I think Clementine ruins The New Frontier

Don't get me wrong, I like The New Frontier's story with Javier and his family. But i don't feel like this is the Season 3 of The Walking Dead i once knew. If this was a separate series like how Michonne was then i could accept how much emphasis there is on Javier and his family, but it's not. I appreciate Telltale trying to be creative but i wish they focused their creativity on actually making my choices matter from the last season. Everyone kinda expected Kenny or Jane to die either way because their fate was determinant, including me. If Telltale actually wrote a story where our choices affected us further than just a flashback, i honestly would have been surprised. When it comes to The New Frontier, i think the same story could have easily been told if they replaced Clementine with another random girl who no one knows, which is what this character is supposed to be to Javier, the one we're experiencing this story through. Because fans are so attached to Clementine, the choices they make are usually just because they want to be nice to Clementine, they're not thinking for themselves anymore. When i see the choice results at the end of the episode, most choices are usually picked either by nearly 100% of players or nearly 0% of players... and that's because of Clementine.

In the end, it's exciting to see how she's grown up and all... but i think Telltale could have made something really amazing if they really wanted to do so, with Clementine's story anyways. When i first heard you could control both Clem and Javier, i was thinking it would be the same mechanic as the one from Tales From The Borderlands. But nope, we don't even get that, just a few dialogue options in Clem's flashback and that's it.

  • Yeah, I had a similar thought. And they call it A New Frontier instead of Season 3, for Pete's sake!

  • Maybe we'll get a proper season 3 someday. Apart from one area where the frame rate went haywire, on a technical level it's probably one of TTs best releases. But I dragged myself through a good deal of it because it's just poorly thrown together. There's a very small chance it'd be something I'd buy if it wasn't TWD, and even then that's because I'm interested in the story that's been told throughout the last two games. The relationship with Clem was the sort of thing that was built from the ground up, as opposed to "here, this is your family. DO ANYTHING FOR THEM. Oh, there's Clem, we'll give her a few lines and have her walk around in the background. Enjoy Javis story!"

Honestly, the game has so far ended up being exactly what I was afraid it was. Essentially a new story in the same world, replacing the old and occasionally throwing a bone for older fans who want to see the main characters from previous entries. It's a soft reboot.

  • Id have to agree.

Clem feels SUPER shoehorned in, she almost feels out of place, shes just kinda there, plus the shitty flashbacks that Telltale pretended would "satisfy" older players. I feel like the whole story would work alot better if she never appeared.

  • I like seeing the older Clementine and her interactions with Javier, but I have to say I agree that it would have worked well to just have Season 2 be the ending of Clementine's story and have A New Frontier be just about Javier. I wouldn't go as far as to say she "ruins" the season however

  • Impo Clem is the only thing interesting in the story. Stereotype guy tries to safe the day.

I already seen dozen of brother was mean to me and mishandling his wife, wife falling in love with me, brother disapears and then comes back. Seen it before. Clem is the only reason of me still playing.

Even though they could have had Season 3 without here and just follow on her story in season 4, then I could have saved the money on season 3.

  • I don't think she ruins it, but I feel like that it's noticeable that Telltale has tried to put her into a story where she isn't needed.

I didn't feel that influenced by her presence actually, I made choices that fit with the character of Javier that I sensed to suit best, and they were not always in allignment with her.

  • Season 3 without Clementine?! You know what that means? Human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria!

Only person out of place in s3 is right now Jesus. Is he for comic fans or some higher purpose, no idea.
