What are your Pros and Cons of S3 so far?

Hello ya'll. I gotta say, so far S3 is kind of a mixed bag for me. There are so many holes in the writing that it ain't even worth discussing it, but there are some positive things to take out from the first two episodes. I'll elaborate more in the comments.

Pros:

  • Javier as the playable protagonist. He might feel bland to some people, but I personally find him extremely likeable, relatable, and even somewhat realistic.

  • Hubs. You get a lot of time to roam around and chat with other people which is nice. We gotta get to know them if we're to actually give a damn about them.

  • Clementine as a supporting protagonist instead of PC. Don't get me wrong, I'll love to play as her again but it is worth pointing out how well her character has worked so far without us controlling her.

  • Relatable antagonists. This is a big step up from Sata- I mean, Carver in S2. Having an evil twerp like him around is fun sometimes but you need more than that for real good storytelling. I'd love to be able to feel guilty about killing a 'villain' instead of chanting "One more time, Kenny!".

Cons:

  • Flashbacks. Yeah, just horrible. Nothing else to say here.

  • Inconsistent writing. I mean, come on. They all trust each other after half a day, Conrad dies and Tripp mourns for all of 5 seconds and doesn't question Javier over killing someone he's "known for a long time", that goon dies over being punched in the jaw, etc.

  • Same ol', same ol'. We're TWO episodes in and Telltale already had THREE communities fall. The hell? The same tricks are getting kind of repetitive after 3 seasons, TTG.

  • Messed up dialogue choices. Seriously how do we go from 'Good Morning' to 'Die mothefucka'. Telltale needs to fix this ASAP.

  • No rewind. Not a good move in my opinion. Sometimes you just don't want to play the entire episode all over again. Simple.

  • Unlikeable characters. This is completely up to you to decide, but personally, I really could not care less about anyone othet than Tripp, Javer, and Clementine. They need to give us a reason to care for these people. "They're nice" is simply not gonna cut it anymore.

Overall it was a decent experience. I like where the story is going but I'd say its definitely not as good as the previous seasons. 6.5/10, maybe? Sure.

Comments

  • Pros

    • Its pretty cool to see Clementine from an outside perspective, although I would have preferred to play as her, heres hoping for a potential next season

    • Javier is an ok character, if not a little bland

    • Jesus' voice is absolutely divine Garrus Vakarian ftw

    Cons

    • Javiers family is just plain unlikeable in my opinion, and the only one that is likeable is killed in the first episode

    • Playing a new protagonist again, gets kind of annoying, since you spend the first 2-3 episodes getting to know your character, he also has way too much backstory compared to Lee, which means that he has way too many predetermined motives, which in turn means that it gets harder to play him as you want, since you feel he has his own agenda, and isnt just you

    • Too much action, too little world/character building, in season 1 you would often get big breaks from the action where you could walk around and talk to people, get to know them, sometimes find food, show that you care, and solve some puzzles, which gave the game some gameplay, A New Frontier is just shootout after shootout, with a few walkers in between

    • Dialogue choices not being clear always, a good example is in the tunnel after Clem tells you she was new frontier, you can either say something like [I cant trust you], or [Tell me I can trust you], or [Just stop talking] all seem pretty negative, but [Just stop talking] actually means "Well I am sure you had your reasons"

    • Game expects you to care for Javiers family, just because it says so, but then starts killing them off in the first episode, before you even know any of them

  • CONS

    • Episode length
    • Not enough development of secondary characters...because episodes are not long enough
    • insanely misleading dialogue options. I almost expect to see an option to say it is a beautiful day and end up with Javier telling people he used to whack off to Sailor Moon.
    • Flashback models and length unacceptable.

    PROS

    • Team Garcia
    • Clementine is bad ass
    • Bad guys are multifaceted
    • Graphics are amazing.
    • Mystery of what happened to AJ
    • I ship Javier and Kate and I feel no shame
    • Towns add a new breath of air to the game
    • Anticipating Badger being tortured to death.
  • Pros:

    • Javier is a really interesting protagonist and character in general.
    • Clementine is more awesome than in other seasons.

    Cons:

    • Everything else.
  • Con - Clementine is not the protagonist

  • Pros:

    • Javier is a very interesting character
    • Clem is badass like no other
    • Interesting character relationships
    • Exciting an shocking antagonist
    • Graphics are fire
    • PC dialogue wheels are awesome
    • Combat scenes are intense
    • The feeling that S1 gave me of everything being connected is finally back

    Cons:

    • Flashback are wayyyyyy to short. Like whoa. Give us some more Clementine and AJ scenes. IT'S TOO CUTE
    • Kenny/Jane deaths. Come on now.
    • Wellington and alone endings seem to be the only well-written endings. More so the alone ending.
    • Clem's personality changes are nonexistent. However, Telltale has stated that her personality will matter more in episodes 3-5
  • edited January 2017

    PROS:

    • Javier is actually a good protagonist. I like that Telltale gave him some personality with the dialogue options.

    • Even though Clementine is not playable in the present (which is something I wanted) she's a really good NPC. I'm interested to see how she will change towards the end of the season since someone at Telltale said that "our Clementine" will start to show a bit more in the future.

    • The graphics and character movement. Seems a lot better and more fluid. I really like the first hub we get at the junkyard. Felt really natural just walking around with a flashlight.

    • Some of the action moves have been really great as well. Like when a walker grabs Javier and is about to eat his neck and he puts a gun on his mouth and BOOM! And before that as well, when he kills the walkers around Eleanor and Kate's car. Hopefully there are more of those in the next episodes.

    CONS:

    • Javier's family. I don't really feel a strong connection to Kate and Gabe so far. I really liked Mariana and her relationship with Javi, but of course they had to kill off the one character I liked.

    • The hubs. Or lack of them. Since the episodes are so fast paced, the hubs would be a great opportunity to sit back a bit and have a proper conversation with the characters, ask them about things, how they feel about certain situations that happened, etc. The hub at the start in the junkyard was ok, at least you could answer to what the characters were saying, but the one where we had to move the car out of the way was absolutely abysmal. Like the conversation with Conrad "You good?", "No, I'm not good", "I know." The hell, Telltale??

    • Flashbacks. This one is pretty obvious. They feel super rushed.

    • Dialogue options. It's been said already but they need to be clearer in the dialogue choices.

    • Length of episodes. I really hope the first two episodes were exceptions and that the remaining ones will be longer.

    • Pacing of the story. Too much action in too little time. Both episodes happened in less than a day, which is the reason for many of my complaints, like Javier becoming the leader and people trusting him out of nowhere when they just met him hours ago. Not having enough time to properly get to know the side characters and feel attach to them, etc. There has to be some sort of time skip in the next episodes, a few days or something, to at least give the impression that these characters have been together for more than a week by the time the game ends. Otherwise Javier's relationship with the side characters just feel unnatural.

  • I think its kind of sad to not get to play Clem again, but I am hopeful about getting to play her more in future episodes/games, how cool would a game where you protect AJ as Clem be? I feel like with a little writing, you could make it very different from the Lee/Clem story, as AJ is way younger, so you would have to be more protective of him, and things like whether or not you can leave him alone with people, and whether to help people or protect AJ, or trust people or lone wolf it, I think it could be very interesting

Con - Clementine is not the protagonist

  • Right! I forgot episode lenght. If the episodes are gonna be that short the season pass should be 50% off.

CONS * Episode length * Not enough development of secondary characters...because episodes are not long enough * insanely misleading d

  • Pros

    • Javier backstory. He is not just the classic guy that was working and have no family and then the apocalypse just started.
    • Clementine beign a badass.
    • Characters being different one of each other
    • The New Frontier. They could last all the season

    Cons

    • Flashback
    • Clementine is only playable through flashbacks and acts like Jane
    • Lenght
    • Choices from past seasons not mattering
  • Pros: clem's character and how great she is as a none controlled player and as her own self thinking person.
Javier is pretty cool. He won't be as good as lee imo. But he's easily more likeable and better than luke. Even though you couldn't play as luke.
Ava. She's interesting and I liked her interaction with clem. I hope she's not a villain because I would like her to be one of my favorites.
Cons: the choices not mattering at all. Like every other telltale game made so far.
The dialogue not staying with the actual choice of words. Like every other telltale game made so far. Sometimes when you go with the silent option you character will still say something.
The game of thrones mindset the devs seem to be in. That was messed up what happened to that girl.
The way kenny and jane was treated. They both deserved better.
Gabe. I don't like that kid. And him being the only one who was unscathed while kate got hurt and mariana lost her life made me hate him. And now some people are shipping him with clem. Which makes no sense to me whatsoever.
Clem being a playable character only during short flashbacks.

    PROS:

    • Javier is a pretty good protagonist, two episodes in and I already like this guy, I really hope we see him live through this season

    • Clementine is really badass this season, she is more fleshed out, I really want to play as her in the present, which I will get to later

    • The Engine is pretty, the graphics are some of the best from telltale, it looks more realistic and it is just overall sexy as fuck

    Cons:

    • Flashbacks with Kenny or Jane, need I say more?
    • Clementine being playable only in the past, I really want to play as her in the present.
    • The Episodes are short as a motherfucker, this is completely unacceptable, should NOT be a standard.
    • The Lack of Character development is driving me mad, I'm suppose to care about Tripp, Gabe and hell maybe even Conrad. But I don't. I didn't shed a tear when Mari died, or feel anything for that matter.
    • The soundtracks are extremely forgettable, come on telltale you guys are known for having powerful, beautiful soundtracks. Also the Ost "Alive inside" needs to be played!
  • I agree there are things that could have been done better. I am hoping that Episodes 3-5 fix some of these issues and make the characters much more essential.

    PROS:

    • Javier is a good playable character.
    • Clementine.
    • Gabe's dramatic run to Kate when she's shot, it's so fucking funny.
    • Hub areas.
    • Other shit but I'm lazy.

    CONS:

    • Flashbacks.
    • Clementine not being playable in the present.
    • Ep 1/2's length.
    • Choices have a lack of mattering, at least more than usual.
  • Am I the only one that thinks the graphics are shit?

  • Hubs. You get a lot of time to roam around and chat with other people which is nice. We gotta get to know them if we're to actually give a damn about them.

What?...What?! How is this a pro? Season 3 has the worst version of hubs I've ever seen in a telltale game. This should definitely be a con, since the game is LACKING hubs and character interaction

  • I think S2 has the best graphics.

    S2->S3->S1

Am I the only one that thinks the graphics are shit?

  • If you think S2 had more Hubs then we probably have a differemt definition of that word. In TWO episodes we already had more chances to interact with the environment and talk to people than we did in the entire S2. You're welcome to go into detail if you wish, but while S3 is definitely not a river flowing with hubs I do feel its an improvement from the previous installment.

  • PROS

    • Javier, a badass zombie slayer
    • Clementine, stronger and more badass
    • Gorgeous graphics
    • Hub areas
    • Meeting Jesus

    CONS

    • Kenny and Jane flashbacks
    • Clementine not being playable in present
    • Short length

    PROS

    • Season 3 exists... somewhat.
    • ... and Clementine is one piece... sort of.

    CONS

    • Cliches; My Family! I don't even recognize him anymore boohoo, Oh No Zombies, quick stop them!!
    • No character arcs it seems, so they are just surviving is that it? No internal struggle over anything that might be used as character development? No. Great.
    • Shorter episodes, yeah Telltale I bet you'll manage to make a good-paced story with this stupid rule, holy hell.
    • Protagonists, no wait protagonist, is just... boring. Javier's like a plank of wood, I doubt they'll do anything interesting with him.
    • Engine, look how fancy they look too bad they still haven't fixed the models having seizures while doing tasks on screen.
    • Choices mattering... they only visually affect but that doesn't count for anything story-wise.
    • No tough Choices; Oh hey look a clearly right and wrong choice and here I thought it would be hard to make life-threatening choices...
    • Gameplay; QTE's are the same as ever, Hubs are just straight forward now (Go to the far end to trigger something)
    • Graphic wise; Menu ripped off from Batman, spoilers in the episode titles, gg. Still haven't returned that scroll choice making on the PC that was easier and simpler.
  • How is that a pro, when we've already seen her from an outside perspective in season 1?

Pros * Its pretty cool to see Clementine from an outside perspective, although I would have preferred to play as her, heres hoping for

  • Because she is a completely different character than she was 4 years ago. Plus, this time around the whole point of the game is not protecting her, so it gives her personality a better chance to shine on the side.

How is that a pro, when we've already seen her from an outside perspective in season 1?

  • Pros: Javi is awesome.
Though most don't I love his group as well.

Cons: I don't like having Clem around if I am not using her, it made sense in season 1 but after playing as her in season 2 it's completely forced and off.
    Writing is meh so far.
Choices are rather not attractive enough/too one sided and most of the time don't make you ache to decide what to do like past seasons.
    Episodes waaay too short.
Some people look really weird, can't tell what is it exactly but something happened to the faces in the new engine(is it even a new engine? IDK).

  • exactly this

  • PRO:
    - Javier is an interesting main character
    - Clem is still around
    - So far way more likable character than in Season Two (Jesus, Tripp, Eleanor, Kate, Mariana)
    - The lighting is awesome, especially at the junkyard from the beginning
    - Story. The New Frontier seems to have lots of potential for an interesting conflict from within

    CON:
    - The flashbacks. Kenny's death was horrible and an insult to his character. Even Jane didn't deserve such a stupid ending.
    - I prefer the graphics from Season Two
    - No "Previously on The Walking Dead" anymore
    - No credits-songs like in Season Two/Michonne
    - No moving main menu anymore
    - Shorter episodes
    - Less hubs. We can't walk around much so far. Season One and Two had way more and way bigger hubs to explore.

    Pros:

    1. The new engine. The animation improvements have allowed for a game that looks a little more natural.
    2. Telltale have clearly put effort into getting people to look at same if they are a recurring character (Jane aside of course).
    3. Being able to upload your saves to Telltale and then import them to any version of the game is great. Not a feature I use as each device has a different style of play (scumbag Javier on Android) but it's nice to know that the saves are safe in the cloud.

    Meh!

    1. Javier. I just don't feel as if I knw the character at this point. By the end of the first episode of the first season I felt I had a feeling of who Lee was, not so here in season 3. Javier isn't a bad character but he isn't that good either.

    Cons:

    1. The new engine. Whatever new tricks they done, I can't help but feel the game has lost the 'lifted off the page' look that the first two seasons had. While I like the new animation, I'm not sure it is worth the different look.
    2. It's been mentioned before but the lack of a rewind option. I liked to go back and play certain scenes again because I enjoyed them so much. It's a much missed feature for me.
    3. Another repeat but the length of the episodes. I think part of my meh! about Javier is that I simply haven't had the time to get to know him, the game moves about far too quickly, we are just shoved into new situations with the chance to step back and appraise things.

Another side note. Clementine. She's still one of my favourite characters but because I haven't had a chance to know Javier, I'm making choices based on my knowledge of Clem. I kind of feel that Telltale are pushing that angle in many of the choices regarding her.

  • Granted its been quite a while since I've played seasson 2, but I seem to recall far more hubs and interaction than we've seen in season 3. And the hubs we have in season 3 are, for the most part, not player controlled in conversation. Which defeats the purpose. Even if what you said is true, and it's a step up from season 2, it's still not a pro. Absolutely atrocious implimentation to be honest.

I do agree that it's still atrocious when you look at the bigger picture. No argument there.

If you go back to the first episode of Season 2 you will realize there weren't any hubgs AT ALL. I'm dead serious. While it does improve a little bit in latter episode I feel as if it was more random circling around than an actual chance to chat with anybody or do anything meaningful. In S3 we had a couple decent conversation with Mariana, Kate, Gabe, Tripp and Clementine. So yes, though still not great, I do feel it improved just a hair.

  • With all the talk of how A New Frontier is supposed to be the entryway for "new fans" to get into the series, I am not too surprised, what I dont understand is the fact that they thing they even need to change up the formular to attract new players, just because you continue Clems story properly, instead of whatever this is, doesnt mean new fans cant get into the series, Heck when I found this series in December my thought wasnt "wow, there is a new game in the series, I should start with that" it was "Wow, there is already 2 seasons of this game, and a third being made? this is awesome, I am gonna have so much game to play" its not like the old games are outdated or anything, they still look fine due to their cartoony style, so the talk about getting new fans on board that seems to be thrown around, is utter bullshit

God, this has been bugging me so much.

I think that's my biggest issue with the game.

The people of Prescott have no reason to trust Javier. He comes out of nowhere, becomes an accomplise to murder, indirectly destroys their community, determinantly gets one of their members killed, and determinantly kills one of their members himself.

But yeah, no, it makes total sense that they'd suddenly elect him as their leader and put their lives in his hands.

  • pro I like the direction they took clementine with her cussing and being more colder and not as trusting

cons i hate everything else this whole game sucks even though its only 2 episodes in dont care hate it dont care for the other characters

I hate that Clem is not the playable character even though this is season 3 it really has no tie to the 1st two seasons this feels more like another spin off and clem was put in this as a joke

also they gave kenny and Jane short appearances and pointless death

as far as kenny death is concerned they take him out of his season 1 death just to brake him in season 2 and give him this crap of a death they should of just stuck with his season 1 death it made
    more sense

with janes death also pointless choosing suicide just because she found out she was pregnant with lukes baby i mean come on she should of known that was going to happen after being with luke plus if she did not want the child she could of prevented that in the first place if she had protection or took the pill but no she went in knowing this was a possibility to happen and she could of prevented that in the first place but waits this long in and couldnt take she was pregnant so kills herself wow makes a lot of sense not that whole idea was just stupid

telltales made us wait 2 years for season 3 and it doesnt feel like a season 3 it feels like a spin off a season 3 means continuation it should of continued with Clem as the main playable character and it should of tied season 1 and 2 into this but no they went into this like its a whole new story
it feels like a spin off or a cross over story and clem was just put in for kicks just so it would not upset the main fans who have been with her
sense the beginning this was a pointless thing should of left clem out and this should have been like another spin off story than after that give us a
real season 3 that ties with the first 2 seasons and have clem as main playable character also would be nice to have mike and arvo back for clem
to settle her grudge with after mike betrade them and arvo shooting her there are things from season 1 and 2 left unfinished that deserve answers or
closure there is a good few things there the characters that should return mike and arvo so clem could kill them Bonnie should return so there
could be an option for clem to either decide to kill her or forgive her if kill her than have her die there or if clem forgives her to have her rejoin back up
also Lilly should return if she is alive its time to know if she is alive reveal what she has been doing and have her meet back up with clem

Molly needs to either return or mentioned that she is gone I know telltale said they had no plans to bring her back so for her she needs closure that she found a place to live her life till its over or that she got killed by someone

christa needs to return if she lived or if not need to be metioned that she was killed when she tried to run from those guys in season 2

all 400 days characters should return even though i didn't care much for them they should be there for the ones that liked them

the only ones i liked were Bonnie, Shel, and Becca

  • PROS:
    Javier is likeable
    LOTS OF ACTION
    Lots of Hubs
Good storyline-allows room for so many theories.

I also love the relationship choices, Kate and Elenaor. I enjoy this relationship drama situation alongside the main occurence and plot.

    CONS:
    Kenny's death
    Flashback
    Episode Length
    Misleading Choices
"It was a mistake" or "Yes she was justified"-They both looked like the same choice but a different way of backing clementine up. I chose "it was a mistake" then when i realised that it was misleading, i stopped and played it again, as i thought it was a different way to back up clementine, so then i chose the "Yes,she was justified". #TEAMCLEM

    The other misleading choice
Is the famous one, "Tell him off" or "Back down" , I chose "tell him off". Which is not what i was expecting for him to say . i was expecting javier to say : "SHUT UP DAVID!"-Something along those lines, not "Kates gonna leave you for me"
Still... id rather Tell him off than back down, its not something id do in my nature so id rather go the full way than back down and look like a punching bag
