Why Gabentine?

Okay so I know I've made a couple of discussions in the past few days and they all seem to be boiling down to one thing, one major annoyance I have with this season.

Gabe's character.

Even worse than that is the prospect of Gabentine.

E2- Eleanor "Maybe they'll hit it off"- It's literally the first time they've had a proper conversation with each other and all we hear from that conversation is Clem going "Hey" to Gabe, nothing about it even remotely suggest "they'll hit it off" other than the fact their both the same age and of the opposite sex.

E2- Conrad calling Gabe Clementine's boyfriend, which she doesn't even deny this, in fact throughout that whole scene with Clem, Gabe, Conrad and Javi, there's (once again) barely any direct interaction between Gabe and Clem, so where the hell Conrad got the "boyfriend" comment just made me roll my eyes.

E3- "I really want to see Clem again..." yes Gabe we get it already you have a crush on Clementine, after knowing her for less than a day and sharing a few conversations (possibly off-screen) at most. If this is a piss poor way of getting me to care about Gabe (because Clementine will be devastated if he dies, because they are oh- so close) then it didn't work with me.

E4- Playing cards "young love blossoming" apparently, just ugh... enough with the forced crap.

Then there are the other factors we need to take into place here.

Clementine- On her own and distrusting of people since she left the New Frontier, yes she most likely stayed at Prescott before she met up Javi, but she mostly kept to herself. I don't buy the fact that her and Gabe are suddenly close, while she does admit "It is nice to have people around, but it always ends up hurting in the end" I can see how she would (if possible) eventually grow to like Gabe. Just for the place her character is in right now, I find that relationship impossible to work after she's only known him for a few days.

Gabe- Yes Gabe has his family, but let's take into account that he is David's son and Clem despises David for what he did when he kicked her out of the NF for trying to get AJ medicine. You'd think because Gabe loves his daddy so much, he would at least have some sort of believable conflict with Clem over their differences. But we don't get any of that, which makes "Gabentine" relationship seem so shallow and bland. There's no depth to it other than...

"Gabe meets girl his age, has chat, Gabe has crush on girl, everyone else acknowledges it, he can make her happy, they look cute together, Gabentine 4eva!"

I can accept Gabe's crush if someone were to bring up the "his a teenage boy with raging hormones" argument, because that is a possibility, but even then the relationship seems very one-sided and not something you could openly ship as "Gabentine" because it implies Clem feels the same way. Which I can't see her doing, she might see Gabe as a friend at most, but young love? No. Simply because there hasn't been enough time with them together to make this possible.

Removing my objective hatred for Gabe to the side (which may bias my opinion), I think it was bold of Telltale to try and bring in a love interest for Clementine, considering most of us want her as far away from boys as possible. If they brought in a character her age, who actually spent a lot of time with her, where we saw the conversations, conflict and dynamic between them, someone who could make Clem happy again and showcase that she's growing up, then it would have been a great and refreshing plot to follow.

But no, Gabe and Clem's relationship is underdeveloped and barely seen, and (adding my objective hatred for Gabe back into the mix) can't they have had someone just more... likeable be Clem's love interest? Someone who can make her laugh, rather than someone I can see moaning to her, because she didn't risk her life to save his daddy? Why can't Clem (at any point in the game) call out Gabe's treatment of Javi? These two characters from who they align themselves with and their beliefs and differences should be at conflict with each other, the fact they aren't and maintain this whole "young love" angle seems so out of place.

I wanted to make this discussion to show that my reasons for not supporting the ship go beyond simple dislike of Gabe and how "Clem can do so much better" but that development-wise and the way these characters are, this ship can't sail at the moment.

If Gabe gets great redemption by Episode 5, has a few scenes with Clem, then come Season 4 after a time skip and the two are happy in each others company, then fair play. I might still hate Gabe, but I can understand why people would support Gabentine.

But at the moment, just no, so quite simply Telltale, why Gabentine? Why are you forcing this upon us? I know it's not a massive part of the awesome last two episodes you've released but why this ship and how does it annoy me so much?

Anyway, what do you guys think? Still support the ship, or have always been against it?

  • Always been against it. I hope Gabe dies in the finale.

  • I can explain the romance logic like this. Clementine is a teenager and Gabe is a teenager! They obviously have to like each other due to that, right?? Genius!

I personally have always been against it and I think you make some very valid points. It was extraordinarily satisfying to say to Gabe "you little fuckin' asshole." Albeit it was in my side playthrough, I was still happy I got to hear it. I really REALLY hope he dies in episode 5. I can't stand that little shit. He doesn't need to be around Clementine who is one of the few good things left in the apocalypse. I agree on the point how I would like to hear Clem confront Gabe about his attitude towards Javi. I really hope Gabe dies and I really hope Clem doesn't get upset by it. It's just not logical. Like you've said they've only known each other for a few days. I support Javi & Clem's brother/sister relationship because they've saved each other's lives on multiple occasions, but Clem and Gabe haven't been through shit. And with how pissy Gabe is all the time, how the actual fuck would Clem develop a crush back on him. Hopefully, she doesn't feel the same way he does about her and is just trying to be nice. Very solid points, man. I agree with you whole-heartedly. And once again, really hope Gabe dies and Javi and Clem can get more bonding time because I like the brother/sister relationship they give off.

  • I know right!?

Just the second a teenage Clem shows up with her period so she can now become a "mum", she gets a love interest, just blurgh... no!

It reminds me of the comic, the second Carl becomes a teenager, he goes from the child romance he had with Sophia to full blown sleeping with another girl!? I get people grow up fast in the ZA and people crave comfort, but let them be kids or teens for a little while longer and don't force romance on them the second they reach puberty.

  • Thanks! I do love how the Javi and Clem bond has been done, especially since Javier is following in the big boots of Lee, Kenny and Luke and Christa (I mention her because I feel she doesn't get enough credit).

The way I see it, Telltale have successfully made Javier have the big brother bond that Clementine never got much of a chance to develop with Luke and like you said, I enjoy how it's developed. In episode 1 it felt forced, but by this point in the game with everything they've been through and the interactions they've had it's a much better dynamic than Gabe and Clem.

For instance you can see how Clem trusts Javi when she confides in him about being a part of NF, she also tells him about her period problems and what happened with AJ.

I can also see her being the support that Javi needs should he lose everyone he cares about, because she's been through it before. Also she's the only character that doesn't seem to hold a grudge against Javi despite his choices. It feels like she looks up to Javi somewhat and that she can help him as much as he can help her and that's what I like about it.

It doesn't have to be romantic to work, I can see Javier being the big brother figure that can make Clem laugh and happy once again.

Give us more of that brother/sister dynamic for the finale telltale and drop the Gabentine stuff.

i don't understand the hate on Gabe he's just started going through puberty of course he's going be annoying they always are it that age.
and if Clem wants to gave it a go then let her because if Clems your baby then don't you want her to be happy.

  • I'm more hoping he redeems himself, but I can honestly say with what he's done and how his character is at the moment, if he dies in the finale, it won't be a loss that will upset me at all, more like it will be a relief. Sounds horrible to say that about a child character, but he really annoys me to no end.

Also, yes you can say he's going through puberty and when I was his age I was surrounded by annoying prats just like him and I've seen how they've matured later on, so yes there always is the possibility he can become better and maybe it could work in the future, just not now.

As for Clem herself, she is free to make her own choices and if she wants to go with Gabe (for whatever reason) than that's her choice, I just wanted to point out that their relationship has been underdeveloped so far and from a writing standpoint it will just seem odd if they ended up together.

  • Ah, yes. Found it.

1.6 If you want to discuss things like Character Shipping or Character Appreciation, do so in a thread that already focuses on actual story discussion. Do not just create General Chat threads for these individual topics. Threads dedicated solely to statements of the "Yeah, [insert character name/ship here] is pretty cool" nature just do not make great community discussion material.

    I mean, just sayin'.

  • That pertains more towards shipping support threads, like the Rhysha and Rhyiona ones in the TFTBL section. This is more of a critique thread about the ship and does add to overall conversation surrounding the game as it does appear to be an important or relative subplot to ANF. Creating shipping threads for the sake of shipping is bad, but creating threads that discuss and analyze the ship, such as this, are fine.
