The Walking Dead: A New Frontier – Above The Law

"Above The Law serves as a strong reminder that, despite juggling multiple franchises, The Walking Dead is where Telltale truly shines. Instead of simply relying on fan favourite Clementine, the studio has taken a risk on a new character that is fast becoming every bit as likeable as she is. Javier has had to do a lot of growing up since the dead started walking. In the process, he has grown on this reviewer considerably. With two episodes to go, A New Frontier is shaping up to be a worthy follow-up to the previous two seasons that acknowledges the series’ past while forging its own unique path. The ending is too abrupt, but hopefully the next episode won’t take another three months to arrive. I’ll never forget about Lee (or Clementine for that matter), but I can’t wait to see how Javier is going to fix this mess."

    Gotta disagree.

Javi is bland, the story is basically lifeless. It moves from action scene to action scene with no sense of urgency. Clem has been shoehorned into this thing, all our previous decisons with her have been rendered useless, she has no variation to her character and treats the player exactly the same no matter how badly the player treats her. The dialogue can be really cheesy and not the good kind of cheese, and when its not cheesey its insipid. The rest of the cast has been poorly developed, except for David, but I don't trust that fucker.

All in all this season has been a total failure.

  • Disagree. They're being waaay too kind and generous.

  • I think EP3 is good.

Sorry to hear you're not enjoying Season 3 Plan_R, I think calling it a total failure is a bit harsh but each to their own. I personally don't find Javi bland at all, I think he's really grown as a protagonist and Lee's shoes were always going to be tough to fill. As I mentioned in the review, I'm also enjoying seeing Clem from a different point of view.

  • Thanks for commenting. How do you rate it compared with the previous two seasons Chris_93?

  • I've never been one for mincing words, but its hard for me to see this as anything but a failure.

Javi plays baseball, is a ladies man, has a beard, and runs from responsibility. The one flawed aspect of his character that is interesting has already been overcome before the game begins. He stuck by his family for four years and some how kept them sane in a world of insanity.

I don't need him to be Lee nor do I need to love him like Clem. But I can't find one compelling aspect of him that makes me want to be in his shoes.

As for seeing Clem from another point of view. I dont see how that's even really possible, at least for me. I only see my Clem, the girl I raised, luckily for me I raised her to be hard as nails. But if someone raised their Clem to be a moral person, they dont even get to see her. Because Telltale took all of our choices and threw them out the window. That is just an epic fail.

  • While I do agree that the first two episodes weren't as good as they could've been, I feel people are using them to judge the whole series.

Above The Law was at the bare minimum a step in the right direction. I thought it was great.

  • Fair enough! The things you described about Javi are actually the exact reasons why I like him as a character. He has grown up because those around him who he cares about needed him to. Meanwhile, David didn't even go back to his own family's house after the outbreak to see if they were still alive - he just assumed they were dead. I like how David basically saw and treated Javi as a screw up, when it was actually Javi who stepped up and protected David's family when he didn't. That's why I find Javi both interesting and likeable.

It isn't that I need him to be Lee - I just see a lot of parallels between the two characters. Lee was a convicted murderer, the last person you'd want looking after a lost little girl in the zombie apocalypse. Yet he did an incredible job. He'd made mistakes, but he was fundamentally a good person... just like Javi. To me, it's almost as if Clementine can sense that about him, which is why she accepts his hug when she would have pushed others away.
