My issue with the sudden anger against Tripp... (Mini rant)

Heads up: This thread is more so directed towards those who are angry at Tripp for being angry about them killing Conrad, not those who already disliked him or have some other reason for disliking them.

I've seen a lot of comments giving Tripp shit for being mad at players for killing Conrad and they're really bothering me. Comments like "Tripp's a giant baby" or "Tripp's too emotional." It's like people don't even realize what they did. Tripp's anger is 100% justified. YOU.KILLED.HIS.FRIEND. Not to mention that Javi lets him believe he died for some other reason. You can argue "He was gonna kill Clem & Gabe" Yeah, fair enough but that doesn't mean Tripp's anger isn't justified. Like he said, Conrad isn't around to tell his side of the story, how can Tripp just believe you? Would you?
I mean, come on! Players have been just as angry for less. How many people wanted Duck to die because of the situation with Shawn and the Tractor?

Hypothetical scenario time:

Hypothetically if you really liked Kenny (Really just a placeholder, just think of any of your favourite characters) and considered him to be your friend, imagine you meet this new group of people and at some point you split up for some reason but when you reunite Kenny isn't with them and they just cryptically say "He went crazy... we had to leave him." Then episodes later you find out that they killed Kenny but they justify it by saying "He was gonna kill us!" Would you just believe them? Could you let that go? I've got a strong feeling that most players would've killed them if they had a choice after that revelation.

Anyway, I just wanted to get that off my chest. A bit of a mini-rant, I just find the anger towards Tripp about this absolutely ridiculous. Feel free to share your thoughts. :)

But why did he have to side with Joan who destroyed his community? Hell, Tripp even let his all people to just die and go with people he has onlly known for few days.

  • What are you talking about? He didn't go with them, they took him.

He didn't. Pretty sure Tripp wasn't too happy with Joan when he was brought up onto the stage to be killed in front of everyone. Not wanting to help Javi and siding with Joan are two entirely different things. I assume when he said to Javi that he never wanted to see him again that those words meant "Fuck you, get out of my life, we'll find a way out ourselves." Siding with The New Frontier was never his intent, not even to this determinant grave.

If anything, the person who sided with Joan was actually Eleanor, who told Joan of the plan in the first place. She's the bad guy in this instance. Giving information of a plan to the enemy is siding with them. "GET THE PHUCK OUTTA HERE I DON'T WANNA SEE YEW AGAIN" isn't.

  • The issue isnt so much Tripp, its that Tripp adds to a poorly done scene witha poorly done mechanic. After you kill corad you cant tell tripp about it ever and when the issue comes out everyone doesnt act like a human being. Tripp and Eleanor whove always been ridiculously trusting of other people now allow no explanation and have a hissy fit, javier has no way to explain what actually happened in the situation with several stilted responses.

As such Tripp stopped being a believable character to me and now joins the pile of "Meh...who cares" characters. Hes not quite at the gabe, kate or eleanor level of me hoping they die but I did choose ava over tripp because of his character suddenly dissapearing

  • Being angry about your friend being murdered doesn't qualify as a "hissy fit" And yes you're right, they are very trusting characters and in their minds Javi broke that trust.

  • I think that was more of a comment made in anger. He doesn't actually join Joan, he gets captured along with Ava.

  • Javi "breaks" the trust as the game puts it forward in the most ridiculous way ever, instead of handling the situation like a normal human who just had to shoot someone jav doesnt tell them immediatly that conrad went insane and tried to kill gabe. Instead he hides it with no option to tell them. Then Gabe says that we murdered conrad for no reason and javi has no way to answer the true reason.

The fact it happened so long ago and no one cares about conrad and tripp being friends doesnt help. Hopefully they Tripp does another 180 next episode and forgets like clementine did in episode 3.

I guess if you want the reason I hate Tripp and the rest of the characters is that no matter what you do at any point the character will just flip on you for no reason, all the characters this season do it. Why should I care?

  • I'm pretty sure you can tell Tripp that Conrad would've killed Clem and Gabe and then Clementine says he lost it when he found about Clementine being with the New Frontier.

It's worth mentioning that if you don't kill Conrad Tripp doesn't get mad.

I suppose I can't change minds. Be angry at Gabe, be angry at Tripp, whatever you want, but at the end of the day you're the one who pulled the trigger.

  • Tripp was being facetious lol

  • I dont regret what I did there, I mean seriously if the argument now is betraying one of your friends to be sold to an enemy group that killed your niece at the request of a group member holding your nephew at gunpoint is the right call then fine.

I mean your acting like I just when welp lets shoot this reasonable guy for no reason. In fact you know what that must be what happened because thats what all the character act like in game. I obviously didnt save Gabe from a crazy person I just murdered a guy according to him after he flipped out and told everyone that for literally no reason

Once again I still love the fact conrad changes from unstable and violent revenge seeking to calm and just wanting to leave in the space of a day. I mean Joan more or less literally ordered the death of his wife and he doesnt care. Add that to tripp and elanor who keep berating me for messing up there chances to live in richond when the new frontier when they destroyed there community.

Hence the utter shit from Telltale these days. They have a scene where a character can be nice or mad at you followed by a "____will remember that" and yet he or she "DON'T" as the following episode it is all forgotten about. Like you said about Clementine, she seemed (and understandably) really pissed off if you side with Conrad end of ep2 and yet the following episode she doesn't even call Javier out on it, no personality change or different treatment. Telltale could have had another character help Javier with the walkers after he dropped his baseball bat but no, Clem still helps him like he's her best friend. What ever happened to the days Lilly and Kenny would like or hate you? Or the way Vernon treats you depending on your choice? This is why I won't play another Telltale game again once this season is over. They have lost their way so much since Season 1. They are capable of replicating how they made Season 1 such as long episodes, more gameplay/hubs, puzzles/optional side quests and character interaction etc, it's just that they don't seem to want to/or being lazy or they have just had a men in black mind wipe moment and lost all ability they once had to make a thrilling game.

    Rant over.

  • Tripp was just expressing how mad he was at javi. This wasn't at all in any sense literal.

  • I love how Vernon is a consistent mention in your rants on this topic when he was only in one episode. That's how bad it's gotten, people.

  • Haha i use Vernon in my discussion because like with Kenny and Lilly, he and Brie are the only other 2 characters in the game who can determinantely treat you differently. I just can't understand why Telltale won't do this again? It made Season 1 so interesting to see the contrast of these characters personalities

  • Another reason i mention Vernon a lot is because for me it's annoying that his status is still uncertain to this day. Joyce saying the group "Lost Brie...and Vernon with that damn boat"

That to me isn't clear if he is alive or dead.

I was always under the assumption that the plan went to shit and he was simply ditched by the others for what going along with the plan involved doing. But you're right.

Yeah, that has become a significant recurring issue, with Rebecca, Alvin, Jane, Norma, Clementine, and Tripp being the main offenders off the top of my head.

  • Tripp getting angry at us would've been perfectly fine had we been given a choice to tell him the truth earlier. The problem is Telltale is trying to make us feel guilty for a lie they gave us no control over. Had we been able to tell the truth and chose not to it would've given Tripp's anger some actual weight to it.

  • The frustrating part is that nearly everyone who shot Conrad chose to say "Conrad lost it", showing that they wanted to come clean to Tripp immediately. But our words got warped around and now we are dirty fucking liars.

  • His anger was justified but the execution of it all was horrible. From the build up to the revelation to the aftermath.

  • Yeah, that has become a significant recurring issue, with Rebecca, Alvin, Jane, Norma, Clementine, and Tripp being the main offenders off the top of my head.

Just think of how good it would have been if in Season 2, Rebecca keeps her horrible attitude towards Clem throughout the game similar to say Larry's personality, however, through choices we can make Rebecca do a u-turn and begin to really like Clem instead of just magically being nice to her in the following episode or have her continue to be bitter. Sarah is another. If you refuse to be friends with her, she'll be really cold with Clem throughout the game. Nick could hold a grudge against you for the Nick/Pete choice. Luke's personality would change based on your relationship with Kenny (similar to the Kenny/Lilly relationship).

They could have done so much in Season 2 like that and same for Season 3. Just such a waste
