So David just abandoned his family?
IMO David had a very lame excuse as to why he never came back for his family. He mentions how he "couldn't get back into Baltimore" but did he even try? He seemed just fine with going back to his army unit.
It just doesn't make sense that he'd give up on his wife and kids by automatically assuming they were walkers/dead with no proof whatsoever.
David gave so much slack to Javi pre-apocalypse for not being there for their family, but that's essentially what he did as well when they needed him most.

I think you're being a bit harsh. David had good reason to think his family was dead. You might remember that last time they saw each other they were both driving in different directions. It might've never crossed David's mind that they went back to the house.
