A New Frontier

I honestly don't understand why some many people are having a problem with the new season. Just because we don't get to play as Clem? At least she's it in! I personally love the new season. I like playing Javier and going on a new journey with new people.

So what are some of your thoughts on the new season? Is it what you expected or no?

  • I love playing Javier and prefer him over clementine

  • I like it, there are some problems, but what the game does well, it does amazing, namely the character of Javier.

Off the top of my head, I think there are probably a few things people were annoyed with - the flashback sequences, the shorter lengths of the episodes, and either the fact that they want more Clem, less Clem (since many people end up picking choices tailored more towards her and not Javier's family), and possibly the rest of the characters. Personally, I don't mind them, but I know there are people who just don't really care all that much.

Other than some of those gripes, I like it for the most part. Seeing what communities are out there and how they're surviving is a nice touch, since a lot more of the survivors aren't really living like nomads anymore. And the fact that we're starting to see all of this negotiating along with groups trying to attack other communities is keeping it pretty fresh. Javier's a decent protagonist, too.

Honestly, I wasn't really sure what to expect when they announced that Javier was going to be the main character, but I'm leaning more towards the good side. It's just a little odd sometimes for me to go from playing as Clementine for a whole season, to having her being in the supporting role again.

  • For me, Im just over here wishing that Clem was just never involved.

  • I like it so far. The flashbacks don't deserve any forgiveness but I like the rest of this game

  • I'm loving it so far.

  • That's not why most people have problems with season 3

As with everyone else you are assuming people's reasons for disliking the season. For once I think I'll just list a number of things people have been complaining about.

    • Season 2 flashback. Let's get these out of the way. Regardless of what you think about the characters there is no denying that they are rushed and poorly made.

    • Hubs are practically non-existent. The only one with a proper puzzle was the one with the tow truck, and we already had that with Lee in S1. The very first one has nice pace to it though.

    • Clementine and especially Jesus takes away a lot of the dramatic tension. Jesus is alive in the comics and Clementine is Clementine, no one is worried for their safety.

    • Clementine wakes a bias in players. Even if you are not a huge gaping Clem fan you are still influenced by the past experiences. Even if you feel like she doesn't influence your chocies, she still influences the way you experience the story more than other characters.

    • Javier's family is a cliché fest. This turns some people off, the good thing is that the writing is decent and the characters are well acted and have chemistry.

    • Non-recognition of choices so far. Even if we exclude Telltales ignorance towards the Season 2 choices there has still been none that actually influence the story so far. We have yet to see if the shoot Conrad option will actually make a difference in the next episode. Regardless of when you leave Prescott you will always find your family, Mari will always die and Kate will always be shot. Regardless of what you do with Clementine's shootout Kate will always be alive when you return to Prescott and the New Frontier always shows up. Regardless of wether or not you give yourself up Conrad will always flip out on you. We are probably many that are hoping that our choices with Gabriel and David will have some payoff. So far only Kate and Clementine alter the experience even slightly.

    • Kate and Javier's romantic relationsip, I don't mind it personally but many people find it forced on you as a PC.

    • Horrible pacing. And this is one of the problems with the hubs. This season has been extremely action oriented. This would be fine in off itself, but the hubs role used to be to add exposition and give the player a breater. Now that there is hardly anything to talk to characters about in hubs the fast pace just keeps going.

    • SHOOT THE TRUCK DRIVER. WHY IS NO ONE SHOOTING THEM? WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO JUST RAM THE GATE UNOPPOSED!?!?!?

A couple of things. You decide if they are valid or not.

  • A lot of people take issue with the terrible flashbacks, the "Clem is a playable character" thing being for an extremely minimal amount of time, and the episodes themselves lasting a short amount of time. I think times a big issue with these new episodes. Clem barely got any in the second episode, I'm not spending enough of it with the new characters to really feel any emotion for them, and I'm not sure the episodes are long enough to make any of that possible.

  • I agree with the whole Javier and Kate romance. She's clearly into him but you can choose if Javi's into her. I went with more of a friendly relationship cause it's super weird that she's hitting on her brother-in-law. To me at least.

  • I think Telltale needs to very quickly stop doing these choices involving Clementine. Javier does not know Clementine at all really, but the player has known Clem a long time and won't do anything to hurt her (as evidenced by the lock up and Conrad choices). So Telltale is already putting us through a huge conflict of interest and it isn't a good thing for a choice matters type adventure. Get your shit together, obviously nobody will put Clem in danger even if we are being irrational so just tweak the damn game a bit.

  • I agree, Venge. They should discuss a different way of presenting the choices that involve Clementine, or else we will end up with results like that of the final decision of "What We Deserve." The ideas are good, but they need to execute them differently for them to be controversial.

  • We all swore blood oaths to Clementine at the beginning of Season 1. We had her face branded on our fucking foreheads. For Telltale to make Season 3 not even acknowledge this, after we've spent two seasons with her, is literary lunacy. You. Cannot. Do. This.

Telltale could put in a choice with "If Javier sacrifices Kate to Satan, Clementine might have all her scars healed" and the Devil would get 80% of the Kates.

  • Looking back on it now, sure.

But would you have really been happier if Clementine was never involved in the build-up? And what if Kenny/Jane never showed up atall? I would be more pissed at that, than what we got.

Still don't like what they done with the Kenny/Jane though.

  • I mean I was always worried about season 3 would work, and I was fine with Season 2 being the end of Clem's story.

Clem could have been handled better if there just was no flashbacks maybe. She never mentions what happened to her, but maybe she will talk about Kenny, and Jane, and what Wellington was like, and all we know is something bad happened. Instead of flashback time, watch as we forgot how to write a good send off for a character.
