Are Telltale still capable of creating "good surprises"?

Hey there. I'm new on the forums. Life Is Strange is my religion and I have a dog called Duck.

So, I have this question running in circles on my mind since the release date, so tell me your thoughts.
Can we still believe in Telltale? Are they hiding some good surprise for us or we are just wasting time?

Have a good day y'll.

  • Despite how some people feel about the way S3 has turned out thus far, I'd say yes.

I mean, for every GoT or Minecraft Story Mode, they have a Tales From The Borderlands or a Wolf Among Us. For every Amid The Ruins, they have a House Divided.

They seem to periodically have really great series, and then some not-so-great series. Then sometimes they have really good episodes, then some not-so-good episodes. They fluctuate quite a bit, so I wouldn't rule out Telltale having a possible ace up their sleeve for S3.

  • It saddens me that you used GOT as an example of the poor games. :(

  • For the record, I don't think it's a poor game, but... well, I had to use something as an example. Perhaps I shoulda used Jurassic Park or something instead.

I get why you used it. As much as I loved it, it did get an insane amount of hate.

  • They haven't really taken me by surprise since season 1 honestly.

Their past three games weren't that great in my opinion, with S3 being the worst.
Michonne and S3... I can't figure out which is the worst out of those two.
Batman was great until Episode 3. Episode 4 and 5 weren't as good as the first three.

Due to this, I believe no. There's still a chance they can pull a 180 and make great games again though.

  • Gonna take a lot but so far the surprises in Season 3 have been bland. Mariana's death was first off, a copy and paste of Michonne, and second was just a waste of a character who actually had alot of potential.

David's reveal started to feel obvious once they wouldnt say if he was really dead or not, and how they started off "separated" by taking different cars.

So right now, I dont think Telltale has that many shocks coming up that will be any good. The only thing that I think can truly shock me would be some kinda of Kenny and Jane reveal of them not being dead or something.

I got lucky... real, real lucky.

  • I think difficulties in surprising us come from Javi being a protagonist. I haven't really felt attached to him yet. Attachment grows slowly. At this point I care more about Clem than Javier's family, simply because I've spent frickin years with this little girl.

  • I mean, I can feel the Ep 4 ends with Kenny/Jane kicking down a door as the camera slowly zooms in on their face as they go "Clementine!?"

  • They have the same formula since The Walking Season 1 and sure it is not working as much as it used to. Yeah it worked, took everyone by surprise back then and gave us (really really really) good follows up over time with The Wolf Among Us & Tales from the Borderlands but now there is "competition": Life Is Strange, Oxenfree & Firewatch (the last two being made by former Telltale employees).

I am a LIS fanboy too and that doesn't take away the love I have/had for Telltale (especially for the three games above, but I bought all Telltale stuff except Minecraft SM even if I ended up disappointed again and again everytime) but I thought the success of DONTNOD's game would have put a fire under Telltale's ass on certain aspects but it feels they don't give a damn. I'll see how TWD:ANF rolls but for now I find it lazy on several aspects.

(God, my first comment here and I feel I am way too salty than intended.)

(Hello! Been stalking for a week and now it's time to dive in)

  • Guys, when I mentioned LIS I wasn't trying to compare the games, ok? I love TWD series with all of my heart. I was just trying to show people that I have good taste for games (joking)

  • Till now the surprises from telltale are middelfingery but I can't speak for the whole season...although I don't see they can make a suprise more POWERFULL then kennys return in season 2

  • I've been loving ANF so far, although even I admit the premiere was very rushed and IMO they should have waited until March to release it. Or at least late February.

  • They could bring Lilly or even Christa back.

  • Dontnod deserves all the awards for LIS.

  • I LOVE season 2, so I can't understand this point either.

  • Hey, we have good reasons to be salty and disappointed with certain things about the game; constructive criticism is always good and it's our only way to mobilize TT to hear us out and improve at least some of the problems.

Stalker, huh? I wonder, how do we look from the outside world? Welcome to the forum, hope you'll have fun.

I remember when I used to make several breaks while I was playing season 1, but like some people here said... Just one sit was enough with season 3.

  • Don't mind him. He and I just hate Life is Strange so much and think it's overrated but we'll respect your opinion.

    So?

  • Well, AtR has bluntly shown the reality of choices not making the slightest difference - stealing/not stealing from Arvo or waiting or not after AJ was born don't matter, story is all the same. Also, many people ended up disappointed about how Sarita, Nick and Sarah died despite all the effort that players put in saving them.

Sorry, but how was Amid the Ruins bad?

  • Yes and no. Yes because of series such as batman, borderlands, game of thrones, etc. Telltale can be creative and create surprises in they're content and it is exceptionally good at times. I would say no because in regards to walking dead it appears telltale has severely lost creativity, effort and passion for the series. Honestly I feel telltales walking dead is drained product that they have no clue what to do now.

  • And then they will end their lives in the stupidest and most lame story line filled with disastrous plot holes..this is telltale2k17 we're talking about here comon

  • I believe that Telltale is going to have hits( Wolf Among Us) and misses( Minecraft) like most video game companies. Telltale has surprised me in the past with titles such as Borderlands and Walking Dead, so i do not doubt that they will surprise me again, hopefully with Guardians of the Galaxy.

  • Perhaps I shoulda used Jurassic Park or something instead.

  • Sarita, Sarah, and Nick, the writing for them was god awful.
