So what is causing zombification anyway?
As is probably most zombie genres it's probably some kind of parasitic pathogen (harmful bacteria/virus) that's causing people to become zombies. It seems it can still inhabit dead individuals in fact it seems to be able to overtake a dead individual but not a live one...
Anyone found clues to what is causing the infection? I'm guessing it's similar to rabies that when it enters the bloodstream it reaches the brain killing off the parts of it that makes a human a human and only keeps the motor function parts working on the brain. It reproduces further by having the infected human bite onto another person and sends more of itself through the saliva into the victim's bloodstream.

Robert Kirkman doesn't want to tell us the cause of the apocalyspe, he doesn't even let AMC and Telltale to make the explanation. It just happened in a random way.
Based on my understanding, the bites you get from zombies just kill you with how much bacteria it contains. Plus, it's the mouth which has ALOT of bacteria, zombie or not -- in real life, if a person bites you (like physically tear your skin) it will always be infected.
The zombiefication is caused by an air-borne virus activating a part of your brain that controls your movement; Kirkman, doesn't want to have a canon explanation to the origins of the virus because he just doesn't want to.
I honestly think he doesn't even know what caused. Or at least he hasn't thought of an explanation yet.
Wrath of an angry god.
I'd give it maybe a decade or two before we even get a proper explanation, or he'll play the douche card and not bother.
Well I don't think it's the actual zombies that carry it. The bite just kills you. You have to full on die before you come back.
Like many said: The bite doesn't turn you into a walker, it just kills you and then an airborne virus makes your body come back to life, only with some primary senses (Hunger, Bad Movement, Hearing), thus walkers are not conscious; I don't think walkers want to infect other people to make more of them, they just want to eat them, and by doing that they also infect them with a bacteria that's strong enough to kill them.
