See, this is where the disconnect happens for me, I am playing the game as a player, and the game keeps telling me I should care for Kate, but it hasnt given me good reasons to, beyond "she is soooo in love with Javier", she gets into trouble, creates conflict between Javier and David for no reason, sure Javier cares for her, but as a player I dont care for her, so I dont really pick choices favoring her.
Whether or not I make choices as the character or as myself is very dependant on the situation, mostly I play as myself, with a bit of roleplay towards being the character that I am, (for example not being cocky and trying to do things that is risky because I am playing as Clementine), but sometimes it clicks, and the choices makes themselves, where it becomes mostly the characters motivation, and a little bit of me choosing their personality, this happened for me in season 2, especially because I played it the day after I finished season 1, so the would of the ending was still fresh, and I was still devastated by it, which made me so much more immersed in Clementines character, and I felt like I had a good understanding of her character, since I knew what had happened to her.
The same thing I can not say for Javier, he feels so flat to me, I have no clue how I should feel about him, and the game hasnt really given me any reasons to care about his relations or anything, season 1 built up the relationship with Clementine and Kenny, you were strangers at first, Lee and Clem were strangers, but so were the player and Clem, so the player built relationship with Clem together with Lee, which made me attached to Clementine, A New Frontier hasnt done this, it has thrown me in the shoes of Javier, and said "here is some people, theyre your family, now care about them", but thats not how it works, I dont care terribly about them, Gabe has grown on me, but thats about it.
If Clementine and AJ are the daughter and son I want to protect (figuratively speaking), Kate and Gabe are the strangers that someone put at my door and said "This is your family"

Apologies for slightly going off topic!
