How i would've handled the situation of flashbacks.
Instead of just rushing the flashbacks and what happened to K/J I would've built on the suspense. Give us flashbacks of Jane and Kenny and our Clem interacting with them. Flashbacks taking place right after the end of season 2 A flashback or two each episode. Now, considering Clem is alone by the start of season 3, a lot of people would then be wondering. What happened to Kenny? What happened to Jane? Why is Clem alone? Build up the suspense with near misses and such round about Episode 3 and 4, and then reveal what happened to them in Episode 5. This way, we get our choices mattering from season 2 without them getting in the way of TTGs preferred ending (Clem alone, Jane and Kenny dead) And it wouldn't feel so rushed or out of character because of forshadowing.
Also, instead of this other guy being leader of the New Frontier, how about the character we abandoned in season 2 Episode 5. If not them as the leader then as part of the group. Then they could die in a redemption arc.
See TTG. Took me two minutes to come up with this. Took you 3 years to do a five minute flashback.
Also, If AJ still isn't speaking. I predict in Episode 5, at a moment of high drama, AJ will start to speak and Clem will have the choices of either abandoning AJ. If she leaves the child then Javier and co abandon Clem as heartless leaving her alone, and if we save AJ then we die and AJ goes with Javier and co.
