How can I turn off characters' voices? (Season 2)

The first season of TWD had an option to turn off the characters' voices, but I haven't seen this in season 2 nor in many newer Telltale games. Does anyone know if there is any way to turn off the voices on the PC or Steam version?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the voice acting, but I am trying to use it for foreign language practice with subtitles in other languages. There is no use if I can still hear the characters speaking in English.

Thank you!

  • Season 2 and other Telltale series after Walking Dead Season 1 have had less options in their Settings menus, I assume with the intent of making things more accessible for their casual audience or something among the lines of that. (I am only a volunteer Community Moderator, I do not know for certain as I am not staff...)

  • Thank you for your response.

Do you know if there would be any way of doing this by perhaps removing some file from the game folder or something like that?

  • I don't know, and as a mod, I'm definitely not in the place to recommend or condone game modification. Unfortunately, I think the best course of action is to just tune out the English voice acting or mute the volume entirely. Actually, I'm looking a screenshot of Wolf Among Us' audio settings on Google (which I believe should share the same settings as Season 2 of Walking Dead) - perhaps you can try turning down the "Master Volume" to 0 and keep the music volume up at 10? I assume the Master volume covers all sounds and not just voice/any SFX besides music, but I suppose it is worth a minor shot.

  • Thank you Blind Sniper. Unfortunately when I set the Master Volume to 0 it also mutes music (even if you leave the music value at 10). So far the only option would be to play the game without sound. I hope there is a way to just mute the voices while leaving the music and FX sounds intact.

  • Thank you for your answer. I could mute just the voices in Season 1, while leaving Music and FX intact. However, in Season 2 you have to set the master volume to 0 in order to turn off the voices, but unfortunately that turns off Music and FX as well.

  • I think, theoretically, there might be a way to mute the voices, whilst keeping everything else.

Let me emphasize again though, this is just a theory. I don't know if it would actually work, and I don't have the time to try it for myself at the moment.

In Telltale's games, all the game files are managed by separate archive files (.ttarch or .ttarch2): textures and meshes (txmesh), data (data), animations and chores (anichore), music and sounds (ms), and voice (voice).

For Steam, these files are located at Steam\Steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack.

So, if the voice archive file was to be used by a third-party program while attempting to play the game, it would theoretically stop the game from accessing the archive, effectively muting the voices.

Again though, this is just a theory, and it's a bit complicated, but if you're that willing to jump through a few hoops, you could try this and see if it works.

I imagine the easiest way to test this would be by using the Telltale Speech Extractor, since that can open the voice archives directly.

If you were to launch the extractor, choose the episode you're about to play for extraction, then launch the game, the game wouldn't be able to access the voice archive, since it's in use by the extractor. It's a very crude way of doing it, but it could possibly work.

  • Thank you so much Deltino! I will try this.
