***** death scene *S3E1 spoilers*

I want to talk about Kenny's death scene because I'm still healing from it ever since I beat episode 1 last night.

Ok, first I wanna talk about the negative. I think they killed him way too quickly. I was prepared for him to die in episode 1, that wasn't the problem. My problem is that they pulled a major Omid and killed him in the span of 5 minutes. I was hoping for a long, emotional goodbye like in season 2. Now I'm aware that we did indeed get that if we kill him/leave him at Wellington in season 2, but considering I stayed with him all this time I was hoping his death scene in season 3 would've been on that same level.

That being said, the scene did make me bawl like a little baby. It was really nice to see him teaching Clem how to drive, even if I knew in the moment that it wasn't gonna last. As soon as Clem crashed the car and I saw Kenny on the street, I lost it. When he said he couldn't feel anything in his body, I was an emotional wreck.

Another thing I loved is that I'm glad Kenny went out like a hero. I was afraid they might rehash season 2's ending and have Clem have to finally put Kenny down for being "too broken." I'm on team Kenny and I don't believe he's a monster, so I'm glad they dropped that angle for his cameo.

All in all, the scene could've been done better, but what we got still broke my heart. Part of me wishes I stayed at Wellington, although I'm glad Kenny and Clem at least got a couple more years of (relative) peace together. Though I'm aware they won't (although I guess it's possible they'll bring the determinant characters back if they only keep them in short flashbacks like this one) I'd love if they did more flashbacks throughout the series to show what Kenny and Clem were up to between the ending of season 2 and the flashback in season 3.

  • I agree, except I didn't bawl like a baby. Don't get me wrong, I would have, but like you said it was far too quick of a death scene to really feel emotional about it, in my opinion. I was just left feeling frustrated that he got Omided. I was actually a lot more affect by Mari's sudden death than Kenny's.

  • Oh I totally agree. It just hit me hard that this is it for Kenny. I think in later playthroughs I'll probably get through it dry-eyed though, or at the very least only tearing up a little.

I am mad that he got Omided, but for what it's worth it could have been worse. We could have only had Clem mentioning to Javi that Kenny got killed by walkers.

  • just wondering, if you left Kenny and stayed at Wellington would we have seen him in S3, or could he still be alive?

  • According to the wiki: he's nowhere to be seen in the flashback

  • I'm entirely with you, but TTG and its bullshit 'Kenny Will Remember That' crap really felt like a slap in the face. I knew he was going to die, but then those lil markers brought me hope, just for a few minutes, that maybe we'll get more flashbacks... But, no. That was cruel. I've grown impossibly attached to Kenny over the course of the games, to the point where I think he's the soul of the series, and after S2's emotional ending (which TTG replayed with Clem & Kenny's VOs just two days past)... We get that mess of a death scene.

  • Yeah, I'd have loved if they had a "flashback storyline" so to speak sprinkled throughout the episodes that explained what happened to Clem and Kenny or Jane between season 2 and season 3 that eventually ended with their deaths. It wouldn't be too strenuous on Telltale since they wouldn't have to create 4 different games based on which ending you got, but rather just 4 different scenarios for a 10 minute scene each episode.

Maybe it's for the best that they didn't though. I know I would've been more invested in that than the main story. It would be like Assassin's Creed: Revelations. I genuinely enjoyed Ezio's story in that game, but (on my original playthrough, at least) I was playing mostly to get to the Altaïr segments. I could see the same thing happening here. I waited most of episode 1 in hopes of a flashback, then once it happened I kinda lost interest in the main story, at least until Mari got killed and the shootout began.
