Javier is Luke 2.0

The goody two shoes with a tragic backstory and a heart of gold. It isn't necessarily a bad thing, per se, except that he's as boring as white bread. Nothing about his storyline was remotely interesting, it's all a 'been there, seen that' feeling. Seeing his niece get shot was only a mild surprise, a bland 'Oh, how tragic' feeling, then it was gone. If this was my first TWD game (and, aside, why is TT catering to a 'new' audience and treating their loyalists like crap??), I guess that'd be a terrible scene, but c'mon. It's the third season in. We've got quite a large body count by now.

I only cared about seeing Clem again, then Kenny, and basically following Clem's every word. Javier and his painted on and occasionally glitchy beard is merely the avatar to that.

  • Heart of gold? He's trying to redeem himself from being a selfish air head celebrity back before the apocalypse started.

  • Pretty sure whether or not that's true is up to the player.

I feel like we got a lot of control over Javier's personality, and I love that.

And yeah, he's totally Luke 2.0 in my game. I need something to fill the hole in my heart that he left. This is the best I'm gonna get.

I've been following TWDG since the start, and that scene hit me hard as fuck. I was speechless.

    And therein lies the issue.

People were expecting The Walking Dead Season 3, starring Clementine. And that's not what this is.

If you wanted a Clem-centric game, Telltale has let you know from the start that you're gonna be disappointed.

They've said time and time again that this is Javier's story, and I'm personally glad that they chose to go in this direction. I'm loving Javier and his family so far.

Well, I haven't been keeping up with the news at all. I watched one of the trailers, but that was it. and I could've sworn I read somewhere that the story belonged to both of them.

And, sorry, but the decision to sideline Clementine, after building her up for two entire games now, is beyond stupidity. If Kenny is the soul of the series, then Clementine is most definitely its heart. She's the one you protect the most in the first game, then further develop her in the next. She's the one we have the most emotional investment in. Now they introduce this entirely new character, as cookie cutter as any 400 Days character, and probably wonder why people are upset.

That must be in ep2, which I won't get to until tomorrow. I'm only basing my opinion on the opening sequence (which was bare-bones gameplay; a couple of dialogue options then a full-on cinematic with no interaction from the player. Lame.)

Pretty sure whether or not that's true is up to the player. I feel like we got a lot of control over Javier's personality, and I love tha

  • FUCKKKKKKK!!!! I was hoping this wasn't the case. This guy was the only potential saving grace after the shit they pulled with Kenny and Jane. He looked and felt like Luke 2.0 in trailers and appearance but I was still hoping he would be an interesting character.

  • I like Javier. While no one can replace Lee (who needs a reference in S3) he's written as a pretty believable guy whose trying to redeem himself from neglecting his family. The character dynamic between him and Clem is pretty fun but moreover...

Clementine didn't seem to work out that well as the leading protagonist in Season 2. Her role as the deuteragonist in Season 1 however is what made her famous and so lovable in the first place. Telltale must be trying to repeat Season 1's formula:

Javier like Lee is an adult looking for redemption for his past misdeeds - and Clementine will be instrumental in this somehow.

Telltale will never make Walking Dead as a good as Season 1, I think that's obvious if we look at everything that came after it (what is this, the George Lucas effect?). But Season 3 is a marked improvement from the lackluster Season 2, at least in my book, its a return to form (like Force Awakens?) and so far it was yet to stumble.

  • Well, on a positive note, he's voice-acted quite well, and I actually managed a smile or two out of some moments. But overall, yea, he's just a stick figure to me. Whatever choice keeps him around Clementine (whom I actually care about and want to see more of) is what I pick.

Her story really reached its conclusion in Season 2, though. At least in my opinion.

You made the final decision as to who you wanted your Clem to be, and who you wanted her to be with. 'No Going Back' was pretty conclusive for her character arc.

I'm glad she's in Season 3 and I really like what they've done with her, but it could honestly manage without her. She's just not vital anymore.

  • So far, Javier seems to be more than just a Luke 2.0.

I even think that Javier is Luke done right, and what we should have had in Season 2.

  • Should've saw this coming at some point.

Pretty sure people were already making that connection early on and, if we were going by the first few scenes, I'd agree. However, unlike Luke, Javier has an immediate backstory, a family/cast of characters that help flesh him out properly, and a very personal motivation for doing things the way he has and will have done. Luke's main issue was that he was built up as this youthful "underdog"(compared to Carver and Kenny, anyway) who was seemingly invoking the "Ideal Hero" image in his attempt to help his friends and their family survive the horrors of the world and the tyranny of their despotic enemy but he never really got any definitive personal motivation, development, and even successes until the last few episodes. He was just this guy that every one in the group could look to as someone who can help/save them, someone Clementine could count to have her back, and, unfortunately, a guy who seem to play a Foil to the other main players Clementine, Kenny, Carver, and Jane without any unambiguous chance to be his own person of power, making them look better by seeming dorky, naive, soft, and world-weary without the other way around being completely applicable.

  • I find Javier to be an engaging character. Not so goody goody as Luke was...does have a back story...likable supporting cast...and has a good rapport with Clementine. I am still thinking a lot of this anger is from people who missed the entire leadup info that Javier was going to be the main protagonist this season.

The only thing I dislike about the season so far was the Jane/Kenny thing....everything else has been fun..and we have new characters who are genuinely interesting. Remember Season2 Cabin group? Telltale seems to have listened to the complaints about the lack of character development. Even the New Frontier are not all faceless goons who kill for shits and giggles...some are..some are just guys and gals trying to survive in a shitty world.

So yeah people can continue to be pissed about how TellTale is not doing things the way they had dreamed about for these past few years...but I for one do see a company actually doing things right for the most part...tighter narrative and more layered characters..oh and Clementine is a fucking awesome..so for me and I know for quite a few others...this is a journey that is well worth going on...handin hand with Clem and Javi.

  • He's just really bland.

  • he's that safe character protag that everyone does in videogames/films. basic. boring. does kinda cool stuff. all the girls love em. zzzzzzzz.
    but he's okay.

  • You don't have to play him as Luke 2.0. If you play him like a douchebag, he can be an insufferable cunt; worse than Lee and Clementine ever were.

  • At least Luke didn't make crap boner jokes. "Javi" is the worst and the only part of his character I liked was purposely failing his qtes to let him die

  • There's a reason they bundled two episodes together. Does having Clementine in a story obligate her to be the main character?

Take a look at Lee, and how Clementine performed as the deuteragonist and developed.

Take a look at Clementine in season 2, and how odd it was for so many adults to come to rely on Clementine, rely on her to conquer insurmountable dangers and jeopardize her life over and over despite there being so many viable adults around. She's not like Sarah was, no, but there was a definite over-reliance on a child to pull them out of the dregs. Of course Clem overcame those tribulations, and got the authority/recognition she warranted, but it was an odd dissonance with the cast.

Clementine might very well do best as the deuteragonist once more, and yes emotional development is strong, they're trying to create a new cast, a new main character and revitalize their series. I'd say let the story play out and develop.

Call out bullshit like Kenny and Jane, but acknowledge the hole they put themselves in with those branching paths. And realize it's not as bad as it could've been.

And look at the game with Clementine as a backdrop now and again. She'll come to the forefront, because they recognize her value, but give other characters a shot and chance to develop. There is more to the world than just Clementine.
