around, so I understand how much you love the series and every time we work on a new installment, I know how important it is to get it right. It's incredibly gratifying (not to mention a big relief) to hear that you're happy with the result.

So thanks for the appreciation, and I'll continue doing my best to live up to your expectations :-)

Just curious what was your take on the ending of Lechucks Revenge when you originally played it?

Thanks Dominic, always great to hear your voice as Guybrush.

when I first played CMI, I don't know what I was expecting, but I didn't think Guybrush Threepwood was going to sound quite so ... ordinary. He sounded like someone I probably know. But as I played the game, I realized that was exactly what the character was about. He's this incredibly ordinary guy with delusions of piracy, and that's why we all love him. And Dom got that right from the start. Now I don't know what Monkey Island would do without him. Thanks, Dom!

You're a real class guy, Dominic. Thanks for posting and talking to us - it's really cool of you, they aren't paying you to do that. It's great to have a lead character who really cares about the series.

    Just kidding..

He's an exception to the rule because he's normal.

I've been playing MI2SE, and I just have to say...

SPOT ON, DOMINIC! I love his voice work in this game. It's wonderful and hilarious.

Thank you for all the hard work you put into these games, Dom! You are one of my favorite voice actors in video games!

I've said it in the other thread but I'll say it again here, Dom and Earl really made that end scenes of Monkey Island 2 brilliant, they played well off each other even if it wasn't recorded at the same time, just shows how much they know the characters now!
